Tax and BIK on new Toyota Land Cruiser?
What is the tax and benefit in kind payable on the new Toyota Land Cruiser Commercial?
CIARAN CURRAN (ENNISTYMON)Feb 2014 Filed under: taxation
Expert answer
Hi Ciaran,
Benefit in kind is, unfortunately, not a fixed figure and depends as much on your personal circumstances as it does the particular car. Have a look on the Revenue website to learn more, but you’re going to need an accountant.
As for tax on the vehicle itself, the VRT payable is 13.3 per cent of the purchase price and, taxed as a commercial, it’s €333 a year, but if you’re using it for any sort of social, domestic or pleasure driving then you’ll have to tax it as a private car, and that means €1,200 per year.
How will I replace my written off BMW 5 Series?
My car is deemed a write off. Open market selling preice, as per revenue, will not replace my car, like-for-like. It's a 2008 BMW 520d M Sport with 98,000 miles on the clock, leather interior, carbon black.
What are my options as this is all they are offering: €13,000. Cost to buy like for like ranges from €18,000 to €22,995.
Thank you.

Expert answer
Hi John,
OK, you can get a 2008 5 Series for under €13,000, but they will probably be even higher mileage than your old one and will most likely be from private vendors, rather than a dealer offering you a warranty and after-sales care. You takes your chances etc.
You may be better served by looking at the UK again - more cars, generally better prices but how about this: why not use the insurance payout to get yourself on the new car buying ladder? BMW Ireland has some cracking PCP deals on both the 5 and 3 Series and that €13k would be a decent deposit to get you off to a good start.
Worth thinking about anyway.
What should we do about replacing our Volvo S40?
I was thinking about changing my Volvo S40 1.6d for a crossover for ease of access as we are pushing on age wise. What would you recommend that is comfortable, reliable and economical bearing in mind our annual mileage is approx 20,000km? We don't need a big vehicle as our family are reared. Also, how much is our own car worth? Is it better to sell it privately or use it as a trade in?
Thank you.

Hi John,
I'm afraid without knowing the year of your S40 it's impossible to give you an idea of the value but I would suggest trading it in rather than trying to sell it yourself - it saves an awful lot of hassle and heartache. As for what to get, try either a Skoda Yeti or a Nissan Qashqai. Both are as reliable as they come, comfy and with a higher (but not too high) seating position. And both are spacious enough that when those reared kids start dropping off the grandkids for a weekend, you'll have room in the back...
Is the 2007 MINI Clubman Cooper a good purchase?
Is the 2007 MINI Clubman Cooper a good purchase and what would I have to look out for?
Paul White (Cork City)Jan 2014 Filed under: reliability
Expert answer
Hi Paul,
Yes! And I'm not just saying that because I own a 2009 one... MINIs are generally pretty well made and reliable, just watch the 1.6 diesel engine for problems with the turbo and the injectors, and check the cabin carefully for signs of abuse or wear and tear. Clubmans are prone to developing an annoying rattle in the little 'ClubDoor' behind the driver's door, but there doesn't seem to be an easy cure for it. If the car cuts out under hard acceleration, check the diesel filter; it can clog and cause fuel starvation.
What are the taxes on charging electric cars?
What does the ESB charge per kilowatt hour for electricity to plug-in electric cars? And is the tax charge on this the same as for petrol or diesel fuel? And if not, why not?
Alan Wilkes (Wicklow)Jan 2014 Filed under: electric cars
Expert answer
Hi Alan,
Electric Ireland charges a standard 19.28 cent per kWh as of Jan 20th 2014, according to moneyguideireland.ie. Other suppliers charge more or less the same although there can be a variation of up to 3c per kWh.
In terms of what is charged to charge an electric car, the energy companies make no distinction. The plug points are downstream of your electricity meter so it's counted as the same juice that goes into your fridge, dishwasher or vacuum cleaner.
The total amount of tax charged on your kWh amounts to about 11 per cent, including both VAT and Carbon Tax, according to Sustainable Energy Ireland.
So, why is this so much lower in tax terms than the 50-odd per cent levied by various charges on pump fuel? Simple: expediency. On the one hand, the Government must be seen to be encouraging the use and development of electric motoring. On the other, there is currently no simple and reliable way to distinguish between electricity being pumped into your car's batteries and what's being used to light, heat and wash.
That said, you can sadly and safely expect that to change, rapidly, if electric car sales ever take off in a big way. The Government has been very careful and canny about making sure that improving vehicle economy hasn't eroded it's annual €1 billion+ tax take from petrol and diesel sales, so if battery cars start eating significantly into that, expect some form of battery levy or electron tax to be enabled tout suite.
What is the downside to buying a fleet car?
What is the downside to buying a fleet car? I have looked at a 2010 Nissan Micra for sale at €5,590 - seems to be a good deal.

Hi Susan,
Nothing at all really, and if you're picking a Micra then you should be on a winner, reliability-wise. Fleet cars are often a better bet than private cars simply because their service history should be full and all major maintenance done on time and schedule. Will it have had a harder life than a private car? Possibly, but just have a careful check over for signs of excess wear and tear and if you're concerned, walk away; plenty more out there.

How to remove sour milk smells?
Hi lads,
Any tips for getting rid of the smell of sour milk from the car would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Brendan Cullen (Dublin)Jan 2014 Filed under: cleaning
Expert answer
Hi Brendan,
Activated carbon is usually the best solution to most smell issues, but if the smell has gotten deep into the fabric, then you may need to take the seats out altogether, remove the fabric (usually they’re zip-on or clip-on), wash thoroughly and then laboriously re-assemble. To be honest, your best bet could be to contact a really good local valeter...

Hi Marie,
It depends on whether you are using it for private or commercial purposes, but for a private driver most insurance companies will cover you. Have a shop around and have a chat with a good broker if you’re struggling to find a good quote.
Can you help me work out Golf spec differences?
What are the differences between the Volkswagen Golf Comfortline Sportspack and the Highline model?
Denise O'Halloran (Cork)Oct 2013 Filed under: optional extras
Expert answer
Hi Denise,
The minutiae of equipment specs are something of a mystery, but thankfully we know some helpful chaps at Volkswagen Group Ireland and they told us that:
"The Sports Pack adds 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights and tinted windows to the Comfortline.
If a customer was to opt for a standard Highline over the Comfortline with Sports Pack, they would get the following additional standard equipment:
Interior
Leather multi-function steering wheel
Sports seats incl. Alcantara/Global upholstery
"Piano Black Mesh" decorative inserts
Carpet mats, front & rear
Ambient lighting
Exterior
Deep Red tail-light clusters
Electrically folding exterior mirrors
Additional chrome mouldings on front grille
Functional
Auto-dimming rear view mirror
Auto headlight activation
Rain sensor
Fatigue Detection
Please note that tinted windows come within the Comfortline Sports Pack, but are not standard on Highline. These can be added to the Highline as an option individually or as part of the Highline Sports Pack."
Does that help?
What's my Volkswagen Jetta worth do you think?
What's my 2011 Volkswagen Jetta 1.6 TDI Highline with 21,000km and a full service history worth? It is near showroom condition and has a few factory fitted extras. Thinking of selling privately and would appreciate a ballpark estimate of what to ask for it.

Hi John,
They're going at that spec and mileage for around €19k in dealerships, so knock around €1,500 to €2,000 off that and see how you get on.
