How to check the history of a UK car?
How do I check the history of a car imported from the UK?

Hi F D,
So long as you have the UK registration then you can do it through the larger Irish car-history checking sites such as Cartell.ie and Motorcheck.ie. It's also worth availing of the free UK government's service for extra information.
What does AA approved mean?
I was looking to change my car for another and was looking at a few imported ones from a few dealers but with warnings about no history on cars from the UK, I was not too happy to buy until I noticed “AA approved" on the dealer’s ad. If AA approved, can I assume that the car is under some sort of guarantee?

Hi F D,
Full details of the AA Approved car network can be found on the AA Ireland website, and it does offer some reassurance, plus 12 months of AA Roadside Rescue. It isn't a warranty though. The dealer you are buying the car from should give you full details of the warranty they provide with the car.
Do I have any comeback on this car I bought?
I purchased a car from a seller posing as a private seller but is actually a registered dealer with multiple listings. Same day, driving home and the engine management light comes on. I took it to a mechanic who is quoting me circa €700 to diagnose a potential EGR problem.
Just wondering since the seller is a “disguised dealer” do I have any comeback? With regards to the fault the car drives okay just the light comes on and cruise control does not work. Initially thought fault was a faulty MAP sensor but mechanic insisted it was fine and wants to inspect the EGR.

Hi Rob,
I'd suggest not spending any money on the car until you've gone back to the seller. Tell them you know they're a trader and you'd like them to fix the issue. If they won't play ball, gather as much evidence as you can and then get the CPCC (Competition and Consumer Protection) involved.
Best of luck with it
Will I replace my Mercedes with a hybrid?
I drive a 2020 Mercedes E 220 d with 61,200km on the clock and full MBSH covering circa 12,000km per annum. I have recently retired and will be doing less mileage and was wondering whether petrol or hybrid (e.g. Toyota Camry or Lexus ES 300h) is the best option and what choices are there if one were to go new or nearly new.
Thank you and look forward to your answer

Hi Richard,
It certainly sounds like you're the ideal candidate for a hybrid. Indeed, with less than 12,000km a year, you could easily live with a plug-in hybrid or a fully electric car if you wanted to install a home charger.
A hybrid such as the Camry or Lexus would be nearly as efficient as your diesel Mercedes in most situations, and likely to mean much lower running costs in the long term. I'd certainly recommend a hybrid over a purely petrol alternative.
In terms of new vs. nearly new, there are pros and cons to both. Nearly new cars have usually suffered a big chunk of their depreciation already, though you can't finance them the same way as you can a new car and of course, you're limited in choice to what's on the market at that moment in time rather than choosing your ideal specification.
On that front, it's worth noting that the Toyota Camry is no longer on sale as a new car, though the Lexus ES is and it's an exceptionally well-made car. Almost all other hybrids in this sector are plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), however, so you'd ideally need to have a way to charge them up at home for them to be of use.
What's up with my Insignia's gearbox?
I bought my Vauxhall Insignia Estate 1.6-litre diesel from Perrys Main Vauxhall Dealers in Huddersfield in July 2021 which was first registered in September 2016. To date, it has recorded 41,000 miles approximately on its odometer with two previous owners.
I had its annual service and MOT carried out a local garage with an excellent reputation in July 2023 in July 2024 which included supplying new front discs, pads and offside callipers which was completed and paid for on 8/7/24.
Shortly afterwards the clutch burnt out and had to be supplied and fitted along with a dual-mass flywheel completed and paid for on 19/7/24. The vehicle was returned to the garage for bleeding on 25/7/24 due to the poor-quality gear change.
The vehicle was returned to the garage on 23/10/24 with a problem in selecting reverse gear and subsequently first gear without switching the engine off. The manager confirmed this work and any further work relating to this problem would be on a free-of-charge basis under warranty.
Subsequently, the garage has fitted two more clutches to replace those burnt out and a master cylinder during November 2024. Unfortunately, the problem of selecting reverse and first gear still persists, and the vehicle is going back into the garage tomorrow for further investigation.
Have you any suggestion that could resolve this problem?
Cheers, Michael

Expert answer
Hi Michael,
I don't think we can add much to this other than to say that it sounds like a selector issue, which may have been dislodged or damaged when the work on the clutch was done. However, I'd have expected the gear selection issue to be there from the start if it was that and this sounds worrying like an internal gearbox problem now.
Unless the garage somehow damaged the gearbox during the work, I don't see how they could be responsible for it, but if they're taking responsibility for fixing it for you then they are in a better position than me to advise you what is causing the issues.
I do hope it gets sorted soon.
Looking to buy a BYD as a commercial...
Hi,
I am interested in getting a BYD vehicle as a commercial vehicle. Can you tell me if the electric Seal Design saloon can be used as a commercial car? If not can its new BYD Seal U hybrid?
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,
There's nothing stopping you from using any car for business purposes, but there are no official commercial versions of the BYD cars on sale at this time. Though you've not said what you will use the vehicle for, I'd suggest that the Seal saloon is not suited for carrying bulky goods at all, as lovely as it is as a car.
The Seal U SUV is much better suited as it has a large boot and rear seats that can be folded down. You could in theory have those rear seats removed completely and turn it into a commercial, but as it's so new we don't know of anyone that has done that.
The Seal U runs on petrol, obviously, which you couldn't claim VAT back on, so that may rule it out for many.

Can I get a refund on my lemon of a Jaguar?
Am I due a refund from my garage?
I bought my car, a 2016 Jaguar XE, in July 2023. Unfortunately, it has not been fit for purpose and has spent more time in the garage than on the road. I am outlining all the times it’s been back in the garage in the last year:
31 August 2023: car went back to them for a week over NOX sensor issue.
5/6 of September 2023: car went in for oil issue got car back around 20th of Oct.
18th of Dec: went back to garage over engine and dying didn’t get back until 29th of April. A new six-month warranty was given to me.
Car went back to garage in August this year for air conditioning and EGR issue for about a month.
Car went back to garage on October 25 for DPF issue apparently and returned on 7th of November but not fixed.
Under the Consumer Act am I eligible for a refund or have I a good case legally?
Paul OConnor (Carlow)Nov 2024 Filed under: warranty
Expert answer
Hi Paul,
That sounds like a nightmare.
We're motoring experts, not legal, though I suspect it would be challenging to make a legal argument for a full refund this long after you first bought the car, a vehicle that was already seven years old - especially as it appears that you accepted a warranty extension and the returned car on several occasions.
I also suspect you’d have a stronger case if it was the same issue being dealt with for the past year and a half, but it’s a long list of seemingly unrelated problems.
Nonetheless, I’d urge you to get in touch with the good people at the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) before you make any decisions. And as in all such disputes, I’d encourage you to talk to the garage first and foremost, telling them you are going to investigate the legal options open to you, but is there anything they can do to fix the situation before you do.
Please do let us know how you get on so we can use that information to advise others.
How long is the Hyundai Inster inside?
Hello,
Can you tell me the internal length from front dash to boot door (passenger side) on the upcoming Hyundai Inster EV please? I understand all the seats have a ‘fold flat’ option for cargo and I need to be able to carry a load approx 165cm x 40 x 40.
Thanks very much.

Hi Jane,
Good news, it looks like that should fit in. I didn't have a tape measure with me when driving the car, but I used the measure function of an iPhone and the distance came in at a little more than two metres, so even if that's not very accurate, you should have plenty to spare.
And yes, the seat backs all fold down flat. Works well.
My car's engine failed. What do I do?
Hi,
I bought a 2012 Peugeot 3008 automatic nine days ago from a mechanic who told me he was selling the car for his friend who I have never met. I paid the mechanic in cash and two days ago the engine broke and cannot be repaired. I need a whole new engine. The mechanic is saying it’s nothing to do with him. I am devastated.

Expert answer
Hi Alisa,
That is a terrible situaton and I'm not sure if you can do anything. If you buy a used car from a private individual then there is usually no warranty and though you never met the actual seller, it sounds as if you were aware it was a private sale and there was no mention of warranty.
If you have other information that you have not disclosed to us, perhaps contact the CPCC (Competition and Consumer Protection Commission) and talk through the situation to see if there is anything more you can do.
Renault Clio or Toyota Auris?
Hi,
I am looking at purchasing either a 2015 Renault Clio 1.5 diesel with 88,000km on the clock or a 2013 Toyota Auris diesel with 196,000km on the clock for €8,500. I used to drive a Peugeot 207 and currently renting a Clio until I buy a new car.
I drive a lot for work and need a good seat (neck issues) and something that is economical on fuel. I'd really appreciate your advice on which is the better car in the long run. My budget is €9,000, which I know is low for a decent car.
Ciara Conway (Galway)Nov 2024 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Ciara,
In general, larger cars come with better seats, and the Auris is in a class above the Clio in size terms so that would normally hold true. However, there's two years between these cars and over 100,000km, to the benefit of the Clio, and that really goes against the Toyota as its seats (and everything else of course) will have been through a lot more use. On top of that, the Clio is one of the bigger and more substantial cars in its sector.
In this case, and without knowing anything about the condition or service history of both (just as important as mileage and year), I'd suggest the Clio would be a better bet for you. Both are similarly economical.
A quick look on Carzone.ie for a diesel hatchback for under €9,000 reveals plenty of good alternatives to the above, including the Nissan Note and Pulsar and Honda Civic. There are loads of others with higher mileages on the clock already. From what I've seen, the Honda Civic seems like a really good option.
