In theory there's no reason why you could not do this. The taxation is a little different and there's a commercial vehicle equivalent to the NCT, but no legislation preventing a private individual from buying and driving a commercial vehicle.

However, anecdotal evidence suggests that it's not all that easy for private individuals to find insurance for such vehicles. Do some ringing around on that before you commit to buying and if you have no luck talking to the insurers directly then consider employing the services of an insurance broker.

We can help estimate, but remember some variables are beyond our control. You'll need the CO₂ rating for the VRT band and the OMSP (Open Market Selling Price), which isn't fixed or directly tied to your car's purchase price. It's Revenue's estimated selling price in Ireland and can be hard to predict. Also, if the car has many extras, Revenue will increase the OMSP.

I believe the CO₂ rating for that 4 Series should put the car into Band 9, at 15.25 per cent.

Taking €18,000 as the example OMSP, that would mean a VRT bill of €2,745.

Don't forget the NOx levy and, depending on where you're importing the car from, VAT and customs duty as well.

Without the full details it sounds like this is more a question for the institution you're hoping to get the loan from than us - and it depends on so many factors. A few thoughts:

- It would not be possible to obtain a UK car loan without a UK address.

- If you have a UK address, it may be possible to get a car loan from a bank or similar as they are unlikely to check where the car is actually registered. They're not likely to be bothered about that either as the car is rarely considered to be collateral in such circumstances.

- If, however, you mean car finance - PCP or hire purchase for example - then the car would have to be bought and registered in the same country as that in which the finance is taken out. If you are actually living in Ireland as well as working here, then the car would have to be reregistered here on importation, which is highly likely to be against the terms of the finance agreement.

- Finally, if you are a UK citizen that is working remotely for an Irish company, and you are looking to buy a UK car for use in the UK, then there should be no issues. Every finance institution will have its own rules on lending of course, but so long as you can show you have the means to repay the loan, it shouldn't matter which country the money is coming from.

The price after incentives is €32,987 and the applied incentives include the full €3,500 SEAI grant and a VRT rebate. Adding back on the SEAI grant the price becomes €36,487, which is the price after the VRT rebate has been applied.

VRT is seven per cent of the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP). Working back from €36,487, therefore, the OMSP in this case would be €39,233.33, i.e. the price of the 2025 e-C4 Max with no grants.

If the V5 shows the WLTP CO₂ emissions, or the WLTP rate is available for the car in question, then that is what the VRT band will be based on. If the WLTP rate is not shown or not available then Revenue will apply an 'uplifting' formula to the CO₂ emissions figure in a bid to bring it up to a WLTP-equivalent value.

In most cases, UK insurance companies do not classify a car brought over from Northern Ireland to Great Britain (England, Scotland, or Wales) as an import. This is because Northern Ireland is part of the UK, and cars registered there already meet UK standards.

Some insurers may ask if the car was first registered outside 'Great Britain' (which would mean those brought from Northern Ireland as well) and might require additional information. 

If the car was originally imported into Northern Ireland (e.g. from the Republic of Ireland or elsewhere), insurers might classify it as an import, but we wouldn't worry massively about that one.

The good news is that, as the car was registered before 2021 in Northern Ireland - and presumably has been there ever since - no customs duty or VAT is payable at all, just VRT and the NOx levy.

You will need paperwork from the seller to prove its status in the North, but otherwise you just bring it in and book it in for an inspection at an NCT centre to get your VRT bill etc. before registering it.

No version of the C4 has a front parking camera, if that's what you mean, but they do have a camera at the top of the windscreen that is part of the ADAS safety systems.

And how much of a reduction you get will vary massively from dealer to dealer. As the car is so new, I wouldn't bet on a massive discounts at this stage.

There really is a lot of choice out there, but we will try to help you narrow things down.

With your car as a trade-in, and the €16,000 budget on top, we'll look for cars up to about €27,000.

First up, narrowing the search to automatic SUVs post-2021 really limits your options to the Nissan Qashqai, which isn't very powerful, the Peugeot 3008 (which is quite rare) or the Skoda Karoq and Volkswagen Tiguan. The latter two are potentially worth a look as they're built on much the same underpinnings as your Ateca and their 2.0 TDI engines have plenty of go. There aren't many of them about with automatic gearboxes though.

Removing the constraint on that opens up the options considerably and one car that stands out for us right away is the Mazda CX-5. It's perhaps not as common as some others, but it's great to drive in particular and it should tick all your other boxes. Try to get hold of one to test drive for yourself.

A newer Ateca is of course an option, and we're big fans of the SEAT, but all the newer ones we found haven't a very powerful engine.

The Peugeot 3008 is another car we like and would encourage you to try it out for size. There are plenty of them about with a manual gearbox.

All of these should have the niceties you're looking for as well.

Other than the lack of engine noise, the graphics in the driver's instruments subtly alter if the car is in electric mode. You can also select an energy flow display for the central touchscreen to keep an easy eye on it.

Regardless, the 5008 Hybrid never runs for long distances on purely electric power as its battery is so small. Instead, it does lots of little bursts using the battery and motor, notably so when moving off from a standstill or barely moving along in slow traffic.
