I've bought an ex-demo car from a dealer in the North...
I purchased a car that was a demo model in the UK, and it was bought by the NI dealer to sell. I have the V5c logbook and the HMRC Duty Reimbursement Scheme form. The car was imported in a lot of four. Will I have to pay VAT and import duty?

Hi Fiona,
From the information provided (and we're assuming the car is over six months old), we do not believe you will have to pay VAT or import duty on this car, though of course you will be liable for VRT and the NOx levy.
Just make sure you can prove all of the above and that the car was actually physically in Northern Ireland.
Is there a new Skoda Karoq on the way?
Dear CompleteCar team,
I was wondering will there be a next generation Skoda Karoq in petrol, diesel and PHEV variants? While the Elroq has replaced an SUV of that size for Skoda, it does not have a rival for all the other SUVs of that size apart from the current Karoq offering, which I feel needs a fresh look. If nothing else to take on the new front look of the Elroq and Enyaq.
Any information would be welcome. Great insightful website. Keep up the good work.

Hi Brendan,
We can't answer that definitively, unfortunately, as there is no official word on it. The Karoq is certainly ageing and due replacement, but we agree there's plenty of demand still for a Skoda model in this space that is not only available with electric power.
Watch this space I guess...
Can a Northern dealer give me a form to ensure I don't pay VAT on import?
Hi,
A VW garage in Belfast says that I won't have to pay VAT on an EV they imported from UK mainland on a English plate when I bring it south as they can provide me with some form/ document saying it has been brought in according to the Windsor agreement. He said he's done this ten times this year already.
Will our pals in the NCT centres accept this?
Thank you

Hi Damian,
Yes, that is entirely possible. Make sure the paperwork shows that the car was imported into the North according to the Windsor Framework with clear reference to the car's identity, the dates and all costs paid.
VAT on importing a car on the Mobility scheme in the North?
If a car is on the Mobility scheme in the north of Ireland, do I have to pay VAT and customs charges when importing to the South? The car is a 2020 model.
Patsy Hanlon (Donegal )Aug 2025 Filed under: importing
Expert answer
Hi Patsy,
The VAT and import duty side of things is not affected by the car's modification for the Mobility scheme (though VRT and the NOx levy are).
So, same as any other car, if it has been in use in the North for a "reasonable amount of time" (according to Revenue), and you can prove that, then it will be exempt from VAT or import duty.
How much work to replace a Golf's crankshaft oil seal?
How much for a crankshaft seal to be repaired on a 172 1.6 TDI Volkswagen Golf?

Hi Eric,
Every garage has its own pricing structure, but you should know that this is a pretty large job, requiring about eight hours of work. I don't think you'd get much change from €400 no matter where you get the work done.
Is a 2008 Ferrari F430 exempt from VRT?
I'm considering buying a Ferrari F430 Spider from Northern Ireland and I live in Cork. It is a 2008. Is it exempt from VRT?

Hi David,
I'm afraid not - no car is exempt from VRT (unless you're moving into Ireland with your own car from abroad).
Where to get VW work done in Sligo?
Where can I get my car fitted with a timing chain in Sligo? It's a 2007 Volkswagen Golf 1.6.

Expert answer
Hi Gerry,
Connolly's Volkswagen Sligo is the official garage of course, but you may get a better price at an independent mechanic. I'm afraid we don't have any first-hand experience with any in the region so advise you to ask friends and family for a recommendation.
Any mechanic can change a timing chain, but it won't be cheap no matter where you get it done as it's a big job.
Why has an imported BMW 520d higher tax?
I bought a 2016 BMW 5 Series (F10 2.0-litre diesel) from a garage and was thinking that the tax would be €200 for the year as I had the exact same car last year, but was a 2015 - tax band on CO2 emission was 111-120g/km.
Now when taxing the 2016 car the tax for the year it's showing as €600 for a year at CO2 emissions of 156g/km. It is a Jap import. I just want to make sure if there could be a mistake on the system or it is actually 156g/km emissions before I tax it?

Expert answer
Hi Dilan,
The lower CO2 rating of that earlier car was according to the old “NEDC” standard. Any cars imported since 2021 with an NEDC-standard CO2 figure (as this Jap import would have had) would have had the number 'uplifted' by Revenue to make it comparable to the newer WLTP standard. It was trying to reduce the number of older, more polluting diesels being imported, but it just means that people may more motor tax at times, even if the cars are identical to those already registered in Ireland.
Of course, a Japanese model's CO2 figure could be a little different on top of all that.
Are there companies who will sort out VRT for you?
Are there companies who will sort out VRT for you?

Expert answer
Hi Matt,
If you mean are there companies that will do all the paperwork etc. and just give you a bill at the end, then yes there are. We've not used any of them ourselves so can't recommend any, but do a search online for those specialising in importing cars from the UK or Northern Ireland - and then look for public reviews of the services.
How to clear a non-running project car on importation?
Hi,
I'm considering buying a classic Ford from the UK which does not run and is a project car. How do I go about clearing it to Irish plates as it is now before I do any work to it? Do i need to trailer it to the NCT centre as it is?
Pete (Louth)Aug 2025 Filed under: importing
Expert answer
Hi Pete,
The process is the exact same as for a running car. You will need to make an appointment with the NCTS and have the car inspected, and pay VRT, even if it is indeed on a trailer or recovery truck.
If the Ford is over 30 years old the VRT will only be €200 in any case.
