What should I pay for a Toyota Corolla?

What should I pay for a 2008 Toyota Corolla 1.4 petrol Luna model?

Mary Kyne (Castlebar)

Expert answer

Hi Mary,

We've seen them as cheap as €5,950 on a private sale but that's probably not the best way to go. Budget between €7,500 and €8,000 to get a good one, with history, from a dealer.

Is a hollow noise from my Mitsubishi Colt normal?

My Mitsubishi Colt recently developed a hollow noise when revved; is this normal?

Pat O Mahony (Cork)

Expert answer

Hi Pat,

Just as it's difficult for you to describe a noise to us, it's very difficult for us to help analyse the problem from afar. A hollow noise could be caused by a hole in the exhaust (it would be there even when the car isn't moving) or it could be something else entirely. Best bet is to bring the car along to a good mechanic.

Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4?

Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4? We cover numerous long distance road trips and use for towing a half-tonne trailer off-road as well.

Expert answer

Hi Simon,

Both are excellent choices. In fact the RAV4 probably doesn't quite get the attention it deserves - it's good to drive, spacious and well made. Good value too.

That said I think I'd go for the CR-V. The 1.6 i-DTEC front-drive model would probably be sufficient. It's very spacious, really comfy and good on economy too. There is a new four-wheel drive 1.6 160hp version on the way though, so it may be worth waiting until that arrives in the summer before you make a final decision.

What is your opinion of the Renault Dacia?

What is your opinion of the Renault Dacia?

Breda Quaid (Co Kildare)

Expert answer

Hi Breda,

Dacia is a stand-alone brand, not an actual Renault model (although the company is owned by Renault and shares its components with various Renault models). They're cheap and cheerful - you really do get what you pay for, which is basic, no frills transport. Nothing wrong with that, and by and large reliability seems to be a strong point, but don't go in expecting sophistication.

What should I look out for in a Jaguar XJ6?

What should I look out for in a 2003 Jaguar XJ6? Mileage 122k. Excellent condition, one owner from new.

Expert answer

Hi Jim,

That depends on whether you mean the last of the old-shape XJs that finished production in 2003 or the first of the new-shape models, the all-aluminium one that started production that year.

If it's the new one then the news is good - they're solidly reliable and there are no major reported faults. That said there were some recalls so you need to make sure those were attended to. And as with any expensive car of this age make sure all the electrical bits are working properly and that it has a full, uninterrupted service history. Also, as both the body and chassis are made of aluminium, it can be expensive to get minor dings and bumps fixed so maybe have a ring around to see what kind of prices you get quoted for any work that needs doing before you buy.

What's your opinion of the Opel Insignia?

Hi there.

What your opinion of the Opel Insignia? What kind of common weaknesses does it have? And what parts need to be changed regularly? For example I have B5 Volkswagen Passat. From my experience I can say that suspension (independent) is not good for Irish roads therefore it's a weakness of this car. But engine is good - never had troubles (200,000 miles).

Thanks in advance

Expert answer

Hi Roman,

The Insignia is a thoroughly good car, and one that feels especially slick and pleasant to drive. The only common problems seem to be small electrical glitches (alarm systems especially) and leaky boot seals that let rain in.

We've never experienced any suspension problems with any Insignia we've driven, nor does it seem to be an issue amongst owners. Could you elaborate on your Passat problems? Could be a useful bit of info for our database...

What's the best used Mercedes-Benz E-Class to go for?

Which used E-Class Mercedes 2.0 or less is best? Which year?

Expert answer

Hi Bill,

The trick will be to buy the newest one you can. The 2002 to 2010 E-Class was beset with all sorts of reliability issues, especially in its complicated electronics.

Your best bet is to get a current-shape E 200 CDI. It's a 2.1 but the low emissions and frugal fuel economy will keep your bills down.

What could be wrong with my Opel Astra's heating?

Hi. I have a 2008 Opel Astra 1.3 diesel estate. My heating in the car is working but the heat is not that hot at all and this isn't normal. My friend has the same car and there is a vast difference in he heat...

Brian Fitzgerald (Cobh Cork)

Expert answer

Hi Brian,

It's likely that the heating matrix within the car heating system has corroded and needs to be replaced. It could also be the actual switches controlling the heating, but that's less likely.

Either way, you need to get the car to a good mechanic to have it checked over.

What engine should I get in a Toyota Verso?

What is the best engine size to go for in the 2014 Toyota Verso S:  1.6 D-4D or 2.0 D-4D

Thanks

Siobhan Shanahan (Co. Cork)

Expert answer

Hi Siobhan,

I presume you mean the Verso rather than the Verso S? Don't buy a Verso S - it's horrid...

The Verso on the other hand is really good and one of our favourite mid-size MPVs. As for the engine choice it's a bit of a coin toss - both are in Band A4 for tax, both are really good. The 2.0-litre is Toyota's own design, the 1.6 is a new engine supplied by BMW as part of a technology sharing agreement between the two companies. On balance, we'd go for the 1.6. It's not as pleasingly powerful as the 2.0 but it will be cheaper to buy up front and probably a little cheaper to run long term, and certainly cheaper to insure.

What's your opinion on the 2009 Toyota Yaris?

Hi,

I would like buy a 2009 Toyota Yaris 1.0-litre manual. It has a Toyota service history service. Is 100k miles too much for its three-cylinder engine? What is average price, please?

Thanks. Sean

Expert answer

Hi Sean,

100k? Nope, it's a Yaris - that's barely run-in, especially if it has a full service history. Prices seem to run from as low as €6,500 to as much as €9,000 for an 09 Yaris, so with that kind of mileage I reckon you should be spending about €7,500-ish.
