Any ideas why my Skoda Octavia won't start?

Hi, I have a 2007 Skoda Octavia. It has problems starting when cold. It can take up to six tries to get it going. I have changed the air flow meter. Any ideas what else should be checked?

Hi Pat,

You've not told us whether it's petrol or diesel. If diesel then definitely worth testing the glow plugs. That sounds like the most probable reason for this.

Tell us more about it if that doesn't help.

How reliable is the Opel Vectra?

How reliable is the 2005 model Opel Vectra SRi 1.9 CDTi 16v with 150hp?

Craig Nolan (Dublin)

Sep 2012 Filed under: reliability

Expert answer

Hi Craig,

Data is rarely available for specific models, but the Vectra has proven to be quite durable. The SRi specification with the 150hp engine is the pick of the line-up as well. However, we'd urge you to make sure the car has a full service history and check if it was the subject of a recall earlier in its life. The only major problem is with the suspension. If you test drive a car and it makes strange clonking noises then walk away.

Hope that helps.

What's the best engine in the Volkswagen Golf?

Which is the best all round engine in the Volkswagen Golf?

Expert answer

Hi John,

The most sensible for the majority of buyers is the 1.6 TDI 105hp. This is smooth, quiet, torquey enough to not feel slow and very economical.

Despite all that our preference would be the more expensive (and noisier) 2.0 TDI 140, as it feels substantially quicker.

Best bet is to test drive as many as possible, as you're bound to have a preference - within budget of course.

Hope that helps

What's the Mazda3 hatchback like?

I'm thinking of buying a 2010 1.6 d Mazda3 Sport five-door hatch. Is it any good and anything to look out for when testing?

David Lacey (Tipperary)

Expert answer

Hi David,

In general that's a good car to drive, well-equipped and highly reliable and economical. We found the 1.6-diesel engine a little loud and the car itself to emit a lot of road noise on the motorway, but they're not bad enough to be deal-breakers.

It's still too new for there to be meaningful reliability data, but in general Mazdas have a good reliability record. Ensure that it has been serviced according to the schedule and take it for as long a drive as you can.

Best of luck

Can you clarify the Dacia Duster pricing?

Hi, in your test drive you qoted Dacia Duster 4x4 at €14,900 for the 4x4. It's €18,900 I believe. Can you please clarify?

Stan Bytheway (Cork)

Sep 2012 Filed under: new car ordering

Expert answer

Hi Stan,

The price, as stated in the text of the article (€14,990) is a starting price for the line-up, not the 4x4 model. The sole four-wheel drive version, in Signature trim, costs €18,990.

Hope that makes things clearer.

What could an oil leak from a BMW X5 mean?

I just had an AA test for a 2006 BMW X5 with a view to purchase. The oral report from the AA tester noted oil around the transmission. I have yet to receive the written report but what could the oil be a sign of?

Paul Foxton (Dublin)

Expert answer

Hi Paul,

Without seeing the car for ourselves it's hard to say for sure. The gearbox itself could be leaking oil somehow, though it may also mean the failure of the rear crankshaft oil seal on the engine. Both of those are likely to be expensive repairs so make sure you get to the bottom of it before you buy the car.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi Martin,

Best place to start is www.dacia.ie, as it has a "Find a dealer" facility. We're informed that there are cars in all dealers right now for test drives.

Let us know how you get on.

In case you've not seen it, here's our first drive of the Dacia Duster on Irish roads.

What are the running costs for a Mercedes-Benz E 200?

What mileage per gallon would I get from a Mercedes-Benz E-Class 1.8-litre petrol automatic? Also, how much road tax would I have to pay?

Thank you

Patrick Oneill (Carlow)

Aug 2012 Filed under: fuel economy and emissions

Expert answer

Hi Patrick,

We assume you mean the latest Mercedes-Benz E 200 BlueEfficiency. With the seven-speed automatic gearbox this uses 6.5- to 6.9 litres/100km (43.4- to 40.9mpg) depending on the version. It's either Band C or D for tax (depending again on version), costing €330 or €481.

If you have a specific model in mind come back to us and we'll answer more precisely.

Is the Land Rover Discovery a better car than the Ford Galaxy?

Would I be silly trading an a 2011 Ford Galaxy Titanium X for 2010 Land Rover Discovery?

Catherine Connolly (Galway)

Aug 2012 Filed under: choosing used car

Expert answer

Hi Catherine,

That's an interesting one and the decision will probably come down to your personal preference. The Discovery certainly has a higher 'status' and it is a very good car, but a newer, highly specified Galaxy might be the logical choice. Both cars are relatively reliable and highly comfortable. The Galaxy has more space and probably more equipment, but that depends on the Discovery you're looking at.

One thing to be aware of is that the Discovery is likely to have higher running costs, from fuel, tyres, servicing and insurance to annual road tax.

Bear all that in mind and then take the Discovery for a good long test drive before you decide - and don't be tempted by 'too good to be true' prices either. Get a Cartell.ie history check to make sure there's nothing dodgy about the car you're considering.

Let us know how you get on.

What do you think of the new Dacia Duster?

Hi, I would like to know what do you think of the new Dacia Duster. I was thinking of buying one.

Patrick Collier (Newbridge)

Aug 2012 Filed under: choosing new car

Expert answer

Hi Patrick,

It makes a lot of sense for the money. It does everything that the likes of an entry-level Nissan Qashqai or Skoda Yeti does but for a way lower price. For its basic price you could only afford a three- to four-year old Qashqai for instance.

However, it isn't as impressive in terms of ambience as the established makers' cars. Neither is it as polished on the road.

Nevertheless, its running costs are low, equipment levels generous and of course it comes with a new car warranty...

Read Paul's first drive here for more, but if you have any specific questions please do come back to us.
