Is the electric Opel Astra estate available in Ireland?
I love the look of the Opel Astra Sports Tourer but if I was interested it would be in an electric version. The opel.ie website is very confusing as to whether that exists.
On https://www.opel.ie/cars/sports-tourer/overview-features.html it says "Make way for the new generation Opel Astra Sports Tourer. Choose petrol, diesel or 100% electric".
Further down that page, it says "The future is electric. Discover Astra Sports Tourer Plug-in Hybrid. Performance without compromise. Are you ready for a change?"
Now, plug-in hybrid might be great but it's not 100 per cent electric. I've tried the car configurator and the price list but nowhere is there a reference to an electric Astra Sports Tourer.
Does it exist?

I spoke with a representative of Opel Ireland today and they asked me to apologise to you for the confusion.
The electric version of the Sports Tourer is indeed available, but it's what's called a "special order" model, so it has been removed from the public-facing price list etc. If you contact your local Opel dealer, they should be able to talk you through the process of ordering one.
Don't forget to read our review of the Opel Astra Electric (though we've not tested the estate model).
Update on 2 Sep 2025: Opel Ireland got in touch to say the online documentation has been updated. You can get the new Opel Astra price list here.
Does a UK citizen working in Ireland have to import their car?

My daughter lives/works in Maynooth but goes to the North occasionally for work. She wants to buy a Volkswagen Polo from the North (cheaper obviously) and use it mostly in the Republic. She is from the UK (Kent) and has residency to work/pay taxes etc. Will she need to import it?

Unless your daughter has a permanent address in the North where she can register the car, then yes, she will have to import it.

You say that the 23 per cent VAT to be paid on the car being imported from the UK is based on the customs value which according to Revenue includes the purchase price. Does this mean the purchase price I paid in the UK and the customs value reflects the UK purchase price or is the 23 per cent VAT based on the customs value or purchase price of the car in Ireland?
Apologies but when I read up on it, it does not state if it's UK or Irish customs value or purchase price so it's a little confusing and I don't want to end up buying a car and be hit with a huge VAT invoice.
If you could break it down that would be great. So, I take a flight to UK, buy the car for £11,500 (or €13,610.77) and drive it back myself using the ferry. What VAT is due? I know import customs duty is 10 per cent, I'm just stuck on VAT.

Hi Michael,
VAT at 23 per cent is charged on the customs value, which as I mentioned before includes the purchase price (in the UK), the cost of transport and insurance, plus customs duties.
In your case, the purchase price is €13,610.77, which means customs duties of €1,361.08 (10 per cent). To those you’ll have to add the transport and insurance costs to bring the car back - i.e. your ferry fare. Let’s say €200. All that adds up to €15,171.85 as the customs value. The VAT should then be 23 per cent of that, or €3,489.53.
Please double check our calculations and take this as guidance only.
Looking to buy a new small car for under €30,000.
I am looking to gift a car to my wife. With a range of 242 offers, I am inclined to buy a new one. She is still taking her driving lessons and needs hand controls to drive the car due to her foot disability.
She needs a small car with two mandatory features: an automatic transmission and adaptive cruise control. I have narrowed down some options with the budget I have for €30k, but confused what to consider: Suzuki Swift, Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Yaris Luna Hybrid, Dacia Sandero Stepaway or MG3 Hybrid? I am open to suggestions but it should have the two mandatory features.

Let's go through your list for a start:
Suzuki Swift: Even the top-spec model with loads of options comes in under budget, has adaptive cruise control and can be had with an automatic gearbox. Easy to drive, well-specified, should be reliable, though doesn't feel as substantial as some of the other cars listed. Read our Suzuki Swift reviews here.
Volkswagen Polo: Only the Style and R-Line versions come with adaptive cruise control, but those are slightly out of budget if fitted with the DSG automatic gearbox so unless you stretch the budget this isn't an option. That's a shame as it's probably the best car in this list all things considered. Read our Volkswagen Polo reviews here.
Toyota Yaris: The 1.5-litre hybrid is an automatic by default, and as you've identified, the Luna comes with adaptive cruise control. It's the only version in the Yaris lineup within budget with those items and it's an excellent car. The rear seats aren't huge, but the fronts are fine, it drives fantastically, should be very reliable and the hybrid system is efficient and good to drive. Dacia Sandero Stepway: An automatic gearbox is available, and even the most expensive version is well within budget, but this car can't be had with adaptive cruise control - only the non-adaptive type is fitted. Otherwise, it's a spacious and well-equipped car for the money. Read our Dacia Sandero reviews here.
MG3: All versions are automatic and come with adaptive cruise control, so those boxes are ticked. And even the most expensive version is within budget so it's a realistic possibility. It's the most powerful car here, which is probably not important, but it's quite efficient as well. The Yaris is a more polished product, but the MG has a little more space. Hopefully that's all of help. I'd strongly recommend you and your wife go check out a shortlist of cars in person and test drive them to see which you prefer, as it will come down to personal preference.

In general, yes, the 2006 Polo is quite reliable. However, you have to adjust your expectations given that it would be over 14 years old now. Go for as simple a model as you can find and best to go for petrol rather than diesel to keep the maintenance costs low.
Not VAT-registered: can I still get a van?

Hi Andrew,
In theory, you can register and tax a commercial vehicle without a VAT number, but it’s tricky. Generally speaking, you have to show that your business is registered for tax before you can apply for commercial rate motor tax, but there certainly have been individual cases of people explaining that they have a small business that’s not VAT-registered, but still need a van for their work, and the tax office has taken a lenient view. Your best bet is to fill in an RF111 form, use your PPS number instead of a VAT number and then explain your circumstances to your local motor tax office. And hope for the best.
Should my Polo's stop-start be working cold?
The stop-start system on my 2019 1.0-litre petrol Polo is enabled with a stone cold engine: if I drive 100 yards after a overnight stop the stop-start is enabled. This can't be logical as the diesels all have to reach temperature before enabling it. Spoke to Volkswagen, but can't get a straight answer. I have also driven other petrol Polos and they are exactly the same.

Hi John,
There's a lot less going on in the exhaust aftertreatment of a modern petrol engine than the equivalent diesel so I suspect the diesel needs the warm-up more. It may also be due to the extra strain on the starter and battery due to the high compression of the diesel engine. When the oil is cold, the friction may be higher, causing a higher strain again.
Either way, it's nothing to worry about.
Does the Polo have known engine issues?

I don't know where to turn, but you might be able to help. I have a 2015 VW Polo bought a as an ex-hire from a VW main dealer in Dublin. Full service history etc. There was some engine noise so I brought it back in to be told that essentially the bottom half of the engine needs to be rebuilt (although by their own admission have not done any report or can give me same to confirm the position). My question is, do you know of any history of engine problems in 2015 or similar 1.0-litre Polo engines?

We know of an issue with the clutch assembly that causes what sounds like engine noise in the naturally aspirated 1.0-litre Polo engine. In the 1.0 TSI models, apparently a fault with the engine control unit (ECU) can cause whining from the engine as well. Neither of those sound like the problem you have, though.
