Can you help me calculate import VRT?
Hello,
I'm about to register an imported car from NI. The model is not widely available in the Republic and therefore not listed on the Revenue VRT calculator so I have to complete a VRT estimate form myself, which involves calculating the 'ratio of UK to RoI price'. What exactly does this mean?
Thanks in advance.

Hi John,
Basically it's what you do when you can't find an already-calculated Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) for your car. You look instead at similar models in the UK market, calculate an average and then calculate the difference between that and the average price for similar models in Ireland. Basically, it's a quasi-official guesstimate and Revenue has some helpful tips and hints here: http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/faqs-vrt.html
Which higher up car to go for like my Corolla?
I own a 2007 Toyota Corolla Terra and I am thinking of changing. I would like a car that is higher off the ground, like the new Hyundai Tucson, but not that big. What other cars similar in size to the Corolla would you suggest?

Hi Jim,
There are a number of other potential options you could look at, but seeing as you've been a Corolla driver, I'm guessing you want something that's going to match the Toyota for reliability. So, in that case, have a look at the Honda HR-V or Skoda Yeti. Both are taller than a normal hatch but not so big as a Tucson and both are really well built and reliable.

Which large MPV to go for?
Hi, I'm looking for a seven-seater with a large boot. We have been looking at the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Life, but don't know too much about them except they seem to fit our needs and price range (3/4 years old). Am I missing any other people carriers because I've been focusing on boot space?

Expert answer
Hi Libby,
The Caddy Life is actually a really good choice - hugely versatile and not at all bad to drive, for a car based on a van. It's also worth looking at the Citroen Berlingo (similar, but doesn't have the long wheelbase Maxi Life option) or the Renault Kangoo. If you fancy something a bit more comfy and car-like, have a look at a Ford S-Max or the SEAT Alhambra.
I'd like a Jetta-like saloon, but smaller...
Hi,
I am sick of hatchbacks. I yearn for a four-door saloon. Love the Jetta interior layout but would like a smaller saloon with same layout. Similiar to older Golf model. Can you suggest a smaller saloon with Jetta interior layout?

Hi F D,
Sadly, not. There used to be a Volkswagen saloon smaller than the Jetta but that was the Polo saloon and it hasn't been in production for years. So why not just go for a Jetta? Really nice car, actually. Kind of underrated and not all that big. It's is just a Golf with a boot, after all...
What will I replace my Kia Soul with?
I had a 1998 Honda CRV auto. I changed it in 2014 as it was costing so much to run. To this day I still pine for my Honda. Its reliability was incredible. I got a Kia Soul diesel 1.6 but find it noisy and bumpy on country roads. Also, the boot is too small for country living. Everything I look at is too big and bulky. I want something in a similar size to my Honda, diesel, 1.6 engine, automatic with low tax. I need height as I have bad back issues.
Many thanks. Margaret

Hi Margaret,
I know what you mean. The Honda bug is a hard one to shift once it's bitten you. The good news is that Honda has a new car on the market, the HR-V, which is more compact than a CR-V, but still pretty spacious. It's high-riding, so good for your back, and can be had with Honda's terrific 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine. Looks nice too. Prices start from €23,995 or on a PCP deal from €255 a month and I'd say it's well worth checking out.
Toyota Corolla or Skoda Octavia?
Thinking about buying a 2008 Toyota Corolla or Skoda Octavia, similar mileage, 1.4 petrol. Thoughts?

Hi Brendan,
Both decent cars. Go with the Corolla if reliability is your overriding priority (although the Skoda's hardly fragile or anything) and go with the Skoda if space and a big boot are your priorities.
Does this 141 Audi A3 Saloon sound ok?
I am seeing a 141 (2014 Apr) Audi A3 Saloon 2.0 TDI 150hp, SE with Milano leather, a good spec car overall and has done only 10,000km so far. The price being quoted is €25,000. I am actually worried because the price quoted is low for its value. What could the seller be hiding? Any suggestions to help not to get cheated? Seller is a dealer (not SIMI) and has no problems me getting a Audi showroom health check.

Hi Gokul,
It's not massively cheap, maybe a couple of grand below the average asking price, but with just 10,000km on it, it does look a touch suspicious. Independent dealers can be, shall we say, very variable in their quality of sales and service, but maybe ask around and see if others in the area have had any experience.
Nissan Pulsar or Toyota Corolla?
How would you rate the Nissan Pulsar against the Toyota Corolla and what are their prices new?
Joe Naughton (Limerick)Jan 2016 Filed under: choosing new car
Expert answer
Hi Joe,
They're both pretty similar to be honest, although at the moment the Corolla is only available as a four-door saloon and the Pulsar as a five-door hatch.
Both are solid, reliable, unremarkable workhorses. If you're looking for excitement, sexy styling or dynamism, you've come to the wrong place - but both major on space (the Pulsar in particular has massive space in the back seats), comfort and simplicity.
The Corolla's diesel engine lags a bit behind the Nissan's in terms of performance, but other than that, they're pretty closely matched and seeing as both will probably be endlessly reliable you can safely choose according to your taste.
New, Corolla prices start at €20,995 and Pulsar prices start at €19,995.

Which new Peugeot 5008 diesel to go for?
Hi,
I was hoping to buy either a 2016 Peugeot 5008 1.6 BlueHDi 120 or a 2.0 BlueHDi 150; both are very similar: which one would you recommend in terms of performance, economy and reliability?
Thanks, Gary
Garret Hearns (Laois)Nov 2015 Filed under: choosing new car
Expert answer
Hi Gary,
Go for the 1.6. It has plenty of poke (270Nm of torque) and can be coaxed up to near enough 60mpg if you're careful. There are some reliability issues (water pump and turbo among them), but if it comes with a full service history and you keep it looked after (and crucially keep giving it high quality oil at service time) then it should be fine.
