My new L200's stop-start is erratic...

Hi,

I have a new Mitsubishi L200 series 6 Barbarian. Done less than 500 miles, mixed driving. The auto stop-start is totally unreliable. Green light comes on first start, goes out, may occasionally flash whilst driving. Over a 40-mile trip the stop-start functioned only once. Worked less than half a dozen times since purchase. Dealer says no fault or error codes.

Any ideas?

Hi Dave,

I'm surprised to hear that from a new truck where the battery will be in good condition, but stop-start systems regularly don't work as people expect. The system measures loads of variables before deciding whether the engine will be stopped, including the temperature of the engine and even the outside temperature. If it's cold weather, it may not work at all. If you're using items that are a big electrical drain, it may not operate.

Can I apply for a motorcycle A2 permit?

I just passed my motorbike theory test. It says AM motorcycles/mopeds. Does this mean I can't apply for an A2 learner permi?

Hi Terry,

The type of licence that you can apply for once you pass your theory test depends on your age. If you’re under 18 then you must first apply for your A1 licence and complete your Initial Basic Training (IBT) before applying for your driving test.

If you’re 18 or older, you can apply for your A2 licence through Direct Access. As you’ve passed your theory test you can apply and start your IBT (modules 1,3 and 5) on an A2 bike. After six months, when you pass your driving test you’ll have a full A2 licence.

For the full A licence, you can apply post-theory test again through Direct Access providing you are aged 24 or over or through Progressive Access from age 20 and up. The same process applies with regard to IBT and your test.

You can find more detailed explanation on the RSA’s website here.

Age limit on 'subscribe and drive' services?

Hi,

I would like to know what age restriction limit there is for the subscribe and drive service, since I am 81 years old? My driving licence renewal date is Feb 2023.

Thank you.

Hi Herbert,

We’ve been in touch with GoCar, which is the current leading supplier of subscriptions for instant, on-street, vehicle hire and drive, and there’s good news and bad news. The bad news is that, normally, GoCar’s insurance only covers those up to the age of 75. However, the good news is that there’s potential for discretion. GoCar might waive the age limit if you meet certain criteria, which include  that you have a valid licence; that you can provide a doctor's letter to say they are fit to drive; and that you can show that you were insured to drive within the last two years, and haven't had an accident in five years. It’s worth a try, anyway...

How much to ask for a damaged 1999 Colt?

Want to get rid of a 99 Mitsubishi Colt 1.3 (bit of cosmetic damage on the side but driving really well). Any idea how much I should ask for it?

Hi Ruth,

With the damage I’m afraid it’s not going to be worth much. Pristine, it might make €1,000, but with damage probably more like €300-€500.

Petrol or diesel Skoda Octavia?

Would a 2018 1.0-litre petrol Octavia cost much more in petrol costs than a 1.6 diesel to run in a year, when I will be doing 16,000 miles approx?

Expert answer

Hi Donal,

Well, fuel consumption depends very much on your own driving style and where (and to an extent when) you do most of your driving. That said, in general, we wouldn’t expect that 1.0 TSI engine to be much thirstier overall than the 1.6 diesel. In our tests, both engines are in and around as economical as each other and you should expect to get around 50mpg from either with a light foot. The diesel may be a little better than the petrol option at a sustained high-speed cruise. However, with such low annual mileage, we suspect that the petrol engine will cost less to maintain in the long run. It's probably the best option for you.

What could be up with this Hyundai ix35?

My sister's car, a 151 Hyundai ix35 that she ony bought six months ago, decided to cut out on her when she was out driving today. What could the problem be? The engine malfunction light came on. Could it be to do with the timing chain in it or a relay in the engine or something else altogether?

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Hi Alan,

It's very difficult to analyse such a thing remotely, so it'll need a good mechanic to look at it and probably plug it into a diagnostic computer to retrieve error codes. We will say that the ix35 is generally a very reliable car, but one  known issue is to do with its engine control unit (ECU), which may need to be reprogrammed in some circumstances.

Looking for European insurance for 30 days.

Hi,

Do you know of any insurance companies that will provide comprehensive cover for driving in Europe for more than thirty days?

Thanks

Philip

Expert answer

Hi Philip,

It depends on what you’re doing. Are you taking your own car to Europe? In that case, contact your current insurer as cover generally extends to the rest of Europe, and you may only have to pay a small ’top-up’ fee to make sure that the cover is comprehensive, and lasts for more than 30 days.

If you’re renting a car, then insurance is included, and you can always pay extra to expand the cover to fully comprehensive. While car rental agencies charge a proverbial arm and leg for this, there are independent insurers who will add-on the extra cover for a reasonable fee.

My Skoda has too-light steering...

My 2014 Skoda Octavia Estate has very light steering; it feels like driving on ice and the tyre pressure is OK.

Hi Andy,

That's a tricky one to analyse from afar, but we do know that an issue can arise from the electric power steering motor that may lead to strange sensations through the wheel. Best to have it checked by a good mechanic as soon as possible.

Which of these Audis or BMWs to go for?!

Audi A6 3.0 quattro S line or BMW 530d Performance Spec or BMW 320d Performance Spec. (2014-2015, €15-19k)?

Hi Barry,

Depends; if you really love your driving, and appreciate great steering and chassis control, go for the 530d. If you prefer a more spacious interior and refinement, go for the Audi.

I'll be transporting horses...

Hi,

I am looking into purchasing a vehicle for transporting horses (have the EB licence) and would like to know more about taxes for suitable vehicles for private use. If I were to purchase a Toyota Hilux, what tax bracket does it come under? If I were to look at a horse lorry (would have to get the licence) what tax do they come under if it's for private use vs commercial? Would be looking at a small lorry up to 7.5 tonne (max including load). Also, do you have an idea of rough costs of insurance for these vehicles?

Thanks

Clare Gallagher (Kilcock)

Expert answer

Hi Clare,

A Hilux has a 2.4-litre engine (well, the current one does, but remember that older versions had 3.0-litre units) so if you want to tax it as a private vehicle that’s going to be €1,034 per year for motor tax. I’m pretty sure you can’t register and tax a horse lorry for private use as it’s over the 3,500kg limit for private cars. The tax therefore would be the commercial rate of €333 per year. As for insurance, that’s probably more down to you and your own driving record than it is to the vehicle, but the good news is that there are specialist horse lorry insurers, such as Wexford Insurance, who would probably be able to give you a good quote.
