Will Ireland ever get personalised plates?

Will we ever see personalised registration plates becoming available in this country? And please don't tell me they're the sole preserve of the well to do because you can buy a personalised number plate in the UK for as little as three to four hundred pounds, which includes admin.

Hi Tom,

Slightly yes, but mostly no. I don't think it's likely that anyone has an appetite for a full-scale change of the number plate system (not least the Gardaí upon whom it places considerable stress). You can of course currently reserve specific numbers for your number plate, at a not-massive cost, so you could always have your birthday on your plate...
