Are the older Chrysler Voyagers reliable?
How reliable are the Chrysler Grand Voyager diesels, especially the older models i.e. 2001 or 2002?
Thomas Fox (Kilcolgan ,galway)May 2013 Filed under: reliability
Expert answer
Hi Thomas,
It seems to be a bit all or nothing with the Voyager and reliability. Some owners skate through life with nary a problem, others have no end of hassle. The primary issues seem to be electrical, including wiper motors, ignition systems, fuel pump controls and electric tailgates and sliding doors. The interior is also pretty fragile in places, and items such as interior lights and instrument lighting can give trouble, as can the radio systems.
How reliable is the Suzuki Jimny?
How reliable is the Suzuki Jimny?
Liam Roche (Waterford)May 2013 Filed under: reliability
Expert answer
Hi Liam.
Suzuki knows how to build a solidly reliable car (indeed the old Baleno saloon holds a decent claim to being the world's only truly indestructible car) and the Jimny is no different. It's also been in production since 1998, so all the bugs should have been worked out by now. The only weak point seems to be minor electrical grumbles, and apparently the passenger electric window motor and switch are both on the fragile side. Other than that, just watch out for Jimnys that have had a hard life off-roading or as farm hack-abouts.
What changed about the Honda CR-V in 2002?
Re Honda CR-V 2000 - 2003: was there a model upgrade in that period? Anything I should look out for?
Dan Devane (Tralee)May 2013 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Dan,
Indeed so. In fact, the CR-V changed utterly in 2002 with the introduction of an all-new model - and the first diesel version was introduced in 2003. Despite it looking rather similar to the first generation model (which debuted in 1995) the second-gen CR-V is bigger, heavier, more spacious and more sophisticated, even if it did retain the old-style spare wheel mounting on the tailgate.
Early 2.2 CDTi diesel models have an odd fault - the oil warning light can come on even with a full sump of the black stuff. It seems to be a software issue. Listen for groaning or moaning from the rear differential for the four-wheel drive system (all second-gen CR-Vs were had four-wheel drive) as that can mean that the oil in the diff has degraded and the unit is starting to fail.
Other than that, they're solidly built and heartily recommended.
What problems are there on the Ford Galaxy?
What are the problems with the 2007 Ford Galaxy and how reliable are they?
Alan Brauner (Wexford)May 2013 Filed under: reliability
Expert answer
Hi Alan,
Quite a few niggling faults really, although it's worth pointing out that the Galaxy shares all its mechanical bits with the generally-very-reliable Ford Mondeo. The main issues seem to revolve around electrical faults, which can affect the wipers, windows, lights and the anti-lock brake (ABS) system. Check carefully to make sure all are working and don't ignore a warning light. Then there's the interior trim, which many owners describe as fragile and some have even reported cabin parts coming off in their hands!
Help me choose an economical second commuting car.
What city car has the best fuel consumption from 1990? I'm looking to buy a second commuting car so will be buying a cheap used model.
Saz Wolv (Dublin)Expert answer
Hi Saz,
If you're buying something that old, a lot of the potential fuel consumption is going to be down to the condition of the car and how badly worn the engine is. On that basis, I'd suggest you hunt around for a late nineties, early 2000s Suzuki Alto 1.0. They're as close to indestructible as any car can get to and the dinky little 1.0-litre engine should return mid-forties MPG, even around town. Again though, if you're looking to maximise economy, make sure it's serviced, make sure it gets a good high-grade engine oil and some decent tyres. There's nothing like good maintenance for driving your fuel bills down.
Let us know how you get on
How reliable are Chevrolet Lacettis?
How reliable are Chevrolet Lacettis? Or Kalos, or just Chevrolets in general please? Torn between those and a Nissan Almera/Mitsubishi Lancer, but want the most reliable. All advice welcomed. Thanks
Patrick Sweeney (Dublin)May 2013 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Patrick,
Generally Chevriolet Lacettis (and Chevrolets in general) are pretty solidly built, but they're a long, long way from being the most inspiring car around. Essentially, they're cheap, cheerless but solid transport, just as they were when they were still badged as Daewoos.
As for choosing between an Almera and a Lancer, we'd go for the Almera simply because it has a (slightly) nicer interior and is (slightly) nicer to drive.
Hope that helps
What do you think of the BMW X6?
What do you think about the 3.0-litre BMW X6 my mother just bought when she got divorced? I like it!
Michael Harper (Cork)May 2013 Filed under: choosing new car
Expert answer
Hi Michael,
The BMW X6 really does split opinion with its SUV-that-wants-to-be-a-coupé styling. It's less practical than the BMW X5 it's based on too. However, it's well made, exceptional to drive and fast. That 3.0-litre diesel engine is a gem too, being both frugal and powerful. I'd personally prefer an X5, but each to their own!
Saab 9-3, VW Jetta or Skoda Octavia?
What would you say is the most reliable from the following: 2009/2010 Saab 1.9 diesel 9-3, VW Jetta or Skoda Octavia?
I'm looking for a car that will not develop electronic/electrical problems that will disable the car or turn on warning lights that require special equipment to turn off, if such a car exists these days!
Thanks

Hi Tony,
No, no such car exists. They all, when a problem occurs, need a trip to a diagnostic rig. Of the three you’ve mentioned though, the Octavia is by far the best, and yes even better than the Jetta with which it shares its mechanical bits and pieces.
What to look for on Ford Focus van?
What should I check for when buying a 2007 1.6 Ford Focus van?
Pat O Brien (Ennis)May 2013 Filed under: commercial vehicle
Expert answer
Hi Pat,
The biggest issue is actually rust — Focuses from that era were often not properly undersealed at the factory, so rot can set in pretty easily. Make sure you give it a very thorough going over. Beyond that, with a ten-year-old car, it comes down to the condition and service history. If it has a nice, fat, service book still of stamps, then given that it was always a fairly mechanically robust car, you should be fine.
Any known BMW M3 gearbox issues?
Are there any known problems with the BMW M3 gearboxes (2002-2006)?
Paul Kernaghan (Monaghan)May 2013 Filed under: gearbox
Expert answer
Hi Paul,
The manual gearbox on the E46-generation M3 is fine, as long as it’s not been abused and the car in general has been properly looked after. The SMG on the other hand is a nightmare of potential problems. Quite aside from being awkward and jerky to use even when it’s in perfect health, it develops frequent problems with the hydraulic pumps, solenoids and electrical relays. Avoid the SMG at all costs.
