What diesel replacement for my Golf should I go for?

I am driving a 2000 Volkswagen Golf petrol and I need to change to diesel. I have about €7,000 to spend; what would you recommend?

Hi Tina,

Well, it all depends on what kind of car you want. Trading in your old Golf and adding €7,000 probably gives you a budget of between €8-9k and that, thankfully, means the world is your motorised oyster.

If you want to be sensible, you could just stick with what you know - there are plenty of 2008 Golf 1.9 TDI models around in your price range and there are few cars that are better to be honest. Plenty of Focus, Astra, Auris and Kia cee'd options around too if you fancy a change.

You could though use the opportunity to trade up. Fancy an Audi A4 Avant? A BMW 520d? A Honda Accord? A Hyundai Santa Fe? We found all of these inside your notional budget. But carefully of course - abandon anything without a full service history and check condition very very carefully,  but there are plenty of options for you.

Can I swap my Passat's clocks for others?

Can you swap 2006 Volkswagen Passat Sport clocks with Highline clocks?

Toni Power (Wexford)

Expert answer

Hi Toni,

You can because they’re obviously designed to fit in the same space, but I’d ask for specialist help with this as it’ll be having the odometer reset to the correct mileage for your car and that’s not something you want to try for yourself or trust to an amateur. And an incorrect mileage reading can seriously affect the value of your car.

Toyota Corolla petrol or Volkswagen Passat diesel?

Toyota Corolla 1.4 petrol(2008) versus Volkswagen Passat 1.9 diesel (2008)? My husband drives on a motorway every day to work about 45km a day. Our budget is from €5,000 to €8,000. We've seen a 2008 Toyota Corolla with 103,000km and a Passat 1.9 TDI diesel with 125,000km on the clock. Can you guide us in selecting the most suitable car?

Thnx

Hi Ashline,

A tough call this one. Your annual mileage isn't really enough to tip you over into diesel territory, and the Corolla is likely to be the more reliable of the two cars. That said, the Passat would be much more comfy and cosseting on the journey and it costs €180 a year less to tax.

So I guess if comfort is your priority, get the Volkswagen. If it's reliability, go for the Corolla, which will probably also work out the cheaper of the two to run overall.

Why does my engine sound different when cold?

Why is there a different engine noise when cold in my 2010 Volkswagen Passat DSG 1.4 TSI?

Expert answer

Hi Stephen,

It's always tricky to diagnose such things remotely, so we'd advise you to go to a good mechanic to be sure.

If the engine has always sounded different when cold then it's unlikely to be something to worry about. Many engines run a little differently when cold to speed up warming of the catalytic convertors and get everything up to temperature.

However, if it's a new noise then you really should get it checked out, as it could well be to do with inadequate lubrication of parts of the engine until the oil is warmed up. This could be caused by a blocked gauze in the oil sump or some other reason for lack of oil pressure. It's worth double checking your oil level before you do much else.

Which big 4x4 to go for with €9,000 budget?

I am thinking of buying a second hand four-wheel drive. Something like a Range Rover, Land Rover, Volkswagen Touareg or similiar. I only have €9,000 to spend therefore will be looking at anything from 2003 to 2006. Most have about 120,000 miles or more. I am worried I might end up in a whole load of pain buying something that old. Any suggestions?

I know there are the old reliables like the Kia Soretno and Hyundai Sante Fe, but I am afraid they are a little bland for me.

Hi Michael,

Well, the simple secret is to buy very carefully and don’t touch anything that doesn’t come with a full and complete service history. Old Land Rovers and Range Rovers are always a bit troublesome (although much less so than they used to be), but a Touareg should be a solid choice. Of course, if you want ultimate reliability you should just buy a Toyota Land Cruiser...

What do you think about the Chevrolet Nubira?

What is the general consensus on the 2005 Chevrolet Nubira 1.6 automatic?

Richard Clarke (Galway)

Expert answer

Hi Richard,

I'm afraid the general consensus is that Daewoo never made a decent car in its history as a manufacturer, and gluing a Chevrolet badge on the front didn't do anything to improve them.

The Nubira would be relatively cheap and painless to own - they tend to be reliable - but even for very little money you can find a better nine-year old car than this.

If it's the automatic that you're particularly after, we've found a bevy of mid-size auto saloons for Nubira money that are vastly superior. A Nissan Primera perhaps? Or how about a Toyota Avensis? Or even a Volkswagen Bora? They're all out there for sale right now.

Either way, life's just too short to lumber yourself with a Chevy Nubira. Aim higher.

How much is a Volkswagen Passat taxi worth?

How much is a 2005 Volkswagen Passat 1.9 diesel taxi worth?

Hi Yi,

As ever, it depends on mileage, condition and history but the taxi thing does push values down a good bit, so I'd say you're looking at a value of between €3,500 and €4,500.

Is the new Volkswagen Polo way better?

Guys, I have a 2000 Volkswagen Polo. How much better would the "new" Polo be compared to it? Even though I do very little mileage, I'm in two minds whether to upgrade or not, please help!

Hi Michael,

This question arrives at a timely moment as I've just stepped out of a brand new Polo 1.4 TSI test car. I'd have to say that it's a long, long, loooooong way ahead of a 2000 model year Polo, fine car though that was at the time. I had always felt that the Polo was a little bit of the also-ran of the Volkswagen range, but I think that this latest round of updates, especially on the inside, finally make it feel like the mini-Golf it always should have been.

It's nice to drive, comfy and that 1.4 turbo petrol engine is a gem, giving almost-diesel-like economy but proving revvy and willing when you want to get going. A far cry from the too-sluggish 1.2 petrol Polos of old. So, yes, upgrade - my take is that it's well worth it.

Here's our first drive of the new Volkswagen Polo for reference

Is a ten-year-old Golf still reliable?

I'm looking at buying a 2004 Volkswagen Golf really soon; is a 10-year old Golf still reliable?

John Ryan (Thurles)

Expert answer

Hi John,

Yes, by and large Golfs are well enough built to withstand years of abuse, but then this is an older car so there are some areas to check...

Make sure the cambelt has been changed, check that the water pump is working (quick warm up from cold, but no issues with holding the temperature at idle), listen for noises from both the front suspension and steering, check that the air conditioning (if fitted) is working OK and make sure that the gearbox (manual or auto) is shifting cleanly.

Oh and avoid the FSI petrol model - they don't like regular 95RON unleaded petrol.

New Nissan Juke or used Volkswagen Golf?

Brand new Nissan Juke 1.6 SV D, or '141' zero miles Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TL Diesel: which is the best buy?

Edel Foley (Dublin)

Hi Edel,

The Golf. Sounds predictable I know, and I can see the appeal of the Juke's more exciting styling and sportier demeanour, but the fact remains that the Golf is more spacious, more practical, better to drive and more economical. There's a good reason they're so popular...
