Does an Opel Vectra have a timing belt?
Does a 2004 Opel Vectra Estate have a timing belt or chain?

Expert answer
Hi Austin,
You didn't specify the engine so here are the possibilities:
1.6 petrol 100hp: has a timing belt, to be changed every 90,000km or six years
1.8 petrol 122hp/110hp or 118hp dual fuel: same as above
1.9 diesel 120hp: has a timing belt, to be changed every 120,000km or six years
1.9 diesel 150hp: has a timing belt, to be changed every 100,000km or ten years
2.0 diesel 100hp: has a timing chain
2.0 turbo petrol 175hp: has a timing chain
2.2 diesel 125hp/117hp: has a timing chain
2.2 petrol: has a timing chain
There were larger engines again in the Vectra, but we doubt you have one of those as they are very rare.
Why is the Opel Cora more expensive than the Meriva?
Is the 2004-2005 Opel Meriva a good car? I find it strange that the smaller Oper Corsa (of same year/mileage) is more expensive in the classifieds.
Maria Ferrari (Sligo)Jul 2013 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Maria,
The simple reason for Merivas being worth less is that they're just not as in demand as the mechanically similar Corsa. The Corsa has always been popular with learner drivers and first time car owners so its values hold up. The Meriva, as a compact MPV, just isn't as popular so its prices are softer.
As for reliability, like all Opels it's decently well made, but being a mass-market car, there are issues. The most serious of which is a persistent power steering failure, which prompted a recall, so make sure any car you're looking at has had that done. Other than that, watch for fuzzy engine management systems, broken turbos on the diesel models, fragile cabin trim and timing chains that need too much attention at low mileages.
Hope that all helps
How reliable is the 2008 Opel Combo?
How reliable is the 2008 Opel Combo 1.3 diesel?
Robert Lindsay (Sligo)Jul 2013 Filed under: reliability
Expert answer
Hi Robert,
A very solidly built van, the Combo, and that Fiat-GM 1.3 diesel is long-lived and has been around long enough to have had most of the kinks worked out. Just watch for timing belt guides shifting out of position, leading to possible belt failure, and the exhaust gas recirculation valve in the turbo getting sticky.
Hope that helps
Opel Corsa or Ford Focus?
I'm thinking of buying a 2002 Opel Corsa 1.2 for €1,800. What are they like? I have also looked at a 2002 Ford Focus Zetec 1.4 and it's not bad for 1,500 Euro. Any advice?

Expert answer
Hi Catherine,
Of the two, I'd go for the Focus. Bigger, much better to drive and barely any less economical in day-to-day driving. That generation Corsa was pretty crude, really - noisy and not especially nice to drive.
They're both pretty robust though, which is good, although you should check the Focus carefully for underbody rust as some early cars had very poor weather sealing.

Would the Opel Combo suit my business?
Is the 1.2 diesel engine in the Opel Combo too small to carry loads? I was going to invest in a Ford Transit Connect. Please give your thoughts.
Karl Simpson (Dublin)Jul 2013 Filed under: commercial vehicle
Expert answer
Hi Karl,
No, the 1.2 (actually it's a 1.3 really) diesel in the Opel Combo is the same unit that Opel co-developed with Fiat, so it should have either 75- or 90hp and plenty of torque. Clearly, a larger engine means you can haul larger payloads, but unless you're a gym weights delivery company, you should be OK.
Opel Insignia for €12,000 - worth it?
With a budget of €12,000 is a 2009 Opel Insignia a good buy?
Ciaran Cotter (CORK)Jul 2013 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Ciaran,
Yes. We like the Insignia and it does a pretty good impression of an Audi A4 for a lot less money. As with any long-run mass-produced car, keep an eye out for faults and while the Insignia is well built, gearbox and steering issues are not unheard of. The 2.0-litre CDTi diesel engine is the best one to go for, especially in ECOFlex form as it's in Band A for road tax and if you can track down one of the gorgeous and practical estates. you're on to a winner.

What diesel car will I trade in my Mazda3 for?
I'd like to trade in my 2007 Mazda3 1.6 petrol and change to a diesel engine. Fuel economy and lower tax would be important as I cover around 360 miles a week mostly motorway driving. I'd like a roomier car in the back for two children and a bigger boot. Was thinking of a diesel car or SUV. What would my Mazda3 be worth on trade-in?
Alanna Mangan (Newbridge)Jun 2013 Filed under: choosing new car
Expert answer
Hi Alanna,
Anything pre-2008 with a petrol engine is pretty hard to shift on these days, sadly, so I'd reckon you're looking at a value of possibly as little as €5,500 for the Mazda3 at the moment. To get the best from it, I'd suggest staying within the Mazda family (a Mazda dealer will usually give you a better trade-in on a Mazda than will another dealer) and trade up to a Mazda6 Estate. Loads of space, brilliant to drive, reliable and, with the 2.2-litre 129hp diesel, very economical too. SUV? Do you live up a mountain or at the far end of a rutted dirt road? No? Then you don't need one - stick to the family car market and the Mazda6 size class (which also includes cars like the Toyota Avensis, Ford Mondeo, Volkswagen Passat and Opel Insignia) is where you'll get the best bang for your buck.

Which new cars are easy to get into?
I have a bad back and I find it very difficult getting into small cars like the Volkswagen Polo/Golf etc. I am looking to buy a new car/SUV that will be doing mostly urban/extra urban driving. I know it's a tough ask, but I am looking for something that is easy to get into and that will return decent mpg.

Hi Vincent,
Not that tough, these days actually. Would you consider an Opel Mokka? Not the greatest car ever made or anything but it has a higher seating position, which may help and, better still, its front seats are approved of by the Aktion Gesunder Rucken, which is the German Bad Back Association. If you don’t fancy the Mokka, I too am a bad back sufferer and I always found that the seats in the Citroen C3 Picasso were always very comfy. Worth a try at any rate.
Here are the reviews:
How economical is the petrol Opel Zafira?
I have been offered at a very good price a 2001 Opel Zafira: low mileage. very clean, engine looks and sounds good and very dry, i.e. no sign of oil. No NCT, thouhg assured that with two new back tyres and a back window wiper it will pass.
My question is, how are these cars on petrol?
Bill Heffernan (Gorey)Expert answer
Hi Bill,
Is that the 1.8-litre engine? If so, then it had an official fuel economy figure of 32mpg. I say ‘had’ because that’s a 16-year-old car and a huge amount is going to depend on how well it’s been looked after. Generally speaking, I’d say that you should expect around 25mpg from it around town, and maybe 35mpg on a longer run.

Hi Eddie,
Our latest review of an Opel Insignia is here. As you can see, we awarded it 3.5 stars out of five. It's not a bad car in the least, but if buying new there are loads of talented alternatives at the same price (and a facelifted Insignia arrives in 2014).
Do a search above for 'Insignia' and you'll see we've helped many buyers choose between it and other vehicles, but if you're trying to make that decision please do come back for more assistance.
