Do I pay the NOx levy if I import my older car?

If I am importing a vehicle from Australia and it is exempt from VRT, as I have owned it for over six months, will it be exempt from this new NOx tax? Revenue states the NOx is calculated as part of VRT. I hope so or else it is a €4,850 bill I was not expecting.

Hi Ed,

Yes, theoretically it should be free for the NOx tax as, as you say, that’s calculated as a component of VRT and you are bringing the car to Ireland as part of a change of address.

How much VRT on 2014 Audi A5 from UK?

Hi,

I just bought a UK-reg 2014 Audi A5. How much will the VRT cost? It looks like €2,000 just for extra NOx charge.

Thanks

Robert

Hi Robert,

Yes, depending on the specific engine/gearbox combo, circa €2,000 looks about right for most older diesel models. Depending on the spec and version of A5 you’re looking at, I’d say the rest of the VRT cost will be in the region of €3,800 or thereabouts.

Extra NOx levy for imported Mokka?

Hi,

I've just bought a 2014 Mokka Techline CDTi (120g/km) and just heard about the NOx levy; what should I expect to pay extra on top of €1,680 VRT? Help, as I'm registering it on Jan 6.

Thank you

Hi Lynn,

It’s not going to be cheap I’m afraid. According to the best figures we can find, a 2014 1.7 CDTi Opel/Vauxhall Mokka has NOx emissions of 133mg/km. On the new NOx tax of €5 per mg for the first 60mg, €15 per mg between 60 and 80mg and €25 per mg above that, you’re looking at a NOx tax cost of €1,925 ON TOP of the normal VRT cost (which is going to be around €1,700 or so).

I want to use a crew cab privately...

I want to use a six-seat crew cab as a private car; how much is the VRT and road tax on a 2.2-litre diesel?

Hi Fergus,

VRT won’t come into it. Even if you’re buying as a private buyer, you still pay the 13.3 per cent commercial vehicle rate. As for motor tax, for a 2.2 engine it’ll be €951 per year.

Do I need to tell Revenue if I didn't import?

Do I need to let Irish Revenue know if I resell my imported UK car back to the the UK garage where I bought it as the VRT is too high on it when I got the figure today?

Hi Mary,

Yes, you should do. There’s no strict legal requirement to, but if you’ve set the VRT train in motion, then technically you have to pay up after 30 days, so you’d better let them know, or there may be an unpleasant knock at your door (or more realistically a nasty letter in the post…).

Looking to import a Ford Transit...

Hi,

I am looking to import a Ford Transit Custom crew cab six-seat with separate cargo area. I'm not sure on the VRT charges due to all the changes at the start of 2019. Can you advise me on what charges I will be liable for? I tried contacting Revenue, but unfortunately no response!

Many thanks

Hi Seamus,

If it’s a crew cab with a separate cargo area then that should (emphasis on the 'should') count as a van and will therefore qualify for 13.3 per cent commercial VRT.

Can I add seats to my van?

For a van with (J) N1 (J.1) C (J.5) 2359 (V.7) 217: this vehicle is currently taxed at commercial rate. If the number of seats were increased from three to include two more in the back, what are the VRT implications and tax class implications in relation to cost for this conversion? The vehicle has been imported.

Hi Phil,

It depends on the specific vehicle. Some vans retain their N1 classification if converted to a crew-cab, so your best bet is to contact your local tax office to get the specific details for your van.

Considering a Ford Ranger Raptor...

Just wondering. I'm looking at buying the Ford Ranger Raptor through the company. Commercial vehicle, registered to the company etc. Insurance through company fleet policy. Can I avail of five per cent VRT for pickup truck simelar to that of van BIK and am I ok to carry passengers when using it for personal use? I'm thinking yes, could you have the answer as I'm not sure.

Hi Trevor,

We’re not sure about the five per cent VRT BIK rate, as that will depend on your personal circumstances and how the vehicle is paid for and registered. Better to ask your company accountant that one. As for being OK to carry passengers for personal use, yes you can, but you’ll have to register it as a private car and tax it as such (which could be tricky if you’re trying to get the van rate BIK) and you’ll have to make sure that your insurance covers it for social/domestic/pleasure use as well as work.

Will the NOx levy be refunded on export?

With the new NOx tax on imports, will the same rebate be given on exports?

Michael Fitzpatrick (Charleville)

Hi Michael,

Yes, it will. Revenue has confirmed to us that, for any car imported or purchased after the 1st of Jan 2020, the NOx charge will be included in any VRT refund when and if the car is re-exported.

Should I wait to import a 2018 car?

Hi, I have bought a 2018 car in the UK and am wondering would I save a lot on VRT if I wait until the beginning of January to bring it in rather than mid December as the car will be a year older then.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Gareth,

It won’t make a huge difference to be honest. Because Revenue take note of the month of registration as well as the year, the extra few weeks won’t really affect the VRT charge very much. And if it’s an older diesel, definitely get the VRT done before January as on the 1st, the new NOx tax comes in and that could add a significant amount extra to your bill.
