Can I reclaim UK VAT on exporting a new car?
Hi,
I'm thinking of importing a new car from the UK. I am aware that I will need to pay VRT and VAT in Ireland. My question is whether I will be able to reclaim the UK VAT if I export the car immediately on purchase.

Hi Jim,
You don’t reclaim the UK VAT if you’re exporting a brand new car to Ireland, you simply don’t pay it in the first place. According to HMRC, you won’t be liable for UK VAT on your purchase if you take it out of the UK within two months of buying and don’t drive the vehicle in the UK unless you register and tax it. You’ll also have to fill out a VAT 411 form.
Will Ireland move to paperless motor tax?

Are you aware of any plans for Ireland to move to a paperless tax, NCT and insurance system like they use in the UK? To see all that paper hanging in the windscreens of modern cars is very last century and is simply clutter that does nothing to complement the great design of many modern cars.

Hi Martin,
There are certainly no concrete plans that we’ve heard of. There was some discussion of the subject, back in 2014 when the UK did away with paper tax discs, that Ireland might move to a similar system, and the abolition of being able to carry over unused vehicle tax from one owner to another is kind of the first step on that road. Dublin City Council this year suggested that we should start moving towards paperless tax but plans haven’t gone any farther than that for now.
Worth paying VRT to import a Ford Focus?
Is worth paying €17,000 for a UK import of a 2014 Ford Focus Zetec 1.0 turbo 125hp? Any problem to trade in in the future?

Hi Shiu,
It’s an excellent car, but you’ll need to modify your own driving style a little to get the best economy out of the little 1.0-litre turbo engine. It is a terrific engine, though. You’re most likely looking at paying around €2,900 in Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) to import it.
There are a huge number of imports from the UK and we don't believe it will adversely affect the trade-in price in a few years time.

How can I import a commercial SUV?
Hi guys,
Really hoping that you can help me with this one. I'm hoping to import an SUV (either Volkswagen Touareg or Mercedes-Benz ML 280) from the UK and register it as a commercial vehicle. The most ideal situation would be to import it, get the crewcab conversion and register it as a five-seater crewcab (I'm one of the few who would very genuinely need both five seats for crew and the ability to drop them and use as a commercial through my job in events), but will settle for two seats and commercial tax.
There do not seem to be any of those SUVs in the UK that are non-passenger versions (I presume due to the UK not having a commercial SUV as such) so I'm just wondering what steps I will need to take to get the lower tax rate and import as commercial.
Please let me know, as your help will be much appreciated.

Hi Brian,
There is a way of doing this, but it requires some very careful timing. Once you import a vehicle, you have seven days from its arrival on these shores to notify Revenue that it’s in the country and also to book the NCT inspection to get the final bill for Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT).
So that gives you a little wiggle room. Ideally, you would be best advised to find a company in the UK who can carry out the conversion and re-register the vehicle with the DVLA in Swansea, before importing it. If that’s not possible, then what you need to do is to make sure you have an Irish conversion company set up and ready to go who can carry out the conversion when the car arrives here, before it goes for its inspection. It’s ever so slightly legally dubious (letter of the law rather than spirit), but if you can keep the timings sharp, it could work.

It depends which version you mean, but assuming it’s a 60hp 1.25-litre model then it has CO2 emissions of 120g/km so will cost €200 a year to tax.

How much would a 2007 Ford Mondeo be worth? It has 84,000 miles on the clock, an NCT until April 2017, heated windows, parking sensors, new flywheel fitted. I'm wanting to update a few years for tax reasons but went to few dealers and it was an insult for what they were offering. Really I think it's because I'm a woman on my own going to a garage, but one dealer told me to sell it private so I'm looking for some advice on the price.

Prices for a 2007 Mondeo seem to hover at around the €5,000 mark, so as a trade-in you’re only likely to get offered €3,500 or so – dealers have to allow for some profit margin and expense when it comes to valuing cars.
If you’re going to sell privately, I'd pitch the price at around the €4,500 mark and see how you go.

It depends which model you mean. An automatic 2.0-litre VVT-i petrol RAV4 from 2008 has CO2 emissions of 212g/km, so will cost €1,200 a year. The manual version has CO2 emissions of 202g/km so costs the same. It gets a bit better with the diesels. The 180hp 2.2 diesel has emissions of 185g/km so costs €750 a year while the 150hp version has emissions of 173g/km so costs the same €750.

Hi Katie,
Scrappage is a bit tricky in this instance – all of the current ‘scrappage’ schemes being offered by car makers and dealers aren’t actually scrappage at all, but are just trade-in boosters. Most, if not all, of them usually require the car being traded in to be taxed and insured and drive onto the forecourt under its own power. If you could patch it up and get it running long enough to do that, you could get as much as €4,500 off the price of a new car, depending on which model and which brand you went for.

I'm in the market for a new executive commercial vehicle - but it needs to have five seats. Loophole a go go... The obvious choice is the Land Rover Discovery, but I understand they are being phased out and so my leasing company won't offer it as an option. Things like an L200 / Ranger / Hilux / Navara are a little TOO commercial for my tastes...
The Pajero Executive is nice, but the equipment, engine and layout all seem older than I am. The Touareg is a nice bus, but seems expensive compared to the rest and I've heard so-so reports in terms of value for money. Any ideas what else I should look for? Do Volvo / BMW / Audi do a five-seater that classes as commercial?

Hi Al,
BMW, Audi and Mercedes don't do an in-house commercial option, but you can get an aftermarket conversion, of course.
One option worth looking at is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. A really nice car, good to drive and Agnelli Motors on the Naas Road in Dublin do a five-seat commercial conversion with prices starting around the €45k mark.
There's also the Toyota Land Cruiser 'Business' model, but it's a bit more expensive, at €57k. Utterly indestructible though and hugely comfortable.
Just make sure you've properly taxed it if you're planning on using it for domestic or family motoring as the fines for using a commercially taxed vehicle for that are pretty stiff.
