Chevrolet Spark as good as a Corsa?
Chevrolet Spark 1.2: is this vehicle on a par with the Opel Corsa?
John Delaney (Mountmellick)Mar 2017 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi John,
Frankly, no. Chevrolet models for Europe were basically re-badged and re-engineered Daewoos, and built very much down to a price in Korea. While the Spark shares a lot of components with the Corsa, the Opel is a far-better built car.
Should I worry about 2008 BMW diesels?
Is the engine issue with BMW diesel cars from 2008 a real concern?
Paul Dolan (Dublin)Mar 2017 Filed under: diesel
Expert answer
Hi Paul,
Yes, it can be. The N47 2.0-litre diesel engine had an issue with its timing chain, which had a nasty habit of snapping, and which was located right at the back of the engine, against the firewall, making it hard to access or inspect. BMW claims to have fixed the issue, which affected engines produced between 2007 and 2011, but it’s wise to tread carefully, make sure you buy only cars with full BMW service histories, and keep that service history up in case the problem occurs.
Hyundai i40 or Renault Fluence?
Hi,
We are thinking of changing our car from a Nissan Juke (as there is limited space) to either a Renault Fluence or Hyundai i40. What do you think is best?
Nicola Walsh (Wexford )Mar 2017 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Nicola,
Go for the i40 — it’s much bigger and better built than the Fluence, and will be more reliable in the long term. It will also hold its value better than the Fluence.
Can I get the owner's name from a car reg?
Can you tell me the name and address of the registered keeper for a Mercedes-Benz C 220 CDI, reg number DE12 XXX?
Michael Blanchfield (Bray Co.Wicklow)Mar 2017 Filed under: registration
Expert answer
Hi Michael,
I'm afraid that's not information that we have access to. That's a UK car so the only ones that would have that information is the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority) and the British Transport Police, neither of which are in the habit of disclosing such private information to the public.
It makes no difference that it is a British car; the same limitations would apply to an Irish one.
How much to tax a BMW 318i?
Hi, could you please let me know how much it is to tax a 2006 BMW 318i M Sport?
From Lo in Dublin
Lorraine Lyons (Dublin)Mar 2017 Filed under: taxation
Expert answer
Hi Lorraine,
It’ll set you back €710 a year, unless it was imported from the UK post-2008. If it’s an import, then it will be on the current CO2-based system, which will mean tax of €750 a year.
I connected my battery the wrong way...
I have a 1986 Nissan Serena 2.3 diesel. I accidently connected my battery the wrong way around and tried to start it. When I discovered my mistake and connected it properly, it keeps turning but it won't start. Also, wipers, indicators, heater won't work. What damage have I done?
Patrick Mcnally (Mayo)Mar 2017 Filed under: electrics
Expert answer
Hi Patrick,
It's not easy to assess the damage from afar I'm afraid, so I'd suggest getting a good autoelectrician or mechanic out to have a look. It's possible that the ECU (engine control unit) has been damaged, but I'd also hope that has protection against such things built into it. Most likely there are fuses blown somewhere along the line. As I said, get someone to look at it for you and hope nothing expensive has been damaged.
Is my car battery flat?
I have no power; turn the key and the lights on the dash board go off.
David Wallace (Ireland)Mar 2017 Filed under: electrics
Expert answer
Hi David,
Very hard to assess such a thing from afar, but certainly sounds like a flat battery to us. Try to charge yours up or get a 'jump' from someone else. If no luck then best bet is to get a good mechanic or auto electrician out to have a look.
Best of luck
What's the Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG like?
I am in the process of buying a 2011 Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG with 90,000km on the clock. I love the M156 engine and the sound it makes and want to keep this car for good, but I don't know the average life expectancy of these engines or cars. Would you please provide me with your usual expert opinion on the concerns I have about this stupendous car? Would the 2011 ML 63 AMG or the ML 500 still have spare parts in 10 years from now? If I decide to keep this car for good, could it be repaired should something go wrong in 10 years' time?
David Jackson (Lubumbashi)Mar 2017 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi David,
There are no major reported reliability problems for the AMG M156 V8 engine, other than that they can occasionally develop issues with the bolts that hold the engine head in place. Mind you, a huge amount will depend on how well the previous owner looked after it. While reliable, AMGs are of course bought for their high performance, and if the previous owner has thrashed it about, or not kept it serviced properly, then it could be troublesome. A full book of service stamps should be a good sign, though.
As for spare parts, I really wouldn't worry too much about that, as car makers produce spare parts for a very long time after a vehicle goes out of production.
VAT and VRT on UK import commercial?
Hi, I'm VAT-registered and looking to import a second hand commercial/crewcab vehicle from the UK. Am I correct that I don't have to pay UK VAT and only VRT when registering the car in Ireland?
Thanks
Bob Smith (Dublin)Mar 2017 Filed under: importing
Expert answer
Hi Bob,
As long as they’re more than six months old, with more than 6,000km on the clock, then you’re right — no VAT, only VRT.
Should my Skoda EGR valve be covered?
Hi guys,
I just bought a 2010 Skoda Octavia from a local small time dealer just five months ago and he gave me a six-month warranty. I had been back twice with the car losing power and he told me it was a filter. Just last week the car wouldn't start too easily for me and now the dealer put it in to a main Skoda dealer and they have said it's the EGR valve and the small dealer says he won't cover this under his engine and gearbox warranty.
So my question is, where do I stand here on this matter?
Andy O Brien (Cork)Mar 2017 Filed under: warranty
Expert answer
Hi Andy,
Well, the exhaust gas recirculation valve is part of the turbocharger and that's part of the engine, so from here it sounds like it should be covered, especially as you flagged the problem up earlier and have been trying to get it fixed since.
That said, often warranties exclude items such as the EGR valve, precisely because they can be fragile so ask to see the warranty paperwork and check the small print for any exclusions. If the dealer doesn't issue warranty paperwork, then you could argue that you had a reasonable assumption that major mechanical items such as an EGR valve were covered by a verbally-issued warranty.
Either way, probably a good idea to get your solicitor on the case if the dealer won't play ball.
