Changing my taxi to Renault Fluence - ok?
Hi,
I am changing my taxi currently a Toyota Avensis 1.6 petrol, for a 2010 Renault Fluence 1.5 diesel. Are there any problems I should know about with the Renault?
Thanks

Hi Des,
You’ll need to check for a blown turbo (lots of smoke, no power) and also check that the diesel particulate filter hasn’t become clogged up if the mileage is low. The electric windows and ventilation fan are fragile, and make sure that the clutch is engaging cleanly as for some reason replacing the clutch is an expensive job on a Fluence.
Qashqai vs. Corolla reliability comparison?
Is the 2007 Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi comparable in reliability to the 2007 Toyota Corolla 1.4 D-4D? I most likely will be buying one or the other in the near future (but also considering the Toyota Avensis 2.0 D-4D) and my heart is saying Qashqai, but my head is saying Corolla (I do 20,000 miles per year).
I would appreciate an independent viewpoint
Thanks - Cathal

Hi Cathal,
The Qashqai would be a reliable car in general terms, although they do tend to suffer from sagging suspension and occasional turbocharger failure on the diesel model. The engine management system can also go awry. The Corolla is perhaps not as perfectly reliable as is sometimes painted, but overall I’d expect it to be a little more reliable than the Nissan.
How would you rate the 2008 Toyota Avensis?
Has the 2008 Avensis 2.0 D-4D diesel a timing chain or timing belt and how would you rate its reliability overall? As reliable as the Toyota Corolla?

Hi Cathal,
That model has a timing belt, and it has to be changed every 100,000km or seven years. It’s a hugely reliable car though, easily the equal of its little brother, the Corolla.
Will I replace my cee'd with a new Kia Rio?
I have a 2007 Kia cee'd petrol with 180,000km on the clock. Trying to work out the best time to replace it. Thinking of a diesel as I do over 15,000km per year. Thinking of the Rio.
Your advice much appreciated.

Hi Laurie,
Well, the cee’d is a good, solid car so if you want to keep it going it will probably do for a while yet. At ten years old, there’s not going to be much value left in it either way, so a few extra months with it won’t dent your trade in. Which is good news, as there’s an all-new Kia Rio launching very soon, which will be on sale in Ireland before the summer. It’s roomier and much more sophisticated than the current model, and with your mileage forget about diesel – go for the brilliant little 1.0-litre turbo petrol.
Nissan Qashqai or Toyota Corolla?
Hi, would you consider a 2007 Nissan Qashqai 1.5 diesel to be as reliable as a 2007 Toyota Corolla 1.4 diesel of similar mileage and condition? I will be buying one or the other in the next week or so and my heart is saying Qashqai, but my head is saying Corolla - can you provide an independent insight please? I do 20,000 miles per year.
Many thanks

Hi Cathal,
The Qashqai is a reliable car, as are pretty much all Nissans, but the Corolla will still have the reliability edge. If reliability is ultimately your priority, then go for the Corolla. That said, if you really want the Qashqai, as long as it comes with a full service history and you keep it regularly serviced, we wouldn’t expect to see any major issues occur.
What to look out for on diesel Astra Estate?
Opel Astra Estate 1.7 or 1.3? With 90,000 plus mile. What to look out for? I will change the turbo just in case with an Opel part as I do all my own servicing so labour cost not a problem.

Hi Gerry,
Of the two, I’d prefer the 1.3 diesel. Neither is an especially refined engine by modern standards, but the 1.7 is a terrible old thing – incredibly noisy, rattly and prone to stalling when driving in stop-start traffic. The 1.3, if you get it with the 90hp output, has decent performance, is very economical and doesn’t seem to give too much bother. Great that you’re doing your own servicing, but beware of what effect that may have on the resale value as most buyers prefer to see a healthy book of dealer service stamps.
Is the Renault Megane diesel reliable?
Is a 151 Renault Megane 1.5 diesel a reliable car?
Tom Nelson (Maynooth)Dec 2016 Filed under: reliability
Expert answer
Hi Tom,
Yes, it is. Renault has really gotten on top of the quality issues that plagued the brand in the early 2000s and the fact that the engine (and pretty much all the bits you can’t see) are shared with Nissan should tell you a lot about their potential reliability.
We have heard of that 1.5 engine blowing turbos, but it seems to be a relatively rare issue. Nonetheless, as it ages you should definitely keep an eye on the various electrical and electronic systems as they can throw up niggling problems. That said, if you stick to the service schedule, it should be fine.
Is the Saab 9-5 1.9 diesel a good car?
I have a Saab 9-5 1.9 Tid diesel saloon in relatively good condition and 155,000km on the clock. Is it rated as a good car?
James Mc Greal (Drogheda)Dec 2016 Filed under: reliability
Expert answer
Hi James,
It depends; do you mean the first-generation 9-5, which was in production from 1996 to 2009 or do you mean the short-lived last-of-the-line 9-5, which only survived in production for two years before Saab went bust?
If it’s the first generation car then the rating is a little mixed. It was always well thought of in terms of overall quality, comfort and driving dynamics, but there were a number of annoying, niggling reliability issues with that model, although at least with the 1.9-litre diesel engine you’re avoiding the troublesome 2.2-litre model.
If it’s the later, second-generation version of the 9-5 then it is indeed very well thought of, and generally considered one of Saab’s best cars. It’s just a shame that it was also its last.

Hi Bob,
Short version? The IS 300h is good looking, ultra reliable and comes with very low tax. Shortcomings are the strange CVT gearbox and less than sparkling acceleration. A viable diesel alternative though.

When to change my Skoda Rapid's timing belt?
Hi, I have a Skoda Rapid diesel 1.6 TDI: when should change this car's timing belt and water pump? Current mileage is 70000 on the clock.
Nasser Sharif (Glasgow )Dec 2016 Filed under: servicing
Expert answer
Hi Nasser,
The timing belt should be changed every 240,000km or every four years, whichever is sooner.
