Looking to buy a compact automatic car...
I am looking to buy an automatic small car as my first car. My partner has a small manual Toyota Aygo and we think it would make sense for my car to be bigger/or with a bigger engine anyway so that we can use it for longer journeys and have the Aygo for around the city (Dublin).
We have been looking between years of 2012-2018 at the Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, MINI Cooper, Volkswagen Polo/Golf, Audi A1 and Hyundai i20/i30... but we are stuck and getting more and more confused...
We were leaning towards the Peugeot/Renault because of great prices/low mileage but we don't know what to do.
Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Dawn,
Most people in your position – i.e. a new driver – consider the cost of insurance when choosing their first car. You'll need to keep the engine size down for that reason, though there are plenty of small-engined cars that should still fit the bill. Just keep it in mind and maybe get insurance quotes before you commit to any car.
I would suggest that you're better off going for a slightly larger car if it's to be used regularly for longer journeys as they are generally more comfortable at motorway speeds. From your list, the VW Golf and Hyundai i30 would be good options, but you could also seek out the SEAT Leon, Peugeot 308 or Mazda3.
I've probably given you more to think about there…

You've not told us which car you are referring to, but we suspect it's a Stellantis one with an automatic gearbox. The "m" in that case would allow the driver to select a manual gearchanging mode and they change gears via paddles behind the steering wheel.

Revenue does run a tax-relief scheme for vehicles adapted for drivers and passengers with disabilities, but the Government has confirmed that this does not apply to public service vehicles such as taxis or hackneys, wheelchair-accessible or not. In other words, a wheelchair-accessible taxi is not automatically free of VAT and VRT.
What you can benefit from is the National Transport Authority's Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) Grant Scheme, which offers a cash grant towards the cost of buying or converting a wheelchair-accessible taxi or hackney. That grant doesn't remove VAT or VRT, but it can significantly reduce the overall cost to you – by up to €17,500 depending on the age of the vehicle.

Do I need a Single Administrative Document for importing?
Ever hear of anyone needing SAD (Single Administrative Document) for the VRT centre when you arrive with the car to prove taxes paid to be exempt from VAT and import duty? It's a 242 Honda CR-V from the UK, shipped under the Windsor framework via NI and have HMRC Supplementary Declaration and the V5C.

The Single Administrative Document (SAD) is the standard EU customs declaration form. It records the details of goods being imported or exported and proves that customs obligations (VAT, duty, etc.) have been met.
For cars coming from Great Britain into Northern Ireland, a SAD is generated automatically when the HMRC Supplementary Declaration is completed through the Trader Support Service (TSS). Most buyers never see it, but Revenue can request a copy if they want extra proof that a vehicle has cleared customs correctly.
In most cases you won't need to show an SAD when presenting the car for a VRT inspection. Revenue usually accepts the HMRC Supplementary Declaration together with the V5C as proof that the car was lawfully imported into Northern Ireland and is in free circulation under the Windsor Framework.
If the car's paperwork was processed by a customs agent, they can electronically submit the SAD on your behalf, as it should already exist given the HMRC Supplementary Declaration has already been processed.
How much to tax a Ford Ranger 2.0 privately?
I'm thinking of buying a Ford Ranger Wildtrak (2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel, 205hp, 10-speed automatic).
I would like to know what it costs to tax this privately. I know if you have a VAT number or herd number it's €333. I have been to three different Ford garages and got three different answers.
a) It falls into tax band with CO2 of 171-190g/km, which is €790 a year;
b) It falls into 191-225g/km, which is €1,250 a year and;
c) It has a 2.0-litre engine which costs €710 a year to tax

I can confirm that, if you tax a commercial vehicle privately as described here, the rate is determined by the engine size, so, for an engine of 1,901-2,000cc, the rate is indeed €710 a year.

Hi Linda,
Assuming you mean the head gasket (there are loads of different gaskets in a car's engine), we'd have to know the year and full engine detalis before we could look up how long that work would take in any given car.
Even then, we couldn't hope to give you an accurate price as every garage charges its own labour rate and even the price of the parts will vary considerably depending on where they are bought.
Suffice to say that it is a large job that will likely be somewhere between €1,000 and €2,000.

Go to https://www.mlit.go.jp/jidosha/jidosha_fr10_000019.html (and use a browser that will automatically translate it from Japanese to English for you) and scroll down to item 6 and get Excel files full of information for loads of JDM cars. Those hold engine codes, etc, fuel consumption and CO2 data.
We found several entries for the Toyota you mentioned, with CO2 varying from 173-187g/km depending on the specific version of car.
If you're importing this car, Revenue will likely take the official NEDC CO2 figure for the European market and 'uplift' it to WLTP standards, meaning that even the automatic model will likely be in Band F (191-225g/km), while the manual may be in Band G (226g/km and higher).
Will I swap my Velar for a Nissan Qashqai?
I am currently driving a 2021 Range Rover Velar PHEV, which I bought new. It has only covered 8,500 miles to date. It's in perfect condition. Silver metallic paintwork, with black top and it also has a full fixed-glass roof with automatic blind.
I was thinking of changing for a Nissan Qashqai e-Power hybrid, or a Mazda MX-30 with the petrol engine to charge the battery. This seems to be a big improvement on the original launch model which had a very limited range.
I may be moving to an apartment which does not have a car-charging facility, and I am not quite ready to go fully electric yet.
I have a buyer interested in my Velar and I was wondering what value you would put on it, if I was to sell privately, and purchase the new car in a straight deal?

Hi Patrick,
First up, if you're not going to be able to charge a car up at home, we'd recommend you do not buy the MX-30. Yes, it's much improved with the 'range-extender' engine on board, but it's still a car designed to be plugged in and charged up. Without that, it would be a very frustrating petrol car with a tiny fuel tank. Read our review of the MX-30 R-EV here if you're still interested.
We're big fans of the Qashqai e-Power. It feels very like an EV at times to drive, giving you a flavour for that, yet you don't plug it in to charge it up. There are 2021 examples of the plug-in hybrid Velar in the classifieds varying from about €49,000 to as high as €75,000, though none are as low-mileage as your car, so that will help get a strong price for sure. That €75,000 example is an anomaly though so bank on somewhere slightly north of €50,000.

Hi John,
You've not mentioned which gearbox specifically, so we'll assume you mean the DSG automatic. These can develop faults with the 'mechatronic' unit that controls gear shifting etc. If that has to be replaced then it's expensive, though sometimes just changing the transmission fluid helps.
That needs to be done regularly in DSG units using the 'wet-clutch' setup. Those with the dry-clutch system don't need such maintenance.
If you've thinking about buying a car using a DSG transmission, then make sure you take it for a decent test drive through the full speed range up to motorway speeds and monitor the gear changing for judders or other issues. If possible, spend some time in stop-start traffic as well as that can cause the clutch packs and mechatronic unit to overheat if they are weak and you'll soon notice if something isn't right.
Saying all this, the DSG transmissions aren't necessarily bad designs, you just need to ensure the one you're buying is still operating properly.
