Hi Michael,

The engine size is 1,995cc, so it sits in the 1,901cc to 2,000cc band, currently costing €710 per annum.

Can I privately tax and insure this Transit?

Taxing a five-seat M-Sport Transit for private use. What will it cost and will insurers cover it?

Expert answer

Hi Paul,

I’m presuming that has the 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine? If so then it’s €710 a year to tax as a private car. As for insurance, yes you can insure it privately, but you might have to shop around a good bit. Some insurers are wary of such policies, but a good broker should be able to help you out.

Is pre-2008 tax for petrol and diesel different?

Hi.

Is there a difference in motor tax between petrol and diesel pre-2008 cars?

Dean Kinsella (Westport)

Hi Dean,

Not specifically. Pre-2008 motor tax is calculated on engine capacity, so there’s no direct distinction between petrol or diesel engines.

Motor tax on this imported Ford?

What would be the motor tax on a Titanium X 120hp five-door auto? The car is registered in the North and VRT is €7,998.

Expert answer

Hi Teresa,

Well, it’s a Ford of some kind, so I’m going assume, from that VRT amount, that it’s a Mondeo? That has CO2 emissions of 107g/km so will cost you €190 per year to tax.

Can I insure and tax a Caddy privately?

Can I insure a 1.9 Caddy and tax it privately?

Expert answer

Hi Shane,

Yes you can. The tax part is pretty simple — you just call into or phone your local motor tax office and let them know that you want to convert the van to private tax. With a 1.9-litre engine, you’ll pay €710 per year in motor tax. Insurance, to judge from the responses we’ve had from some readers, is a little more tricky, but is possible. You’ll probably have to do a good bit of phoning around, or possibly get in touch with a good local broker.

Can I get classic insurance on my Mercedes?

My Mercedes is nineteen years old; can I get classic insurance?

Michael Hogan (Dublin)

Hi Michael,

No, I’m afraid you can’t. In Ireland a car has to be at least 30 years old before it qualifies for classic (vintage, as it’s somewhat erroneously known) tax or insurance.

Is a newer petrol car cheaper to tax?

I have a 1990 Mercedes petrol car and the tax is expensive, if I bought a 2012 petrol car would the tax be cheaper?

Expert answer

Hi Pat,

Yup, such are the vagaries of the CO2-based tax system that we switched to in 2008. The idea was to reward those choosing vehicles with lower emissions, and that is often most starkly shown up when you start looking at older cars with larger engines versus newer models, which probably have much more power, but have smaller, more efficient engines. Of course there’s an argument that says that keeping an old car going, rather than buying a new one, is actually overall better for the environment, but that’s not going to wash with the tax authorities I’m afraid.

Taxes for a wheelchair user of a new van?

Hi,

I have to get a new car/van to use and transport my wheelchair . I have read your article on tax and I am wondering if I can buy a small van, i.e. Berlingo or such like, and what tax and charges would I be liable for please?

Expert answer

Hi Margaret,

In theory, as a disabled driver, you’re allowed to be exempted from, or able to receive a rebate of, both VRT and VAT on a new car purchase, and the VAT on any costs of conversion to suit your needs. However, right now while the tax relief scheme is not suspended, the issuing of Primary Medical Certificates is — thanks to a high court ruling that has thrown the system that assess people for PMCs into confusion. It’s hoped that the scheme will be back on track soon, but the short answer is that we don’t know when that will be.
