What precautions should I take when buying privately?
Hi, I have found a second hand car that I really like; however it is from a private individual, not a garage. What checks should I do to make sure this car is what the seller says it is? I'm concerned about buying a stolen car, or a car that still has finance on it, will a Cartell.ie check tell me if that is the case? Other than that, and having an idependent mechanic check the car, is there anything else I should do?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Dawn,
Yes, getting it checked by Cartell.ie should flag up whether there is anything dodgy in the car's history. Have a look through the service book too and maybe have a ring around the various garages where the car has been looked after. If the car was regularly serviced and/or they know the owners, that should be a good sign.
If you're still concerned, get the AA to inspect it for you. They go through second hand cars with a fine tooth comb and will flag up any potential issues.
Is the Audi A6 allroad quattro due an update?
When was the current model of the Audi A6 allroad quattro introduced and is there any update due?
Thanks

Hi Philip,
The current A6 allroad quattro was actually only introduced last year (2012) so there won't be any major updates for a while yet. The previous generations ran from 1999 to 2006 and 2006 to 2012.
I'm looking for a reliable, fuel efficent diesel car.
Hi, I have €16,000 and a 2007 Nissan Almera to trade in. I'm looking for a reliable, fuel efficent diesel; can you recommend some?

Hi Paddy,
Well, with that kind of budget to shop with you're well into the price range for most compact 1.6 diesel hatchbacks, and I'm talking new (or nearly new if you're looking to maximise the bargain).
So I'd recommend going for one of Volkswagen's new trio of compact cars, the Golf, Octavia or Leon (sadly the Audi A3 is probably out of your price range). All three are excellent, solidly build and share the same frugal 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine. Of the three, I'd suggest going for the Leon as it gets you the best all round car, but the classiness of the Golf or the practicality of the Octavia are equally strong draws. Can't go wrong with any of them really.
Does the older BMW 3 Series have an oil leak issue?
Hi,
I am looking at buying a 2007 BMW 320i Coupé (Manual) or a 2007 BMW 320i SE Coupé (Automatic). Both have 44,000 miles on the clock. My old car, a 2002 BMW 318Ci eventually gave up due to the engine leaking oil constantly. A mechanic friend of mine has advised against buying another 3 Series as he says this oil problem is an ongoing fault with the model. I would be interested in knowing if such is the case?
Thanks,
Denis, Dublin

Expert answer
Hi Denis,
Yes, it seems to be a recurring problem on the 320i, but it may not be as serious as you think. If the source of the leak is the crank-case ventilator (CCV) then it can be a bit pricey to get fixed, and it's most definitely not a DIY job, as bits of the engine have to be removed and the whole assembly tilted to allow access.
If though, the leak is coming from the vacuum pump then it's most likely simply a failed o-ring seal on the pump, which can be relatively easily replaced. The obvious signs of a leak are a smell of burning oil in the cabin at tickover and, of course, visible oil leaks within the engine bay. A quick steam-clean of the engine will show up easily where any leaks are coming from.
Of course, if you've not comfortable tackling this sort of thing yourself make sure you bring the car to a professional.
Common faults with the Audi A6 estate?
What are the common faults with the 2009 Audi A6 Avant estate?

Hi Heino,
Check for vibration from the dual-mass flywheel on the 2.0-litre engines, and that the drain at the bottom of the windscreen has not become clogged with road debris and leaves. If it’s the 2.0-litre TDI and it’s smoking a lot, then the turbo is probably gone or about to go, and that engine needs a cam belt change at 120,000km.
Check the rear brake discs for excessive wear or scoring marks too — the electronic handbrake can stick on and damage the disc. Check everything electrical carefully in general for a car of that age, and don’t buy without a full and complete service history.
I need a six-seat car with room for a wheelchair...
I'm looking to upgrade my car. I need something to hold six people comfortably and to be fuel efficient, as I do 25,000km a year. I also need it to have boot space with all seats up as I need to fit hoist and collapsible wheelchair... I won't be carrying six all the time but need it to suit and be safe... All suggestions welcome.

Hi Sarah,
Tricky one this. It's very, very hard to find an MPV of any size that can take lots of people and their cargo at the same time.
I think you might be best going for either a Fiat Multipla or a Honda FR-V. Their two-rows-of-three seating allows you to seat six (albeit the front centre passenger had better be someone small and/or young) and they still have usefully big boots behind.
Otherwise, you need to go up a size and maybe even think about a compact minibus. A Mercedes-Benz Viano or Volkswagen Caravelle perhaps. There's also the option of a Chrysler Grand Voyager, which has a bit more room than the standard model, but I'd suggest you try it with a full load of people and wheelchair before buying, just to make sure you'll all fit.
Hope that helps
What's the Kia Soul diesel like?
Does the Kia Soul TX 1.6 diesel have a decent reputation in diesel terms? Is it a good car for the money?
Dympna Brennan (Galway)Aug 2013 Filed under: choosing new car
Expert answer
Hi Dympna,
Not bad at all actually. The Soul has never been a particularly big seller in Ireland but underneath it's basically the same as a Kia cee'd so shares that car's mechanical solidity and its very good 1.6 diesel engine. It's a touch unrefined at times, and the interior quality is a little short of Kia's current standard but it's otherwise spacious, good to drive and very distinctively styled.
An all-new Soul will be launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in a couple of weeks so there may be an opportunity for some run-out deals on the current model.
How would you rate the 2003 MINI Cooper?
How would you rate the 2003 MINI Cooper? What are the watch-outs if buying one? What fuel comsumption can one expect from this car? Do they hold their value?
Brian Holmes (Dublin)Aug 2013 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Brian,
Generally I'm a bit of a MINI fan, and have actually bought one. Love it. A 2003 though is the first generation car, with the Chrysler-built engine, and you have to watch those for electrical issues and early MINI models had problems with leaking fuel tanks. They're pretty robust cars though, as long as you avoid ones that have been obviously abused. Don't forget that they may be small, but they are still made by BMW so make sure the service record and history is on the button. They do hold their value very well, but any 10 -year old car isn't going to have much value left to hold. Fuel consumption won't be great though. That 1.6 engine wasn't the most sophisticated thing, so expect high 30s, low 40s mpg on average.

How much should I pay for this Volkswagen Beetle?
What is a reasonable price to pay for a 2003 Volkswagen Beetle diesel with 110,000 miles on the clock?
Anna Kingston (Cork)Aug 2013 Filed under: used car values
Expert answer
Hi Anna,
There seems to be a shortage of Beetles out there, especially the diesel model, so that's keeping prices high. You could pay as much as €4,500 for a good one, maybe a bit less with some committed haggling. Perhaps a trip to the UK is in order, where there are a lot more Beetles to choose from?
