Which seven-seat SUV would you buy?

Which seven-seat SUV that has low road tax would you buy? I’m thinking of buying new.

Expert answer

Hi Brian,

I’d be very tempted by the new Peugeot 5008, especially the one with the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol 130hp engine. It’s really roomy, comes with seven seats as standard, is good to drive and even with the petrol engine isn’t too harsh on tax. The Skoda Kodiaq is another very, very good seven-seat SUV, but you do have to pay extra for the extra seats. Kia’s Sorento is a big favourite of ours too, but it’s bigger and pricier and has higher tax than the Peugeot or Skoda. Here are our reviews to help you decide:

Assuming it’s the five-speed manual model with four-wheel drive then it has CO2 emissions of 165g/km, and that means Band D tax at €570 a year.

What new car deals are coming for 181?

Any ideas of what kind of car deals will be coming for the 181 buying season? Expecting good deals due to poor sales or are we in for high PCP rates all around?

John O'Connor (Buncrana Co Donegal)

Expert answer

Hi John,

Short answer? We don’t know. A huge amount will depend on what the Government does in the Budget this year and if any changes are made to the tax system. Or if a general diesel scrappage scheme is introduced. It’s unlikely that PCP rates will go up much, unless the European Central Bank starts to raise its base rates, but on the basis of what we’ve seen this year, I’d imagine there will be plenty of sharp deals around. That said, if it’s a deal you want, buy just before Christmas, when sales have dropped to dead slow. You’ll get more for your money then.

Can you help me estimate a Niro's OMSP?

Determining the OMSP of a car that is not available within Ireland: yes, I have read through all of the Revenue documentation, and the only remaining variable in determining the VRT amount due is in determining the OMSP of the UK car. There are two Irish versions of this car, but there are FOUR in the UK. Only one of the four have previously been VRT'd, (I know this because it shows on the VRT calculator).

The car I wish to purchase is the top-spec, which includes front parking sensors, sunroof and high-spec sound system. What value could the Rosslare Office assign to these extras? What's worse, I rang Rosslare and they said that I have to purchase the car then register it, and only then can they tell me the OMSP of the car. This is too much of a risk. Please help if you can.

This car is a hybrid, hence the reason why only one of the four types have previously been imported.

Michael, Donegal.

Expert answer

Hi Michael,

The problem is that it’s not an open and transparent system. Because there is no official guide for second hand prices in the Ireland (such as the UK’s Glass’s Guide) it means that Revenue can set a value that they see fit, both for vehicles and for extras. Sadly, and I’m sorry that this isn’t much use to you, any value we might ascribe to such extras is a pure guess, and could be completely at variance with what Revenue eventually says. It’s an unpleasant quirk of an outdated vehicle taxation system.

What are the Irish motor tax bands?

What are the Irish motor tax bands for new cars in Ireland?

Johnson Thoppilan (Angamaly)

Aug 2017 Filed under: taxation

Expert answer

Hi Johnson,

The current motor tax bands run from A to G, based on the CO2 emissions of the vehicle, with bands A and B — the ones into which the majority of cars on sale fit — split into sub-bands.

A starts with an electric-only band of A0 (which costs €120 a year) and then goes to A1 (up to 80g/km at €170 a year), A2 (80-100g/km, €180), A3 (100 - 110g/km, €190) and A4 (110-120g/km, €200).

Band B is spilt into B1 (120-130g/km, €270) and B2 (130-140g/km, €280).

After that it’s Band C (140-155g/km, €390), Band D (155-170g/km, €570), Band E (170-190g/km, €750), Band F (190-225g/km, €1,200) and Band G (over 225g/km, €2,350).

How much to tax an imported MINI?

If I bring a 2004 MINI home, how much will road tax be for its 1.6-litre petrol engine?

John O Sullivan (Tralee)

Aug 2017 Filed under: taxation

Expert answer

Hi John,

A pre-2008 car being imported means that it’s on the new CO2-based system. A 2004 MINI Cooper 1.6 has CO2 emissions of 163g/km so you’ll be paying €570 a year to tax it.

Which 2008-2009 estate to buy?

What is the estate car to buy around 2008-2009 low tax brands? I was leaning towards Volvo.

Thanks

Hi Mike,

Back as far as 2008 and 2009 sadly you're missing out on the Volvo V60, which is a cracking car and very affordable to run. You could get a bigger V70 with the 1.6-litre diesel engine, but it's a bit more expensive. The smaller V50 estate might be too small for you.

Would you consider a Skoda instead? An Octavia Combi is hugely spacious, reliable, cheap to buy and cheap to run.

Will our broken Nissan be ok for scrappage?

Hi... our automatic gearbox has gone on our 2013 Nissan Note. Instead of spending money getting it fixed will dealers accept it for a scrappage deal against a new car?

Dwayne Reck (Wexford)

Jun 2017 Filed under: scrappage

Expert answer

Hi Dwayne,

It will depend on the dealer and the small print in their 'scrappage' deal. The current deals actually aren't scrappage at all, as in the car being traded in isn't usually actually scrapped, so they tend to be a touch more fussy about condition. Usually, the car has to be taxed, insured and driven onto the forecourt under its own power, but have a chat with the dealer in question first and see what they can do for you.
