Ford Fiesta or Audi A3?

Which one to go for? A 2006 Audi A3 2.0 TDI or 2010 Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi,both of which cost €6,000.

Hi Irvin,

Well, it kind of depends what you want and what you need. These are two very different cars, so it's a little tricky to compare them directly. The Audi is stylish, comfy, refined and reasonably spacious, and of course comes pre-loaded with buckets of premium appeal. The Fiesta is, by contrast, rather more cheap and cheerful, but it's utterly brilliant to drive and, with that 1.4-litre diesel, should cost little more than buttons to run.

So, as I say, it depends what you need. Want space and premium appeal? Get the Audi. Want cheap running costs and a pin-sharp driving experience? Get the Fiesta.

If you had a choice which would you buy? A BMW M4 Coupé or the Jaguar F-Type Coupé?

Hi Brian,

This very match will be the subject of a twin test shorty in our iPad Mag so I don't want to give the game away too much!

Saying that, they're very different cars. Technically and logically the BMW M4 is dominant. It's considerably faster at all times too, yet the customisation of its driving systems that is open to the driver makes it suitable for everything from long distance cruising, to the school run and then the odd track day. It's an astounding car I'd personally love to own. It'd take years to learn it fully and if you like a challenge then it's the one for you. However, unlike the previous M3 Coupé, it's more docile at times, meaning the uninitiated aren't scared off by crazy twitchiness.

The Jaguar is much more laid back by default. Yes it's quick by any measure, and can make a sound all the more alluring than the BMW, but, in V6 or V6S guises at least, isn't quite as focused on hard-core driving. It drives very well, don't get me wrong, but the BMW would run rings around it on track.

Clearly that won't matter to many people and we suspect that this decision would be won by the heart. As I write this I'm torn. I adore the looks of the Jaguar and that may be enough to swing the decision, but in pure black and white terms, the M4 Coupé is a more accomplished car.

I have €10,000 to spend on an executive car.

I have a budget of €10,000 to get a car. I was thinking BMW 318/320, Honda Accord, Volvo S40 2.0 07/08 etc. What would be your preference and should I go petrol/diesel with less than 8,000 miles annually?

Hi Kieran,

With that kind of mileage, you could probably look at saving yourself a bit of money by going for a petrol model - as long as the price gap between it and a diesel covers the fuel cost. Get your calculator out...

Of the cars you've mentioned, we'd go for a 3 Series. Few cars are as good to drive and it's the kind of thing you should own once at least. Check it carefully for wear and tear though and don't buy anything without a full service history. 

The only catch could be trying to find one that ISN'T a diesel...


BMW 320d, Audi A5 Sportback or Mercedes C-Class?

2013 BMW 320d M Sport, Audi A5 Sportback S ine or Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG Sport? Want something that's well built. Am hearing differing stories about the quality of the BMW, DPF issues on the Audi 2.0 TDI, the Mercedes more expensive that either.

Hi Simon,

Generally speaking all three of these cars are really well built and shouldn't give you any major troubles. The BMW 2.0-litre diesel engine has some well documented and recurring issues with weakness in the turbo, but if you buy one on BMW's approved used programme, you'll get a two-year warranty that should cover you for any issues. The Diesel Particulate Filter issue on the Audi 2.0-litre TDI engine is usually related to drivers doing too low a mileage at too low a speed for the DPF to heat up sufficiently to clean itself - it's a recurring problem on any diesel car bought by someone who fundamentally doesn't understand how diesels work and are best driven.

I'd say of the three, my choice would be the last-gen C-Class. If you're looking at 2013, try and track down one of the last Edition C models - they were loaded with equipment and got an extra AMG body kit and nice wheels too. Superb to drive, cracking 2.1-litre diesel engine (if it touch noisy) and the only drawback is that they're not very spacious in the rear.

Of course, if it's reliability and reliability above all that concerns you, buy a Lexus IS 300h and you won't go wrong...

Hi Richard,

No, because the two cars are based on two different platforms. Although the engines are the same, the ancillary fittings and their attachment points will be very different.


How well are the likes of the Audi S cars and BMW M235i selling?

I am interested in something like an Audi S3 hatch/saloon, Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG,  Audi S1 or Audi S4; any clue on how many have been sold since 2013?

Hi Simon,

These cars are all verrrrrry thin on the ground. Mercedes-Benz Ireland doesn't officially designate its '45 AMG' sales as separate models so was unable to give us a figure, but Audi provided us with S3 and S4 numbers. In 2013, three S3s and four S4s were sold, while thus far in 2014, five S3s and one S1 have been sold. Across town at BMW, approximately half a dozen M235i Coupés have been sold this year.

Swapping my Passat for an Insignia - thoughts?

Hi what would I get for a Volkswagen Passat 2.0-litre FSI Comfortline with 109,000 kilometres on the clock in excellent condition and with a full service history - against an Opel insignia 2011/12 (is it a good car?). Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi Eddie,

The Insignia is a fine car but you'll find it's not as spacious as your old Passat. Still, it's arguably more handsome and sharper to drive, but you have to make sure all the electrical bits are working properly.

As for the value of your Passat, you haven't given me a specific year but I'm going to guess it's around 2006-2007 in which case you're looking at around €5,000 as a trade in, but don't be surprised if you get offered less - cars with big petrol engines (even efficient ones) are forecourt poison right now.

When did ISOFIX become standard fit?

In what year did ISOFIX become standard in European cars? Baby on the way and have been given a car seat that is ISOFIX compatible, but have a 2000 Toyota Yaris that does not have it fitted.

Hi David,

Sadly it was only quite recently that ISOFIX became a required fitting. According to the EU, "Under the current UN/ECE R14, all new vehicles produced since February 2013 are required to have ISOFIX lower anchorages and top tether attachments."  

Bonus trivia fact: ISOFIX was originally jointly developed by child seat maker Britax and Volkswagen. That probably doesn't help your search for a car that has it though. What I would suggest is to look up the website of the maker of the seat. Many seat makers (such as Maxi-Cosi, here: http://www.maxi-cosi.com/ie-en/service/car-fitting.aspx) provide a matching service to help you determine which cars your seat will fit in. 

Otherwise, get in touch with a seat expert such as Mothercare or Tony Kelly's who will be able to help you out.


Merc B-Class, MINI Countryman or Nissan Qashqai?

How do the following cars rank in terms of ground clearance (to behave safely on bumpy broken roads): Mercedes-Benz B-Class (old model), MINI One Diesel Countryman (current model) and Nissan Qashqai (current model)?

Hi Bruno,

Hands up, we cannot find ground clearance data for the first gen Mercedes-Benz B-Class, but it's a lower-slung car in general than either of the other two, and with that sandwich floor construction, we'd guess it would be quite low riding. Mind you, it's worth pointing out that ride height is not the be all and end all when it comes to tackling rough roads - suspension design, layout and stiffness have a major, potentially larger part to play.

Nonetheless, of the other two, it's the Nissan that has the slightly higher ride height, 188mm plays the MINI Countryman's 163mm. Given that we've nothing but praise for the new Qashqai's brilliant twin-chamber shock absorbers and silky-smooth suspension, we'd say it's probably the best bet for what you need.

Will my new petrol Audi A3 be worth less than a diesel one?

I've just bought a new Audi A3 Saloon 1.4 (petrol) as I do very low annual mileage and mainly urban driving. Will I still take a hit at trade-in time in the next three years or so, due to petrol engine rather than diesel?

Hi John,

To be honest, it's a little hard to tell. The A3 Saloon hasn't been out long enough for us to get a solid handle on its resale values but we can work from a couple of basic assumptions:

 1. Yes, diesel is currently more highly valued than petrol.

2. That won't always be the case - now that the mad post-2008 scramble for diesel has subsided buyers are starting to get wise to the value of petrol power again, helped by improved engine tech.

3. An Audi, any Audi, will likely have stronger residual values than most other marques so you're already ahead of the game.

So I guess the answer is yes, your depreciation will be a little sharper on petrol than on diesel but I suspect it won't be by very much. Fret not and just enjoy owning one of our favourite current cars.
