What diesel car will I trade in my Mazda3 for?

I'd like to trade in my 2007 Mazda3 1.6 petrol and change to a diesel engine. Fuel economy and lower tax would be important as I cover around 360 miles a week mostly motorway driving. I'd like a roomier car in the back for two children and a bigger boot. Was thinking of a diesel car or SUV. What would my Mazda3 be worth on trade-in?

Hi Alanna,

Anything pre-2008 with a petrol engine is pretty hard to shift on these days, sadly, so I'd reckon you're looking at a value of possibly as little as €5,500 for the Mazda3 at the moment. To get the best from it, I'd suggest staying within the Mazda family (a Mazda dealer will usually give you a better trade-in on a Mazda than will another dealer) and trade up to a Mazda6 Estate. Loads of space, brilliant to drive, reliable and, with the 2.2-litre 129hp diesel, very economical too. SUV? Do you live up a mountain or at the far end of a rutted dirt road? No? Then you don't need one - stick to the family car market and the Mazda6 size class (which also includes cars like the Toyota Avensis, Ford Mondeo, Volkswagen Passat and Opel Insignia) is  where you'll get the best bang for your buck.

Which of these E-Class Mercs do I go for?

Hi guys, if you had a choice of a 2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E 220 CDI automatic Avantgarde with 37,000 miles on the clock or the same model from 2010 with 87,000 miles on the clock for same money which would you choose? I could probably get a 2009 BMW 520d manual for the same money...

Hi Jim,

Well, the rule is never buy on mileage or even age, but only on condition and history. If the higher mileage car has been better cared for, and has a fully-stamped up service history, then it could well be just as good as the older but lower mileage one. Basically, take both for a thorough test drive and see which one 'feels younger.' If one has had a hard life, and the other an easy one, it should be pretty apparent which is the better purchase. 

Same goes for the 5 Series, but try not to get the less desirable manual. You may pay more for an auto now but it will be worth it come resale time.

Where does the 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine in the Mitsubishi Spacestar originate from? Are test drives of it?

Hi Paddy,

Yes, it’s the 3A90 engine in both 1.0- and 1.2-litre (that’s the 3A92 one) forms and it is Mitsubishi’s own design. There is some relation to the old-shape Smart ForTwo’s three-cylinder engine, as originally it was a joint design between Smart, Mercedes-Benz and Mitsubishi, but these days only Mitsubishi builds and uses it. We haven’t done a full road test on this model yet, but it’s pretty middling. Cheap and cheerful, but well behind the sophistication curve compared to rivals such as the Hyundai i10 and Volkswagen up!. Here's our review of the 1.2-litre Mitsubishi Spacestar.


Will I buy a Toyota Prius?

Hi, I'm interested in a Toyota Prius T3 Hybrid 1.5 , from 2008, 41k mileage, one owner, selling for €8,950. Is that ok to buy? Thanks!

Hi John,

Yes, but with one small caveat. The Prius has always been one of Toyota's best, and indeed best-built cars. It's essentially a flagship model, particularly for Toyota's eco-friendly ambitions. There have been a few recalls (for malfunctioning brake lights, airbags, steering and brake issues, as well as the infamous sticky-throttle-pedal one), but generally Prius are solidly reliable and there have thus far been no reports of fading or failing battery performance. We've heard one or two reports of rust breaking out, but they're probably most likely down to unattended panel damage exposing bare metal.

The caveat? It depends how and where you drive as to whether or not it's worth buying a Prius. Yes, you'll get cheap road tax, but to get even vaguely close to Toyota's quoted 65mpg fuel economy figures, you're going to have to drive with the reticence of a trappist monk. Get anywhere in the neighbourhood of enthusiastic driving and you're going to see the fuel economy plummet, ditto for undertaking any long motorway journeys. But, if you spend most of your time in town, where the Prius' electric motor and stop-start systems can best bring their armament to bear, then the economy should pick up, and you'll have one of the most comfortable, reliable and relaxing cars in which to hustle your way through city traffic.


Anything to worry about in the Peugeot 207 CC?

Are there any problems with the 2007 Peugeot 207 CC cabriolet 1.6 diesel? Any reason there are so few in Ireland?

Hi Eamonn,

Well, have you seen the weather? That's one good reason...

There was always one major problem with the 207 CC and that was its roof. Better looking and more neatly integrated into the design than that of the preceding 206 CC it may have been, but it's heavy, complicated and was prone to failure on early models, often becoming stuck in the half open, half closed position. Apparently that early foible has been sorted since by various fixes, but it's still a worry for any 207 CC owner.

Apart from that, it's also not very practical (the rear seats are next to useless and the boot is very small when the roof is folded away) and it was never exactly affordable, so perhaps all of that explains its relative rarity in Ireland. On the upside, it's quite nice to drive, it's comfy and reasonably mechanically robust, and for the sake of a relatively small outlay, you do get the same type of folding steel roof that Mercedes-Benz and BMW buyers get to boast of.


Will I need to pay VAT importing this Northern Ireland car?

Hi, just need some advice.

Thinking of purchasing a car from a Northern Irish dealer. The dealer classifies the car as used. It is a 2012 saloon with 3,830 miles (6,136 kilometres) on it and was registered in May 2012. On asking the history of the car as it has so low mileage, the dealer said the car was a UK car registered and used by the car manufacturer at their plant for use by its employees. VRT is payable but I'm assuming VAT is not payable as it's greater than six months old and is just over 6,000km. Just wanted opinions on whether VAT may be payable?

Hi Ken,

OK, having combed the Revenue information booklets, as far as we can tell, the age of the vehicle in question means that it is not liable for VAT, but will, of course, be liable for VRT. It wouldn't hurt to double check with your local tax office to confirm this, though. Revenue tend to actually be very helpful with such inquiries, just be up front with them.

Will my mechanic be able to inspect a car on a driveway?

Im looking to buy a used car and I will be hiring a mechanic to come with me to look at it. My question is, will a mechanic be able to check over the car properly (underneath) at the location of the car (owner's driveway)? Thanks

Hi Colin,

Clearly it would be much easier for the mechanic to do a thorough check if the car was on a proper ramp, but try to get permission from the owner to at least jack up each corner of the car in turn so the wheels/suspension can be inspected. At the end of the day, it's up to the mechanic and how happy he is with the situation.

Which new cars are easy to get into?

I have a bad back and I find it very difficult getting into small cars like the Volkswagen Polo/Golf etc. I am looking to buy a new car/SUV that will be doing mostly urban/extra urban driving. I know it's a tough ask, but I am looking for something that is easy to get into and that will return decent mpg.

Not that tough, these days actually. Would you consider an Opel Mokka? Not the greatest car ever made or anything but it has a higher seating position, which may help and, better still, its front seats are approved of by the Aktion Gesunder Rucken, which is the German Bad Back Association. If you don’t fancy the Mokka, I too am a bad back sufferer and I always found that the seats in the Citroen C3 Picasso were always very comfy. Worth a try at any rate.

I'd say you're looking at a probable value of between €5,000 and €7,000 with that kind of mileage. Trading in probably the better route, unless it's a diesel you're selling. Private buyers just don't seem to want to know about petrol cars at the moment.

Hi Mim,

By and large, yes. The 1.6 FSI engine was actually pretty peachy to drive, if rather underpowered. As with all underpowered cars, watch carefully for signs of abuse and hard-running by drivers frustrated with the lack of oomph. 

It seems to be a very solidly reliable car, but there are some reports in owner forums of problems with the cam belt tensioner repeatedly failing and needing to be replaced at almost every major service, while there are also some reports that the direct fuel injection system means that the inlet valves can become sticky with carbon deposits. That seems to be about it, though.
