Can I fit three boosters in back of an E-Class?

Can I fit three booster seats in the rear of a 2010-12 Mercedes-Benz E 250 CDI?

Expert answer

Hi Pat,

It depends on the seats you're using and how old your kids are. I'd suspect you may struggle, but it's worth going down for a test-drive mob-handed, with the kids and their seats, and see if you can all fit. If not, a good idea is to track down a Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate with the pop-up seats in the boot.  Seven seats without the MPV misery.

Do all new cars have bucket-style seats?

Hi,

I am looking at new cars and seem to find the majority have bucket type seats, which I find rub/aggravate my right thigh. Has anybody ever complained about this? The only car that does not produce this annoying affect seems to be the Citroen C4

Brendan

Expert answer

Hi Brendan,

Pretty much the entire industry has long since gone over to bucket-style seats, not least because they offer better back support when cornering, but also locate your body mass more centrally, which allows the driver's airbag to work better. Actually, the C4 Cactus' seats are technically bucket-style, but they're just a bit broader and softer than the norm. I don't think you'll have much luck finding a true non-bucket seat these days, but all I can suggest is to try as many as you can and see if you can find one that's comfortable for you.

Would a small new estate suit us?

We have two small kids. We live in the city but like to go camping in the summer. Can you recommend a car suitable for city driving but still with enough room to carry camping equipment? We currently have a Mazda5 diesel, but the DPF gives us trouble due to us doing mainly short journeys. I was thinking of a petrol estate such as Fabia Combi or a petrol Corolla. Any suggestions please ?

Expert answer

Hi Ray,

The new Fabia Combi might well be worth looking at as the boot is absolutely enormous, but you may find the back seats a little tight as the kids get bigger. A Toyota Auris Touring Sports estate would certainly make a good buy - roomy and hugely reliable and Toyota's old 1.4-litre petrol engine has always been a good unit. Also worth looking at the Kia cee'd Sportwagon or Skoda Octavia Combi.

Is a new Fiat 500L worth a look?

Is the Fiat 500L worth a look?

Offer of €5k scrappage at the moment and looking to change car. Currently have 2004 Ford Focus C-Max and three kids.

Hi Donal,

Yeah, it is actually. I know it's not the best looking thing around but it's actually quite nice to drive, very spacious and pretty well made too. And you get a five-year warranty now too, so that should put any unreliability worries to bed. If you've got three kids, it might be worth having a look at the 500L MPW, which is even uglier but has extra seats in the boot.

I need a new car to accommodate my mum.

Hi,

I'm planning on buying a new car to accommodate my elderly mother. She has arthritis in her knees and has limited mobility in her lower limbs. She's 5'5" and uses two sticks, but I also need room for a wheelchair. I originally thought a higher car, e.g. an SUV, but they are too high for her. I'd appreciate any advice or car recommendations.

Hi Orla,

I think your best bet could be to go for a small van-based MPV, such as the Citroen Berlingo or a Volkswagen Caddy Life. They have seating positions that are a bit higher, but not so high as to need to climb up,  and there will be plenty of room in the back for a wheelchair. In fact many have been converted with wheelchair ramps and lifts in the back, which may be of some use.

Hope that helps and all the best to your mum.

How much to change an Altea's head gasket?

How much should it cost to get the head gasket supplied and fitted on a 2006 SEAT Altea 1.6 petrol?

Tristan Jacobs (Galway )

Expert answer

Hi Tristan,

Prices for labour will vary depending on where you get the work done, but we spoke with a SEAT dealer to get an indication and were told that it really will depend on if other components have been damaged in the overheating process. An estimation was anywhere between €400 and €800. Best thing to do is bring the car to a garage you trust and get an estimate there.

Differences between the Audi A3 models?

What are the differences between an Audi A3 SE and an Audi A3 Sport, year 2012?

Alison Mccarter (Londonderry)

Feb 2016 Filed under: optional extras

Expert answer

Hi Alison,

Audi has never had a 'Sport' trim on the current A3, so I suspect if you've seen one advertised it's the seller getting confused and mis-labelling the S line trim. Over and above standard specification, the SE trim adds 16-inch alloy wheels, nicer seat trim, front fog lights, rear floor mats, aluminium interior trim, a front centre armrest, extra map lights, cruise control, rear parking sensors, a colour display for the trip computer and an iPod connector.

S line gives you Xenon headlamps with LED running lights and LED rear lights, 18-inch alloys, black cloth headlining, Audi Drive Select (which means you can toggle between Sport, Normal, Comfort and Eco modes), a three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel, sportier exterior body kit, bucket seats, S line logos everywhere and lower, firmer S line suspension.

What cars can fit three child seats in the back?

What cars/SUVs can fit three child seats across the back?

Oonagh Mangan (Innishannon, Co Cork)

Feb 2016 Filed under: child or baby seats

Expert answer

Hi Oonagh,

Not many; you really need to be looking at MPVs such as the Volkswagen Touran and Toyota Verso, or the Ford S-Max or SEAT Alhmabra if you fancy something bigger. That said, the recently introduced Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage are just about wide enough, but it depends on what seats you're using. Also, larger seven-seat 4x4s such as the Volvo XC90 and Land Rover Discovery will take three-abreast, but they're expensive to buy.

What are the most reliable cars in Ireland?

I would like to know the 50 most reliable and least reliable cars sold in Ireland since 2012.

Brendan Walsh (Oldcastle)

Expert answer

Hi Brendan,

There is no specific market data for Ireland in this respect. The old rule of thumb still holds true - if you want ultimate reliability, buy a Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Suzuki, Subaru or Mazda. You could probably pretty easily add Kia and Hyundai to that list too now.

The best I can do for you is to point you towards the results of the JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study for the UK market in 2015. An independent research agency, JD Power ranks the various brands surveyed by problems per 100 cars - although it's worth remembering that those problems can range from minor electrical niggles to total engine failure, so you can't read everything into the stats. The last set of figures, ranked from best-performing to worst, were:

1. Skoda
2. Kia
3. Suzuki
4 Nissan
5. Mercedes-Benz
6. Toyota
7. Volvo
8. Volkswagen
9. Opel (Vauxhall)
10. Peugeot
11. SEAT
12. Mazda
13. MINI
14. Ford
15. Citroen
16. Renault
17. Honda
18. Fiat
19. Hyundai
20. Land Rover
21. Dacia
22. Audi
23. Jaguar
24. BMW
25. Alfa Romeo
26. Chevrolet

Which auto for a low mileage driver?

I do 3,200km per year.

Any comment on the type of vehicle I should look for? Must be automatic and nearly new.

Stan Quinn (Dublin)

Feb 2016 Filed under: choosing used car

Expert answer

Hi Stan,

Are you sure you mean 3,200? That's incredibly low mileage so I'd be suggesting something small such as a Volkswagen up! or a Hyundai i10.

If you mean 32,000km then I'd say you need a compact diesel. A SEAT Leon 1.6 TDI DSG would seem to fit the bill.
