Does my Kia Sorento have suspension problems?

Hi, I recently bought a 2008 Kia Sorento (30k miles) privately and really like it. Everything has been great so far except for when I hit bumps in the road. The bang you get from going over bumps is quite hard and travels through your body. I did research on Sorentos before buying it but now going back I see there are suspension problems reported on Kias. Do you think if I replace the shocks it should ease the suspension problem and do you know if there is a type of shock that I should get a garage to install to try and dampen down the bang I get from bumps in the road?

Thanks Ciaran.

Hi Ciaran,

The Sorento is known for being robust and generally mechanically sound. However, its suspension was never the most comfortable. Your car is very low mileage so I would be surprised if anything in the suspension needs to be replaced as yet. One option would be to ask a mechanic to replace the dampers with high quality items. They'll cost more though.

Before you do that I'd urge you to try to get your hands on another example of the Sorento - from a dealer or something - to compare back-to-back with your own over the same bumpy road. Only then can you know if there's a problem.

Finally, check the tyre pressures as well and make sure they're within spec.

Hope that helps in some way.

How much is my VW Golf GTI worth?

How much is my 2007 Volkswagen Golf GTI 2.0 DSG five-door worth?

Hi David,

If you were trading in your GTi in a dealership you would probably get offered around €11,500 - €12,500 depending on the condition and mileage. You could ask about €13,500 - €15,000 as a private sale.

I hope this helps

What value on a high mileage Golf?

What is the valuation of a 1999 Volkswagen Golf TDI 90bhp. It has 310,000 miles on it.

Hi Martin,

If it works well then it is worth much more than selling it or trading it in is going to suggest. Any trader is likely to only offer you a token gesture of a few hundred Euro for a car with this sort of mileage, whereas if it drives well then you are much better off keeping it. It is also going to be difficult to sell privately.

Can you explain what 'VAT' qualifying means on importing a car from the UK?

I am considering buying a car in the UK. Can you clarify what 'VAT qualifying' means? Does this mean that I can get the UK VAT back but I have to pay Irish VAT and VRT? I realise VAT is payable on cars less than six months old.

Hi William,

Assuming we're talking about new cars or those that are less than six months old (and have less than 6,000km on the clock):

VAT qualifying cars are those that the UK vendor may sell on without charging for VAT to the following:

  • a customer in a country outside the EU
  • someone who isn't registered for VAT who will take a new car to another EU country
  • a VAT-registered business in the EU

In your case, yes, you'd still have to pay Irish VAT and VRT.

Some light official reading for you around this subject that may explain more:

Revenue.ie: New vehicles purchased by a private individual from a VAT-registered person, including a motor dealer, in another country

HM Revenue & Customs: Sending your motor vehicle to another EU country from the UK

HM Revenue & Customs: Motor dealers and VAT: selling new or used vehicles and extras

Hope that answers your question

I hope that helps!

How much is my Volkswagen Passat worth?

I have 2006 Volkswagen Passat petrol FSii ,chrome finished windows, excellent condition, 145,000km on the clock. I was wondering what would it be worth if I was to sell it?

Hi Melanie,

If you are selling it privately, you should ask about €7,200 for it. This should be what you advertise it for. If you are trading it in against another car, then you might get offered about €6,500 against a used car and perhaps as much as €7,000 if it against a new car.

I hope this helps!

Hi Collette,

Wow, that is low mileage! It must be like new is it? If you were selling the car privately, I would say that you should ask about €5,500 for the car and be prepared to take around €5,000 for it. As a trade-in against a new car you might get around €5,000 and against another used car I'd say between €4,000 - €4,500.

I hope this give you some idea.

If you did sell one privately, perhaps you could sell the Octavia and avail of the scrappage scheme (while there is time left) on the Almera. Come back to us if you need more help!

How much is my S-Max worth and should I keep it?

Hi guys,

I have a one-owner 2008 Ford S-Max 2.0 TDCi 140 Auto Titanium spec with 75,000km on the clock and wonder at approximate trade-in value? I see a wide variation in asking prices on the web. I am wondering if I should look to change it this year or next, or should hold on as it is a good car but don't want to be left with something worthless in a few years time.

Thanks,

Andrew

Expert answer

Hi Andrew,

That is quite an unusual spec S-Max that you have and as such it is reasonably difficult to price it because there are lots of basic spec 1.8-litre diesels around with manual transmissions. If you were selling that privately I think you would want around €18,500 for it though you'd probably get around €17,000-€17,500  if you traded it in.

Once that car starts to creep towards 100,000km the value will drop quite a lot, so bear that in mind. But the thing is, what would you be replacing it with anyway? I would probably think of upgrading to a newer one if you are in that frame of mind and can afford to do so, because it is probably at its most valuable now as the mileage is reasonable.

It is a lovely car though and it will be costly to get another at that spec. I guess you need to sit down with the calculator and figure out what you can afford. You might need about €14,000 along with your own to get into something similar in a demo model 2011 car.

I hope this helps!

What is the value of my 2005 Skoda Octavia?

What is the current value of a 2005 Skoda Octavia 1.6-litre petrol? There are 120,000 miles on the clock and it is in mint condition.

Expert answer

Hi Liam,

If you planning on selling it privately you should ask around €6,000 as your starting point leaving you room to negotiate. As a trade-in from a garage, you are likely to be offered around €4,000 - €5,000 at best, obviously depending on what you are trading in against.

I hope this helps!
