Cost to tax a VW Caddy privately?
I bought a 2011 1.6 diesel Volkswagen Caddy; any idea how much I will be taxed if looking to tax privately?

Hi Evan,
When you go to tax a commercial vehicle privately then it goes on engine size, regardless of its age. That puts the 1.6-litre Caddy at €514 per annum.
How much VRT on a 2014 Transporter?
Hi,
I would like to buy a Volkswagen Transporter in the UK. Long wheelbase, 2014, 230k miles. I would like to know the VRT I would need to pay for this in Ireland but the Revenue system does not list this very common vehicle.
Any assistance appreciated.
Aidan Raftery (Cork)Oct 2020 Filed under: VRT
Expert answer
Hi Aidan,
Well, generally speaking, vans fall into one of two categories for VRT. Most will be charged 13.3 per cent of the Irish open market selling price (OMSP), which in the case of a 2014 Transporter is likely to be in the region of €13,000. So 13.3 per cent of that is €1,279 and that should be your VRT cost, more or less.
Of course, there’s a chance that your Transporter of choice will fall into the second category, which gets charged a flat-rate of €200 if, says Revenue, “it always had less than four seats and at any time a laden mass greater than 130 per cent of the mass in service.”

What's my 2013 VW Scirocco worth?
Hi guys,
I want to sell my 2013 Volkswagen Scirocco 2.0 TSI GT DSG with 48,000 miles on the clock. Volkswagen offered me €10,500, but obviously it’s worth more than that to a private seller. Imported from UK and I need to sell for best price as the money will go towards my next car. I’m looking to find out how much it’s worth so I’m not under-selling - I’d rather overprice it. Ideally wouldn’t sell private as I’ve had a nightmare in the past with idiots trying to rip me off.

Expert answer
Hi David,
A trade-in value of €10,500 doesn’t look too bad to us to be honest. Values for a 2013 Scirocco are going to be at about the €12-14,000 level, and they’re not the easiest cars to sell so the dealer is probably leaving themselves some headroom to allow for that. I wouldn’t price it at more than €14,500 privately.
Any new Arteon colours coming in 2021?
Do you know if there are any new colours coming in 2021 for the Volkswagen Arteon?

Hi Nicola,
Yes there are, though we don't yet know about Irish availability of them. The three new colours are called Oryx White, Lapiz Blue and Kings Red Metallic.
How much to tax an Amarok privately?
Hi,
I’m looking to buy a 2.0-litre Volkswagen Amarok for my VAT reg’d business, but also want to use it with the family. How much is the private tax?
Thanks
Aiden O Connor (Dublin)Sep 2020 Filed under: taxation
Expert answer
Hi Aiden,
You will pay the princely sum of €710 for a year’s private car tax for a 2.0-litre Amarok. One of the benefits of VW’s decision to go with a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine instead of a larger unit.
Is a previously N1 Touareg this costly to tax?
Hi,
T have a 2016 Volkswagen Touareg that is registered as N1 and I want to change it to M1 and I can, but they tell me that because it was N1 when first registered that my car tax will still be on engine size not CO2, so I will have to pay €1,500 when an identical car can be taxed for €750. I would be grateful for any advice you can give me on this.

Hi Tommy,
I’m afraid that is the case — when you tax a commercial vehicle as a private one you go back to the old engine capacity tax system, so for a big car like a Touareg, with a big engine, that can often work out much more expensive.
What form to tax my Volkswagen T5?
I bought a Volkswagen T5 to use for my surfboards and gear etc. I have to tax it now for the first time. What forms do I need if I am just using for personal use?
John O’Dwyer (Cork)Aug 2020 Filed under: taxation
Expert answer
Hi John,
The only form you’ll need will be form RF100 (you can find that here: https://www.dublincity.ie/sites/default/files/content/RoadsandTraffic/MotorTax/Documents/RF100_Car_GDPR.pdf) and I think a call to your local motor tax office would be a good idea as you’re taxing it privately. It shouldn’t be an issue — you just have to declare it — but they’ll be able to help you over any potential hurdles.
Best hybrid SUV for three teens in back?
Need to replace a very reliable 12-year-old Toyota Corolla Verso that was bought to accommodate three child seats. Mostly city driving, only 100k on said Verso. Now looking at a hybrid SUV, which would need to fit three teens. Any tips on best SUVs with space in rear seats?
Fidelma O'Reilly (Dublin)Aug 2020 Filed under: hybrid
Expert answer
Hi Fidelma,
A Skoda Kodiaq would be a very good bet — lots of space in the rear seat, plus the option of extra seats in the boot (although those ones are a bit tight for teens), but there’s no hybrid version as yet. Its close cousin, the SEAT Tarraco, will soon be offered as a hybrid, while the new Volkswagen Tiguan arrives next summer.
The Toyota RAV4 is pretty roomy, but there’s no seven-seat option and you might find the rear bench a little narrow for three teens side-by-side. The best thing to do is bring them on the test drive and see if they all fit comfortably.
Peugeot’s 3008 plug-in hybrid could also be worth a look, although you might be better off waiting for the larger 5008 version using the same powertrain. Toyota will be launching its new Highlander seven-seat hybrid SUV in early 2021, but that might be too far away for you.
It all depends on how much you want to spend, as there are hybrid versions of the BMW X3 and X5, plus the Volvo XC60 and XC90. Come back to us with your budget if you want more specific advice.
Will a home EV charger do all cars?
I am interested in buying the Peugeot 508 PHEV. My question is, if in future I change to another make (e.g. Volkswagen), can I use the same home charger system that I plan to install with the SEAI grant? I travel 100km (up and down to work) so I think I have to charge it daily.
Ruban Siva (Ratoath)Jul 2020 Filed under: electric cars
Expert answer
Hi Ruban,
Yes, you can. Pretty much all of the home charging points use the standard Type 2 connector, so that will work with any car. Even if you buy a brand-specific charging point, it’ll work with any make or model.
