I'm importing a Suzuki Jimny from Japan...
If I import a Suzuki Jimny XC from Japan will it need an IVA?
Michele Durban (Uk)Feb 2025 Filed under: importing
Expert answer
Hi Michelle,
The IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) is a UK-specific thing and it does not apply to cars brought into Ireland. In any case, the Jimny was sold in the UK and Ireland so there’s nothing unusual with it.
My cost to change to a Yaris Cross is huge!
I have used Carzone for independent valuations on my own car and on second hand cars which I am considering purchasing. My 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid was valued at €21,500 and a 2023 Yaris Cross at €24,000. When I asked the dealer however the cost of upgrading was €10,300. I was left speechless!
Where do I go from here?

Expert answer
Hi Pat,
I can imagine that was a bit of a shock, but I’m sure Carzone has disclaimers on its site warning users that its automated valuations are to be taken as a guide only. Looking through its own listings I can see 2021 Corollas from as low as €18,000 and examples of the 2023 Yaris Cross priced as high €35,000.
Even so, a dealer won’t offer you a price for your Corolla that they will sell it at as they must prepare the car for sale, offer a warranty and still make a profit.
And it’s also worth bearing in mind that each and every transaction is different. On any given day, any given dealer may or may not want your trade in as, for example, they already have plenty of 2021 Corollas in stock. Or they have had lots of calls about the Yaris Cross and know they can go for a high price.
I can only suggest you shop around to get the best deal for yourself.
Is a Volvo XC60 PHEV a good fit for me?
Hi,
I am looking at purchasing a Volvo XC60 PHEV T6, a 2022/2023 model, with approx. pure electric range of 70km. My daily commute is from Cork city to Ringaskiddy (20km) three days per week, whereby I don’t get much over 60km/h most of the journey, then Cork city to Bantry (80km) twice a week, which is relatively standard driving, some overtaking when possible.
Does this car make any sense for what I need, given the variance in journeys? Also does the hybrid behave differently when driving the Bantry journey, or will the range be eaten up straight away?
Simeon (Cork)Feb 2025 Filed under: hybrid
Expert answer
Hi Simeon,
I think a plug-in hybrid such as this could work well for you, though best to go into the purchase realising that the car is likely to go no further than 40-50km on electric power most of the time. Nonetheless, if you can charge it up at home on cheap night-rate electricity then it should cost you very little to run. You’d likely do the Cork to Ringaskiddy and back trip barely using the engine.
By default, the car will use the electric motor and ability as much as possible, so on longer runs the drive battery charge will be quickly used up and the engine will be on most of the time from then on. It can affect responsiveness a little.
The Volvo has a setting you can activate to hold the battery charge, or top it up, using the engine as a generator while it drives along. This is useful if you want to have battery charge for later in the journey to allow for electric-only driving, but it isn’t any more efficient as it uses more fuel from the tank to do this.
If you can charge up at home or work, I’d suggest you’re a perfect candidate for an electric car. A vast majority of them could manage the Cork to Bantry return journey without needing to be charged up.
Why are Irish Kia EV3 specs different to the UK's?
Have you any idea why the Kia EV3 top range GT Line-S is not available here or why the (no additional €600 cost) Sunset Orange colour is not offered to Irish customers?
Ed Kearney (Wexford)Feb 2025 Filed under: choosing new car
Expert answer
Hi Ed,
We put your question to Kia Ireland and it pointed out that it has no association with Kia UK - where the GT-line S is a regular trim level - and it decides its own trims lines and paint colours based on demand from Irish buyers.
Belt or chain in a 2007 Audi A3 2.0 TFSI?
Hello,
I’m thinking of buying a 2007 Audi A3 Sportback 2.0 TFSI quattro model. Has it a timing belt or a timing chain?
Martin (Ystad)Feb 2025 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Martin,
There were several different versions of that engine in production that year, oddly, some with timing belts, some with timing chains. We’d need the engine code to be able to answer properly I’m afraid.
Newer BMW 520d or older with lower mileage?
Should I purchase a 2013 BMW 520d with the ‘N47’ engine with 115,000 miles on the clock or a 2014 520d with 147,000 miles but the newer ‘B47’ engine?
Paul OConnor (Carlow)Feb 2025 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Paul,
You need to make the call yourself, obviously, but I’d be inclined to suggest the newer engine is a better bet as it has been more reliable than the N47 with its well-documented timing-chain issues and high cost of repair. However, that decision would come down to the service history on the newer car with the higher mileage. If the service history is incomplete then stay away from it.
VRT on importing a 2013 BMW 530d?
What would be VRT on a Northern Ireland BMW 530d? Nov 2013 is the year of the car.
Paul OConnor (Carlow)Feb 2025 Filed under: VRT
Expert answer
Hi Paul,
We need two things to estimate the VRT (and please note that we can only provide an estimate, and you need to take all factors into account for yourself). First is the CO2 emissions rating to determine the VRT band. That will vary from model to model, even for a single variant such as the 530d.
Our data shows that car has an NEDC CO2 rating of around 139g/km, but Revenue will ‘uplift’ that using its formula in a bid to make it comparable to WLTP-rated cars. That means it considers it to have CO2 emissions of about 172g/km on importation.
This means Band 19 for VRT at 35 per cent.
That’s 35 per cent of the OMSP, the Open Market Selling Price as determined by Revenue, which is not always very easy to guess at, but a quick look at Irish classifieds suggests in and around €18,000, meaning VRT of €6,300.
Don’t forget you’ll be liable for the NOx levy as well, which will be high for that car.
Will an imported Toyota RAV4 rust?
We are buying a Toyota RAV4 - it's a 21-plate English car; will there be an issue with rust in the next three years?
Henry Maguire (Ireland )Feb 2025 Filed under: importing
Expert answer
Hi Henry,
In general, modern Toyotas have no major issues with rust, but the fact that it’s coming from England means you really should have the underside inspected before buying it. That’s because roads in England are salted during the winter - especially in the north of the country - and that can have a detrimental effect on a car’s under-carriage etc.
Can Irish buyers get car finance in the UK?
We are Irish residents and want to buy a car from the UK. Do UK companies provide finance for those living in Ireland?
Joanne (Ireland )Feb 2025 Filed under: finance
Expert answer
Hi Joanne,
No, we don’t think that would be possible unless you have a place of residence in the UK as well as here that the transaction could be done through. Also, it’s likely to violate the terms of any car finance agreement to take it out of the country and register it in another one - which you would have to do to use the car in Ireland.
Can I get VRT exemption on two vehicles from the UK?
Hello,
I’m moving from the UK to Ireland, and I have a car and a van in my name. Can I bring both back and be exempt from any charges? I am finding it hard to find information on bringing back more than one vehicle. Will I only be exempt for one?
Michael (London )Feb 2025 Filed under: importing
Expert answer
Hi Michael,
When relocating to Ireland from the UK, you may be eligible for an exemption from Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) under the Transfer of Residence (TOR) relief, provided certain conditions are met. However, the guidelines primarily address the importation of a single vehicle, and information regarding exemptions for multiple vehicles is lacking.
I can only suggest you attempt to send a query to Revenue on this before you bring the vehicles in.
