Hi Sally,

Generally speaking, automatics and small engines don't go well together, but there are a few good ones. Any Volkswagen Group cars using a combo of either 1.2 TSI or 1.4 TSI petrol with the DSG gearbox should be pretty smooth and there are some Toyota Auris 1.4 D-4D diesels around with self-shifters. The Auris, while not exciting, is certainly smooth and comfy.

Actually, your best option could be to go hybrid or electric. The Honda Insight has a 1.3-litre hybrid powertrain and is an automatic and is surprisingly good to drive. Or what about the Nissan Leaf? If the roughly 160km electric range suits your lifestyle, there's nothing smoother than an electric motor.


Petrol or diesel for a new Volkswagen Golf?

I am hoping to buy a new Volkswagen Golf, but I am not sure which of the three engines below to select:

1 - petrol 1.2 (110hp)

2 - petrol 1.4 (150hp)

3 - diesel 1.6 (110hp)

I am originally from Kerry, but living in Dublin. I cycle to work every day, so I would only use the car to go to the shops, the gym or meet friends during the week or the weekends. I go home to Kerry at least once or twice a month and I also go to Cork every now and then as I have family down there. So pretty much every second or third weekend I am on the motorway. Dublin - Kerry - Dublin is around 600km, and Dublin - Cork - Dublin is around 530km.

Would love your advice.

Hi Bryan,

Go for the petrol 1.2 TSI. If most of your mileage is short hops then, even with a regular motorway run, you're not going to get the benefit from diesel. And a 1.2, driven with reasonable care, should get close to 50mpg on the motorway anyway. Plus, you'll save a good chunk of money at purchase time, which will easily outweigh any potential diesel fuel savings. 


Should we go for a new Kia Sportage?

I was wondering if it would be a wise move to trade in our old Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate 1.8 petrol for the brand new Kia Sportage 1.7 diesel. I was very impressed by the high spec model in the showroom.

Diesel Focus or petrol Golf? Help!

I'm looking at a 2014 Ford Focus 1.6 diesel Titanium or a 2013 Volkswagen Golf 1.2 turbo petrol. What should I buy? I don't do a lot of miles, just drive around town. So confused.

Hi Catriona,

Go for the petrol Golf. It's a hugely economical engine anyway, but if you're doing short hops and low mileage then there's just no point in buying a diesel. You'll never make back the extra purchase price in fuel savings and you'll run into problems with clogged diesel particulate filters, etc.

Worth importing a van for private use?

Hi,

I'm looking at importing a Volkswagen T5 or 2006-2007 SWB Kombi, 2.0 TDI diesel, windows and seats in the back with no bulkhead. First thing is, can I tax and insure it privately? Secondly, could I buy a commercial van in Ireland, remove the bulkhead, add rear windows and seats and tax and insure privately for roughly same price as import?

Hi Brian,

Yes, you can tax and insure it privately, and indeed you should do because if it were taxed as a commercial, you'd be caught rotten if you were stopped with the kids in the back and it's a €4,000 fine. However, you can legally have it assessed for VRT as a commercial so that's a saving. The odd thing is that taxing it as a private car means, under the current rules, you'll revert to the old pre-2008 tax system, which is based on engine capacity. Odd, but there you go.

As for whether or not an import will be cheaper, it probably depends on how many of the specific style of T5 you want are available on the ground here. All I can suggest is that you do your sums, figure out how much the import will cost, and then have a shop around Irish dealers and ask them if they can match the numbers.


Tell me when to change my Mondeo's belt.

I have a 2012 Ford Mondeo 1.6 diesel Econetic that has 100,000 miles on the clock. I have read conflicting advice on when the timing belt should be replaced on this vehicle. They range from 100k miles right up to 200k miles. This is quite a massive difference so can you advise what would be the correct time to get this work done on this make of vehicle please?

Hi Paul,

It’s best to take the advice of your local Ford dealer on this, but as far as we can tell the correct interval is every 10 years or 210,000km, whichever is soonest. However, it’s one of those things that, if it’s niggling you, you should just get done. Never a good idea to put a timing belt on the long finger.


Is the Land Cruiser getting a Fiat engine?

I've been told that the new Toyota Land Cruiser will have a 2.8-litre Fiat engine. Is there any truth in this? I know it's changing from its 3.0-litre engine to the 2.8, but I'm just wondering who makes the new engine?

Hi Dave,

The Land Cruiser is indeed getting a new 2.8-litre diesel engine, which is claimed to be nine per cent more efficient than the old 3.0. It has CO2 emissions of 194g/km, 177hp and 420Nm of torque. Shared with Fiat though? No - Fiat does have its own 2.8-litre diesel, but it's a commercial vehicle engine, usually used in the Ducato van. For its passenger cars (Jeep Grand Cherokee, Maserati Quattroporte, etc.) the Fiat group uses a VM Motori built 3.0 V6 diesel.

Hi Darren,

We checked this with Toyota Ireland. Here's the response:

"The 2011 Avensis D-4D has a DPF. C2 is a low ash oil - it must be used with the DPF. Any Toyota Dealer Parts dept. can supply this oil. Once it's a C2 grade it is fine."
