How to work out VRT on a 2018 BMW 320d?
Hi, I just read your article on VRT charges on imported cars from the UK. I am thinking of buying a 2018 BMW 3 Series 2.0 320d M Sport. How does the VRT work? I got one quote for €23k for VRT, and then I did another one and it was €6,700. Can you help me find out how much I'm going to pay for VRT?
Kind regards
Eric

Hi Eric,
The problem is that VRT, with fluctuating and uncertain second hand values, plus issues of equipment, history and condition to consider, is a constantly moving target. I would think that the €6,700 figure is much, much closer to the truth than the €23,000 one, but unfortunately, given the vagaries of the VRT system, you won’t know for certain until you get the bill.

Is a five-seat Defender a commercial?
Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a 2013 Defender 110 2.2D XS Utility Wagon (five seats). I have read here that you can tax a commercial vehicle privately and the tax is determined by the older pre-2008 tax bands based on engine size. That would make the tax €951, which is a lot lower than if it was based on emissions. My question is, is a five-seat Utility wagon considered a commercial? As I recall, there was a clamp down on 'crew cabs' for this tax process.
Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,
There was indeed a clampdown on crew-cabs and five-seat SUVs qualifying for commercial rate VRT and tax, but being as (a) this Defender pre-dates the clampdown and (b) it has a separate and un-glazed cargo compartment, it should just squeak through.
Difference between motor tax and VRT?
Hi,
Could you please help me understand the distinction between VRT and the annual 'motor tax' in the Republic of Ireland? I'm asking from the UK and I'm trying to understand the system.
Thanks

Expert answer
Hi Alina,
It’s actually a pretty easy distinction. Motor tax is the Irish equivalent of the UK’s Road Fund Licence. It’s paid annually, and is based on the CO2 emissions of the vehicle. The cheapest rate is for cars that emit no CO2 (i.e. electric cars), which cost €120 a year to tax, while the most expensive rate is for cars emitting more than 225g/km of CO2, which is €2,350 a year.
Can I import a car from UK in other name?
Hi, my girlfiend has been working in Ireland fior nine months, but has a UK home address; could I import a car in her name to avoid paying VRT?

Hi Pat,
You theoretically could do, but you’d have to show to Revenue proof of at least six months' tax and insurance, in her name, for the car and proof of change of address from the UK to Ireland, again in her name.
Taxes on importing my older Pathfinder?
I am moving to Ireland, so how much VRT and emissions tax is due on a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder Aventura? I've had it for nine years.

Hi Joe,
If you are moving to Ireland, and bringing the car with you, and you can show proof of at least six months’ tax and insurance, as well as proof of change of address, then you’ll be exempt from paying VRT.
NOx value for a 2016 Fiat Panda diesel?
Hi,
I'm having difficulty with the ROS VRT calculator on this car: 2016 Fiat Panda 1.3 MultiJet Diesel, with 60,000 miles on the clock. I haven't got any official figure for the NOx value and wondered if you could help with an indication of how much the cost would be?
Kind Regards
Gerry

Hi Gerry,
As we’ve mentioned before, finding accurate NOx emissions is a bit of a minefield, and ultimately the only figure that actually counts is the one on the car’s Certificate of Conformity (CoC) document. We believe that the 2016 Panda MultiJet has NOx emissions of 161mg/km, but I’d ask to see the car’s CoC before making any final decisions.
VRT on a new Land Cruiser Utility import?
Hi,
Do you happen to know the VRT rate for a new Toyota Land Cruiser Utility two-door with two seats imported from the UK? I'm confused!
Thanks.
Leslie Barfoot (Magherafelt )Jul 2020 Filed under: VRT
Expert answer
Hi Leslie,
I would double-check this with your local motor tax office, but in theory a Land Cruiser Utility will be charged at 13.3 per cent VRT of the Irish Open Market Selling Price. The short-wheelbase Land Cruiser retails at €43,950 new in Ireland, so it’s going to be a fair chunk of VRT, plus if it’s a new car you’ll have to pay the VAT on top of that.
VRT on this low-mileage motorcycle?
Hello,
I have bought a motorcycle in the UK (registered on 5th October 2016). According to the VRT website - if the bike has less than 6,000km on it - VAT is payable. The bike has 4,000km on it. I work in England (Monday - Friday), but not at the moment with COVID-19 - and am working for home. The bike is still in the UK with the dealer (I have paid for it but not collected it).
Thanks

Hi Mark,
Actually, the rules on this are a little unclear, because the examples given by Revenue don’t relate to a bike as old as yours with as little mileage. I think the best thing to do is to get onto your local motor tax office and check with them before making any decisions.
NOx levy on a 2014 Skoda Octavia TDI?
Hi,
How much is the NOx levy on a 2014 Skoda Octavia SE 1.6 TDI?
Thanks
Igor Cotorobai (Dublin )Jun 2020 Filed under: VRT
Expert answer
Hi Igor,
According to our best data, it should be a 131mg/km, so that would equate to €1,575 of NOx charge, which of course is on top of the rest of the VRT calculation.
How much VRT on importing a crew cab van?
How much VRT or other taxes would have to be paid if I bought a crew cab van in from the UK e.g. Ford Transit Custom, Mercedes Vito, VW Transporter etc
Lar Crowley (Kilkenny )Jun 2020 Filed under: importing
Expert answer
Hi Lar,
A crew cab is theoretically a commercial vehicle, so you’ll pay 13.3 per cent of the OMSP (Open Market Selling Price) as defined by Revenue. As to what that value is, that will depend on the individual van you’re looking at.
