Has the Audi A6 lights improved?

Do facelifted Audi A6 'C5' models still have as weak headlights as the early C5 versions?

Cormac Power (Dublin)

Expert answer

Hi Cormac,

Interesting one this. To be frank, it was news to us. We don't have a standardised headlight test on CompleteCar.ie (perhaps we should), but a trawl of the Audi-based internet forums does indeed seem to show that many C5 owners do have doubts about the power of their lights, especially on dipped beam.

While we can't find any definitive evidence that the facelifted model is any better, it seems that there are two potential fixes to the problem. One is to replace the standard bulbs with better models - and we've seen German-made Flosser bulbs recommended. Philips also produces a line of higher-output bulbs that may be worth a look. The other issue may be the state of the headlamp lenses, and any problems there can potentially be fixed by a good clean. Cleaning kits are available from most good motor factors. Incidentally, beware an aftermarket upgrade to a HID or Xenon headlight set. If it doesn't conform exactly to the original equipment specification, then there are doubts over the legality of such units and it could potentially lead to an NCT failure.

Will a newer bumper fit my Corsa?

Will a rear bumper from a 2008 Opel Corsa fit my 2007 Opel Corsa five-door automatic?

Thank you

Hi Jackie,

Yes, it is highly likely that a 2008 bumper would fit your 2007 Corsa. The gearbox has no bearing on it, but if the 2008 donor is from a three-door model it's worth comparing them as closely as possible.

What do you think about the Volkswagen Bora?

Hi, just want to know what ye think about a Volkswagen Bora 1.9 TDI: is it good on diesel or would I be better off to stick with the 1.4 petrol version? Only enquiring about buying one at the moment and would be looking from between 2000 to 2004 models.

Hi David,

Cracking car the Bora, solidly built and distinct enough from the Golf to not have the hatchback-with-a-boot-stuck-on-the-back stigma. Definitely go for the 1.9 TDI, as it's a far better performer in all regards than the rather weedy 1.4 petrol. Just make sure the injectors and the air pressure sensor (well known weak points on the old 1.9 'Pump Duse' engine) are in good nick.

Expert answer

Hi Kevin,

Not great I'm afraid. The current Espace, which dates back to 2003, is based on the same platform as the second generation Laguna and suffers the same problems. So expect lots of electrical issues (not great on a car with an all-digital dashboard) and the electric windows are especially fragile. Front tyre wear is also an issue, and we've heard reports of collapsing front suspension and a tendency for the exhaust system to give problems, especially with the catalytic convertor.

How reliable is the Nissan Qashqai? I'm looking at a 2.0 CVT Auto Tekna version from 2009.

Hi Glen,

Qashqais are pretty well built, as are all Nissans, by and large. Just watch for soggy rear suspension (the dampers and bushes can wear out fast sometimes) and signs of abuse or neglect (they are designed for families after all) in the cabin.

What do you think of the BMW 3 Series GT?

Can you give me your comments and opinions on the BMW 3 Series GT diesel automatic?

Expert answer

Hi Patrick,

I've just recently driven the BMW 318d GT with an automatic gearbox in Irish specification (Luxury to be exact) on Irish roads and it's a fabulously comfortable car. It feels (and is) hugely spacious inside and in the boot too. Surprisingly, it's quite different to drive and in character to both the 3 Series saloon and Touring estate. It's even more comfortable on the road and more refined. However, if you're coming from one of those cars and you like how they drive you may not appreciate the reduced 'sharpness' in the dynamics. Most people won't care though and they'll relish the comfort.

The 318d engine seems to cope well enough with the car's weight and the eight-speed automatic transmission is a gem.

Which version are you considering?

What's the fuel economy figure for Dacia's Duster?

How many miles per gallon of diesel will the Dacia Duster return?

John Mc Cafferty (Enniscorthy Co Wexford Irelland)

Expert answer

Hi John,

The front-wheel drive Dacia Duster powered by the 1.5-litre dCi diesel engine returns 56.5mpg (5.0 litres/100km) on the combined cycle. The four-wheel drive version is a little more thirsty at 53.3mpg (5.3 litres/100km). Naturally most people don't achieve these official figures, but it's a good benchmark figure.

How reliable is the 2004 Renault Clio?

How reliable is the 2004 Renault Clio?

Mark Nolan (Dublin )

Expert answer

Hi Mark,

The most common fault with that generation Clio was with the bonnet catch that could fail and allow the bonnet to fly open when driving! Worrying that, and it never triggered a full recall, although Renault did offer to inspect and repair cars for free - make sure the one you're looking at has had that done. Engines are pretty solid, but watch for electrical issues with the windows, the CD player and the engine immobiliser. There are reports of cold starting problems, usually because of a faulty air pressure sensor and the cable-operated gear shift can give problems too. If you have difficulty selecting a gear, then the gearbox is on its way out. Cabin trim is pretty fragile and you need to watch for problems with the brake servos and front suspension arms.

Expert answer

Hi Jo,

Nope, apparently not. It seems to be a typical Honda - as reliable and solid as the day is long. Two things to look for: watch for excessive engine wear and tear from owners thrashing it hard to compensate for relatively slow performance (any blue smoke from the exhaust is a worrying sign) and keep an eye on the cabin trim as some of it's a bit cheap and fragile.
