Looking for a family SUV for €25,000...
Hi,
I am looking for an SUV that would fit two car seats and a booster base. I have one-year-old twins and a seven-year-old. Also need the boot space for a twin stroller. My budget is around €25k and my preference is to get a SUV and not a van shaped car like the VW Touran.
Any recommendations?

Hi Haris,
It will be difficult to find a car that will fit two large rear-facing child seats and a booster in a single row without going for much larger vehicles. The alternative is an SUV with a third row, but that comes with compromises as well.
Anyway, searching within your budget, there are options. Large SUVs such as the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90 would fit you all in, but at €25,000 you'd be buying relatively old ones with high mileage and likely high maintenance costs. Same for the BMW X5.
The Hyundai Santa Fe would be a better bet, as would the Kia Sorento or indeed the Nissan X-Trail. All of these are large SUVs and well-priced, reliable and decently equipped.
Finally, and I think this might be the best option, there's the Peugeot 5008. It has three separate seats in the middle row, so should fit all the kids in and you can fold away the rearmost seats to maximise boot space. There are petrol and diesel variants within budget with far lower mileage than the premium-badge options mentioned above.
You've not told us about any other preferences in terms of fuel, size of vehicle or anything, so come back to us if you want us to help narrow down the search further.
No matter what you decide, make sure you bring the child seats with you on any test drive and ensure they fit in properly.
I can't get the NOx figure for a Golf GTI imported from Japan...

I imported a 2009 VW Golf Pirelli GTI (model code ABA-1KBYD) from Japan. I need to get the NOx figure but failed to find it on MLIT. Can ye guys help? Volkswagen was very unhelpful.

Hi Tom,
The NOx rating is proving to be very difficult to find for many buyers of used Japanese cars and most of the time it is not on the MILT site.
We've discovered that it may be possible to obtain a Certificate of Conformity from the Japan Inspection Organization, though we've not used the process ourselves. Click on the link to read up on how to do this.
How come these VW Shuttles have different tax rates?
How come tax on a 2010 VW Shuttle is €1,250 euro and on a 2005 it's only €640?

The older one is taxed according to its engine size (and at that it must be the 1.8-litre engine), while the newer is taxed according to its CO2 emissions rating. The rules changes in 2008.

It would be very unlikely to pass, though you never know, as the testing standards across the country are variable. It could fail on a number of things, including excessive loudness, measured emissions and the fact it's a modified exhaust system.
VW ID.4 or T-Roc, or Skoda Octavia?
Hi guys,
Looking for your thoughts on my next car. Currently in the mix are VW ID.4, VW T-Roc 1.5 petrol and Skoda Octavia 1.5 MHEV. I drive into the city three times weekly, approx. 90km total and the occasional jaunt cross country.
I have my own driveway and parking/charging in work. I'm looking at 242/251 versions of all the above cars and I'll be paying cash.
Everyone tells me to go fully electric, but I am drawn to the look of the Skoda (not keen on the SUV look).
Any thoughts or should I be looking at something totally different? Appreciate any direction.

Hi Brendan,
It certainly sounds like electric power would suit you, though if you decide against, the Skoda Octavia is an excellent car.
I'm assuming the cars listed mean a budget of nearly €40,000. There are better options out there than the ID.4. You could get a nearly new Cupra Tavascan, for example, or the smaller Cupra Born if you want to keep the price down or stay away from SUVs altogether.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an excellent car as well, as is the Ioniq 6, though the latter's styling is not to all tastes. The Kia EV6 is along the same lines and it's more a crossover than an SUV.
You could also afford brand-new examples of the Peugeot E-308 and MG4, both conventional five-door hatchbacks.

Wondering is it worth importing a VW Tiguan PHEV?

I have a question related to importing a car from the UK. I have read your guide and it's very informative.
I am trying to work out how much it will cost me to import a 2025 VW Tiguan 1.5 PHEV basic spec model from England. It would be more than six months old and have about 15,000km on the clock.
How much would the price difference be depending on if it was from the UK mainland or NI and is there a decent saving to be made compared to buying one from a garage here?
I see many Irish VW garages are selling 2025 used imported UK cars on their forecourts so I'm presuming there is value to be had by importing.

Hi Dillon,
It would make no sense to import such a car from GB (England, Scotland and Wales) as it would attract VAT at 23 per cent and import duty at 10 per cent, on top of the VRT and NOx levy. That is unavoidable in the case of the Tiguan – and assuming you are an Irish resident already, not someone moving here from the GB.
The same vehicle imported from Northern Ireland may not be subject to any VAT or import duty, so long as it was either sold new in the North or it has been imported into the North according to the Windsor Framework and then used there. You will need paperwork to prove all of that.
Assuming you find a car that qualifies in NI, then it's just VRT and the NOx levy. The latter will be a minimal amount for the PHEV as emissions of NOx will be ultra-low (likely no more than €200, depending on precise specification of the car).
Likewise, CO2 emissions should be sub-50g/km (check this, as it depends on the specification), so VRT is calculated as seven per cent of the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP), with a minimum fee of €140.
The OMSP can be tricky to estimate as it's the figure Revenue reckons the car is worth once registered on Irish plates. A quick scan of the classifieds suggests this could be in the region of €45,000-€48,000.
Assuming the worst case – i.e. an OMSP of €48,000 – then the VRT bill would be €3,360.
So, aside from travel/transport and insurance, this Tiguan should cost a good deal less than €4,000 on top of its purchase price to import.
If you can find one that qualifies for importation without VAT or import duty, and its purchase price is equivalent to a value lower than €40,000, then you are potentially making a saving.
Just double-check all your paperwork. It will obviously be more hassle than buying at an Irish dealer, with no option to trade your existing car in, so weigh up the savings to ensure it's all worth it.

Before we take a look for potential cars for you, I would say that you should avoid diesels, as they're not suited to mostly city driving and will end up costing more in maintenance. Stick with petrol, or hybrid if something comes up within budget.
A small estate such as the Skoda Fabia Combi could work well for you. There are plenty within budget, they're reliable and they have huge boots. The only reservation I have is that the rear seating isn't huge, which might be a problem if you have two rear-facing child seats in there. Worth going to take a look at one and making that decision for yourself. The SEAT Ibiza ST (Sports Tourer) is pretty much the same car underneath, incidentally, if you prefer the look of that.
There are VW Golf and Passat estates on the market within budget and with petrol engines as well, and they come with much more rear legroom than the Fabia, but you'd likely have to make do with an older model for under €10,000.
On a completely different tack are cars such as the Nissan Note and Kia Venga, which are more upright than most hatchbacks that take up the same amount of space on the road, to the benefit of interior space. They beat the Fabia for rear legroom, for example, but their boots aren't huge. I wouldn't want to be carrying a travel-system-style buggy as well as anything else. Nonetheless those ones I've mentioned are reliable and within budget.
The Honda Jazz is similar and it's an excellent choice.

Looking to buy a compact automatic car...
I am looking to buy an automatic small car as my first car. My partner has a small manual Toyota Aygo and we think it would make sense for my car to be bigger/or with a bigger engine anyway so that we can use it for longer journeys and have the Aygo for around the city (Dublin).
We have been looking between years of 2012-2018 at the Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, MINI Cooper, Volkswagen Polo/Golf, Audi A1 and Hyundai i20/i30... but we are stuck and getting more and more confused...
We were leaning towards the Peugeot/Renault because of great prices/low mileage but we don't know what to do.
Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Dawn,
Most people in your position – i.e. a new driver – consider the cost of insurance when choosing their first car. You'll need to keep the engine size down for that reason, though there are plenty of small-engined cars that should still fit the bill. Just keep it in mind and maybe get insurance quotes before you commit to any car.
I would suggest that you're better off going for a slightly larger car if it's to be used regularly for longer journeys as they are generally more comfortable at motorway speeds. From your list, the VW Golf and Hyundai i30 would be good options, but you could also seek out the SEAT Leon, Peugeot 308 or Mazda3.
I've probably given you more to think about there…

Hi John,
Your Octavia's boot is rated to 600 litres, we believe, which is difficult to match unless you go for a much larger car. The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer, for example, holds a little more than that, but it's out of budget. Same story for the VW Tayron eHybrid (PHEV), which has a bigger boot again.
Those cars are still relatively new, so you can't afford used versions yet, either, though we did find a selection of second-hand Skoda Superb PHEVs on the market within budget. They're massive in all directions and might well suit your needs, so long as you don't mind going for a car that's two to three years old.
The VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq have comparable boots of well over 500 litres and are in budget – though there's much more choice in the ID.4 lineup for that money.
Last but not least, and assuming you have nothing against buying an SUV, the Hyundai Tucson PHEV has a boot of about 560 litres and is within budget.
Let us know what you think of these suggestions.
Looking to buy a car to pull a caravan...
I am looking at buying a second car that will pull a caravan. I haven't bought the caravan yet. I am considering a 2015 or 2016 diesel car, but as I've never owned a diesel car before, I'm concerned I could be buying trouble, even from reputable dealers.
Is it possible to buy a 9- or 10-year-old petrol car to pull a caravan, and what make of petrol would be the best? I understand the weight etc to pull a caravan.

Hi Doteen,
A car's history and how well it has been serviced is important no matter what fuel type it is. The added complication with modern diesels is that their DPFs – and other components - can clog up if they're only used for short trips. I don't believe where you buy the car has any bearing on that. It's all about how the car was used.
Make sure all the warning lights are working and going off when the car is running, insist on a detailed and complete service history and take the car for a decent test drive (again, regardless of the fuel).
A diesel car will be far more economical than a petrol one when it comes to towing and for the most part will be better suited to the job in terms of low-down pulling power (torque).
Nonetheless, if you'd prefer a petrol car, that's entirely doable. Just don't go for a small-engined, lightweight car and expect it to do a good job. Cars such as the Ford Mondeo, Skoda Octavia, VW Passat and others all came with powerful turbocharged petrol engines, though they're much rarer and hence harder to find than the diesel equivalents.
