I live in Co Laois; can I buy a new car and register it with a Tipperary plate?

What format would my historic vehicle (1977) get if I register it in Ireland now? I have heard it would have the modern style (if not a ZV) i.e 77 DL (for Donegal) followed by a number. Can you confirm this and what would the number be?

Can you change a car reg in Ireland? E.g. from say a Cork to Dublin reg?

Why does Revenue charge €1,000 for a number plate reservation? This “service” seems to benefit premium luxury vehicles but appears expensive when buying a new economy model. Initially from the foundation of the State it was free as the dealer could register the car but from the 1990s Revenue was charging €350. This service was also available for imported vehicles but ceased in 2015 without explanation. Driving licences and the NCT cost only a fraction in comparison.

My new A3 car arrives in Dublin middle of next week. I asked the dealer to please register the car from February 1st as January is almost gone. The dealer said he had no control over this. He stated that at the time of order they place all your details on the system and as soon as it lands at the dealership it is Audi's process to automatically register the car and pay VRT, VAT etc.

Please let me know if this is the situation.

Why do some cars have German car tax on their plates as well as having Irish car tax disks at the same time?

I've been looking at second cars online recently and have been frustrated by the number of ads where the car reg has been obscured or hidden. Why are sellers doing this? Is it a bad sign that there is something to hide, surely not for long as you can ask for the reg over the phone or you'll see the reg once you view the car?
