Can I import my company's Range Rover VRT free?

Hi

I'm permanently based in Cork but have a company in the UK for which I travel back and forth regularly for work. I have a vehicle over there, a 2017 Range Rover. Can I bring this back to Ireland after owning it for longer than six months in the UK and avoid VRT etc?

Hi Brendan,

It might be possible to bring the vehicle in as a Transfer of Residence import as, though it's not quite what Revenue had in mind when it introduced the scheme, you are likely to have the paperwork to support it. Take a look yourself at the official Transfer of Residence page for more details so you can make a decision.

I want import a 2011 Volvo XC90 to Ireland...

I want to import my brother's 2011 Volvo XC90 from UK to Ireland. What would be the cost involved? Also, I have an Indian licence. So how much will the insurance cost?

Hi Nestor,

We'd need a lot more information to be able to give you any estimates of the costs involved, but generally speaking, if the car is coming from England, Scotland or Wales, you will be liable for VAT and import duty on top of VRT and the NOx levy. Cars coming from Northern Ireland usually (though not always) only attract VRT and the NOx levy.

To estimate the VRT you will need the official CO2 rating and a guess at the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) according to Revenue. Give us the car's engine details and we should be able to make a good guess at all that.

I highly recommend you read our guides on the subject first:

Guide to Importing Cars from the UK
Guide to Importing a Car from Northern Ireland

And it isn't really possible for us to estimate your insurance cost as there are so many factors involved. Best bet is to ring around with a registration number of a very similar existing car in Ireland to get a feel for the price.

One final thing to be aware of: your Indian licence is only valid in Ireland for 12 months after you arrive in the country, regardless of whether you have access to a car.

When will Jaecoo arrive in Ireland?

When is the Jaecoo 7 on sale in Ireland and do you know who will be the distributor?

I'm afraid we have no information at all on the arrival of Jaecoo in Ireland nor on the distributor.

How much to import a 2014 Jaguar F-Type?

How much to import a 2014 Jaguar F-Type 3.0 AWD? The VRT calculator doesn't show anything for an F-Type.

Expert answer

Hi Steven,

We can help you estimate it, but please do note that it is only an estimate and you're kind of at the mercy of Revenue.

First up, we can be certain that car will be in the top band for VRT due to its CO2 emissions, so that means VRT at 41 per cent.

That's 41 per cent of the so-called Open Market Selling Price (OMSP), which is the value Revenue reckons the car is worth following registration in Ireland.

It's a tricky thing to guess for a rare car such the F-Type, but for the purposes of our calculations let's say it's €45,000. That would mean VRT of €18,450.

The NOx levy is separate to that, but small in comparison.

And if you're bringing the car from England, Scotland or Wales them you'll also be hit with VAT at 23 per cent and import duty at 10 per cent (though these are calculated from the 'customs value' of the car, not the OMSP).

Most cars coming from Northern Ireland shouldn't be liable for VAT or import duty, within certain restrictions.

Make sure you do your homework on all this before committing to bringing the car in.

Can I import a car from the North VAT-free if owned by a company?

Looking to buy a car from the Northern Ireland. Was first registered in the North to a company and hasn't changed hands since. Is the car due VAT if brought into the Ireland? Revenue mentions if it's owned by a private owner it'll be exempt from VAT. Is a company counted as private ownership?

Homg (Dublin)

Expert answer

Hi Homg,

Yes, ownership by a company counts as private ownership, but only if the vehicle was actually registered and used in the North after importation for, as Revenue puts it “a reasonable amount of time”. If that's the case then no VAT or import duty should be payable on importing it south of the border.

If the company in question is a car dealer, however, and they have not brought the car into the North according to the Windsor Framework, then VAT and import duty may indeed be payable.

Which new Audi A6 e-tron to buy?

I was living in the North when I bought my last new Audi A7. I saved a considerable sum by shopping around dealers. In RoI, do all Audi dealers stick to the website price or is it worth shopping around?

Audi Ireland only seems to offer a three-year general warranty. Is it possible to buy an extended warranty?

Yours was the best review I have read about the A6 Sportback e-tron. I live on top of a hill two miles from a main road and they do not grit here. I prefer quattro but also want max range - any advice as to how to choose between the quattro and the advance?

Sorry for the three questions!

Expert answer

Hi Michael,

New Audi prices may be the same across all its dealers, but each and every one of them will do deals differently, especially when there's a trade-in involved. No harm shopping around.

We know that Audi has an extended warranty, and it's briefly mentioned on Audi Ireland's website, but there's no further information about its cost that we can see. We've sent a message to our contact there to get an answer on that one for you. We'd certainly advocate for extended warranties on high-end cars.

Finally, only you can decide on which of the A6 Sportback e-trons you like, but do you need to absolutely max out the range you can get from the car? Enough to live without the reassurance of quattro four-wheel drive? If so, then perhaps invest in a set of winter tyres and wheels to use when you need them.

I'd just go for the quattro and accept it won't be quite as efficient.

How much to VRT a Mitsubishi L200?

Hi Ryan,

As a commercial vehicle, the VRT on the L200 pickup should be 13.3 per cent of the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP), which is the price Revenue in Ireland believes the vehicle to be worth on the Irish market.

How to get temporary insurance on my sister's car in Ireland?

My sister lived in Co Donegal for 40 years. She had a Skoda Citigo (2012 reg). I brought her back to the UK three years ago to a care home where she now lives. I have tried to insure the car in my name but cannot do so because I am not permanently resident in Ireland. Is there any way I can get it insured for me to drive when I visit every few months?

Expert answer

Hi Michael,

Have you tried talking to your own insurer in the UK to get temporary cover while over here? Or to change your cover so that it allows you to drive any car, even in Ireland?

If the Citigo is insured by someone else already in Ireland, then it should be possible to add you as a named driver or change the policy to allow all drivers with a full licence to drive the car.

Finally, if the car is just lying idle in Ireland unused, it may make more financial sense, and less hassle, to sell it and use the funds to hire a car when you need one here.

How to tell where a NI car was first registered?

Hi,

I am going to Belfast to look at a second-hand car. It's a 2021 vehicle  with two owners. How can I find out whether the car was first registered in Northern Ireland or GB?

Thank you

Joe Wall (Co Meath )

Expert answer

Hi Joe,

Ask to see the V5C 'logbook' as that should show the details. If the current owner is in Northern Ireland and they've had the car there for “a reasonable amount of time” (Revenue's words) then it shouldn't matter if the car was originally registered in the North or in GB anyway.

The format of the car's registration will usually give away where it was first registered, too. Northern Irish number plates look like ABZ 1234 or JBZ 5678 (two letters followed by a Z and then four numbers), while modern GB plates are AB21 XYZ (two letters and two numbers together, then three letters).

Another useful trick is to check the UK government website for the MOT history of a car. That's the UK's equivalent of the NCT and the Check the MOT history of a vehicle website clearly shows details of where the MOT was carried out. It's useful extra information.

How much to bring my Mitsubishi Triton home from Oz?

Hello,

I am permanently returning home to Ireland from Australia and considering shipping my 2020 Mitsubishi Triton GSR to Ireland. I am trying to get an estimate on all of the import charges that may apply.

Can you help with a breakdown of each charge applicable?

Diarmuid Harrington (Byron Bay)

Expert answer

Hi Diarmuid,

If you've owned the car and used it in Australia for at least six months before moving home, then you should have no taxation to pay on importing it into Ireland. Obviously, you'll have shipping costs and a small fee for re-registration, but no VRT, VAT or import duty should apply so long as you are eligible according to the official Transfer of Residence (ToR) rules. Check out Revenue's Transfer of Residence website for full details.
