Should I repair my Mondeo before trading in?

I have a 2008 Mondeo 1.8 TDCi with 230,000 kilometres on the clock that I was planning on trading in against a new car. There are a couple of nasty scrapes on two of the wheel arches that I've been quoted €977 to repair and the rear axle bushes need replacing, which will cost another €350. Other than that the car is mechanically sound with all servicing and wear and tear maintenance up to date. The car has a full service history through a main Ford dealer and I've owned it since new. Given that at best, I'd expect to trade it in for €3k or scrappage, is it worth my while getting the work before trading in, or would I be better off taking the hit as part of a trade in?

Hi Martin,

That’s a tough question as it’s very hard to know what an individual dealer would offer you and whether or not the damage and repairs in question will make a significant difference to the value. What I’d suggest is go to the dealer with whom you’re thinking of trading it in (or a number of them, if you haven’t yet decided) and have a very honest chat with them about the car. The fact that it has a full service history is very good, so what you need to find out is are you going to make more on the trade in than the cost of the repairs, or are you going to lose more than they’d cost if you leave them?

That’s the crucial question.

How do you rate the Ford Fiesta 1.4 diesel?

I am thinking of buying a 2008 Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi. How do you rate that engine and do they give much trouble?

Hi Martin,

There are a couple of things to check - that engine needs a lower auxiliary belt change at around 120,000km so make sure that's been done. You need to be watchful for the diesel particulate filter clogging up and the return pipes for the fuel injectors can leak, so if there's a strong smell of diesel when you lift the bonnet, those will need replacing.

I'm thinking of buying a UK Ford Mondeo.

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a 2012 Mondeo, UK reg, and I just want to know has it a timing belt and wet belt or a chain?

Hi Sean,

I assume it's a 2.0 TDCi model? If so it uses a 'dry' belt to drive the camshafts, which has a service interval of 200,000km. However, there is also a tiny chain that links the two camshafts and this is apparently prone to snapping, so make sure that this is changed whenever you change the timing belt, even though it's supposed to be a service-free item.

Can you tell me about the new Ford Ka+?

New Ford Ka: when is it in Ireland and what are the prices please?

Also, is a new Fiesta on the way? When and what price?

Hi Fergal,

The new Ka+ will be here in June and will cost from €13,050. You can find out much, much more about it in our Ford Ka+ news item. The new Fiesta is a bit more of an unknown and we certainly don’t have prices for it yet. It’s due to launch in Europe in the first quarter of 2017, but Ford Ireland may decide to keep its powder dry and launch it here closer to the 172 registration change in July of next year. It’s likely to be a little larger than the current car (although not by much, as the same basic structure is being retained) and the engine line up will be entirely the new-generation three-cylinder EcoBoost petrol and the four-cylinder 1.5-litre TDCi diesels. It’s likely to also be more expensive than the current car – the fact that Ford is launching a five-door Ka at a cheap-ish price, and the continuing efforts to push the Ford brand upmarket (Vignale, Mustang, GT, Edge etc.) means that the next Fiesta will probably be more sophisticated but more expensive too.

When will the new Ford Kuga be in Ireland?

When will the new facelifted Ford Kuga be available for order in the Republic of Ireland?

Expert answer

Hi James,

The big draw for the updated Kuga will be the availability of Ford’s 1.5 TDCi diesel engine, which will bring the Kuga’s running costs down significantly, not least because it will have a 115g/km CO2 emissions rating. It’ll be here in the autumn, once Ford has finished launching the new Edge SUV, but given the nature of the Irish car market, supply will probably be a bit restricted until January 2017.

When to change my Mondeo's timing belt?

Hi guys,

I have a 2009 Ford Mondeo 1.8 TDCi When should I change the timing belt? I have 87k miles on clock. Is the answer the same as for the 2008 model that somebody else asked about?

Cheers

Hi Donncha,

Yes, it’s the same – Ford recommends a change at 125,000 miles (or 200,000km) or every ten years, but as with any cam belt, we’d suggest having it replaced more frequently than that.

When do I change my Ford Focus timing belt?

Does my 2008 Ford Focus Titanium Estate 1.6 TDCi have a timing belt? If so, when should it be changed?

Hi Jorg,

Yes it does and the recommended change interval is 125,000 miles (210,000km) or every 10 years.

What's the Ford Galaxy 1.6 TDCi like?

What is the 2012 Ford Galaxy Zetec 1.6 TDCi like? Is the engine strong enough?

Hi Gerry,

It's fine, and is good for motorway or city work, but if you habitually carry a full load of people or cargo and need a bit more oomph for overtaking then consider an upgrade to the 2.0 TDCi.

Is mileage a problem for a 141 Ford Mondeo?

I am looking at buying a second hand Ford Mondeo from a dealer. I have seen a 141 1.6 TDCi Zetec and the mileage is 65,000 miles (104,000km). Should I be concerned about this high mileage as it's only two years old?

Trevor Doyle (Dublin)

Expert answer

Hi Trevor,

The mileage is high, but it's all down to how the car has been driven and looked after. If it has done mostly motorway miles, and has been serviced properly and to schedule, then it should be fine. If there are any gaps in the service history, walk away - plenty more out there to choose from.

Ford Mondeo 1.6 TDCi: belt change interval?

When does my timing belt need changing? I have a 2012 Ford Mondeo 1.6 TDCi Edge. Ford recommend 125,000 miles, but I see another question answered for a Titanium model at 140,000km.

Hi Niall,

Our information is indeed 140,000km or every 10 years (whichever comes first) for the 2012 Mondeo 1.6 TDCi. It doesn't matter what the trim level is. Call up your local Ford dealer service department with your registration number for clarification.
