Renault Megane E-Tech or Tesla Model 3?

Hi,

I'm planning to change to a new EV. I've narrowed my choice down to two cars - the Megane E-Tech and the new Tesla Model 3. Which in your opinion is the better car, and why?

Many thanks

Peter

Expert answer

Hi Ainsley,

In our opinion, the better EV out of the pair is the Tesla Model 3 - but there are caveats to that, and one very big one to consider. Subjective, of course, but the Megane E-Tech is nicer to look at outside and in, and the quality of its interior fittings are also better. It also drives very sweetly, so it's a strong contender.

However, the Model 3 has greater one-shot driving range (both official and real-world), is the more refined car at speed and, once you've tried it you'll realise just how much of a USP the proprietary Supercharger system is for Tesla; there is no finer public recharging experience than this.

The big caveat with the Model 3, though, is the placement of the indicators and the windscreen wiper controls on the steering wheel in the facelifted  version - it's a cackhanded piece of ergonomics if you come to it direct from a car with conventional column stalks.

On top of that, there's a vastly different customer service model at work, as Renault has a nationwide network of dealers you can just pop into, and Tesla does not.

We'd suggest you take all that into consideration while you go test-drive both cars for yourself.

Please do let us know which one you go for.

Should I buy this Golf with no service history?

Hello there,

I am interested in buying a used 2018 VW Golf from a dealership. The dealer is SIMI registered. The car ticks all the boxes, but it does not have a service history. They only have hand written info in the car servicing booklet (no stamps from mechanic/dealership) and there are no receipts. The car has 120k on the clock and the dealer has said they know the previous owner and they replaced the timing belt at 100k, but there is no receipt of this work being done.

Should I avoid the purchase or take the dealership at its word?

Hi Karen,

I'm afraid we are no better-placed to make that decision for you as we know nothing about the car or the dealership. If the dealership says it replaced the belt then it's not likely to be lying about that, and you could pay an independent mechanic to take off the timing belt's top cover to inspect the belt.

I'd be as worried about oil and filter changes, which are crucial for the long life of an engine.

If you have any doubts, walk away from the deal, as there will be other cars.

Can I use the new motor tax system on a commercial?

Hi,

I see that you answered a previous question asking about changing a commercial Kuga to a private vehicle. Your answer was yes but the tax would go by the old cc (engine size) taxation method. Is it possible to change from commercial tax to the newer CO2 system?

I'm afraid not. Seems crazy, doesn't it?

NOx rating for a 2019 Skoda Karoq?

Hi,

What is the NOx value for a 2019 Skoda Karoq with CO2 value of 133g/km? It's the 1.5-litre TSI 110 with the DSG automatic gearbox.

Expert answer

Hi Patrick,

The exact figure will be on the car's log book, and we assume you mean the 1.5 TSI 150 as the 1.5-litre engine only came in that guise in the Karoq.

We found data for three different UK trim lines (I'm assuming you're looking at importing from the UK) and all came back with a NOx rating of 29mg/km. However, the highest CO2 rating for these cars was 127g/km, not 133g/km, so it's possible that the actual NOx figure of the car you're looking at might be a little higher than 29mg/km.

It won't be much higher anyway so that's a good estimate for you to calculate the NOx levy from.

Why no Mazda logo on my MX-5?

Why does my 1991 MX-5 SE not have a Mazda emblem on the front?

Hi Richard,

Is it an import from Japan or elsewhere? Or is it a special edition? It's not unusual for imported cars and special editions to get different bonnet badges.

Any limit on number of cars I can bring with me from the UK?

My wife and I are moving to Ireland from England and we have two cars with my name on the V5 - though one is my wife's. We were thinking of buying a campervan and taxing and registering it here for the six months before bringing it in without charges. Is there a limit to the amount of vehicles you can bring in? Can't find answer on Revenue website.

Hi Rory,

The answer is thankfully pretty straightforward. No, there’s no upper limit on the number of cars you can bring in, but you have to make sure that they all qualify for VRT relief under the regulations.

Full response from Revenue below:

"When transferring residence into the State, a person can apply for relief from Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) for their personal vehicles.  Whilst there is no limit on the number of personal vehicles in respect of which an individual can avail of Transfer of Residence relief, each vehicle must individually fulfil all qualifying criteria. One of these qualifying criteria requires that the vehicle must be in use by the applicant for a period of 185 days prior to their relocation."

What are the taxes on importing a hearse?

Hi,

We are thinking of importing a Mercedes Hearsette from the UK (2021). As a commercial vehicle, can you advise what charges we will incur?

Many thanks, Fran

Hi Fran,

Full hearses are classified as Category C for VRT purposes as a "listed vehicle". The VRT is fixed at just €200.

However, you still must complete a Customs import declaration before the car arrives, and you are likely to be liable for customs duty (at 10 per cent) and VAT (at 23 per cent) on the value of the car.

Do I need to pay VAT on this CLA import?

I got a 2013 CLA from Newry that arrived before Brexit but wasn’t registered in NI and was sold back to England. I’m unable to get my VRT done as they say I need to pay VAT also. Is there any way around this?

Hi Adedapo,

We don't seen any way you can avoid that, I'm afraid, as the car was first registered in England and is there now (if we are understanding that correctly).

Can I fix a Megane Cabrio's door?

I have a 2006 Renault Megane cabriolet. Last month an idiot in an old 4x4 reversed into the passenger side back panel (behind the door) creating what can only be described as a meteor strike of a dent! Would a reputable body repair shop be able to "beat out" the dent, or is the panel in question reinforced from the inside and not accessible?

This is what a repair shop has told me... or is he just worried about further damage?! I really would appreciate an honest answer to this dilemma which is becoming a total insurance nightmare!

Hi Phil,

Without seeing it for ourselves we wouldn't like to say for sure, but we do know that massive dents are not ever easily repaired as you've described and panel beaters prefer to replace the panel completely where possible.

Can I claim back VAT on a car lease?

As a sole trader can I claim back the VAT on a car lease?

Hi Adrian,

For the most part yes. This is from Revenue: "In the case of leasing VAT deductibility is based on 20% of the monthly leasing charges."
