Looking for family car for about €17,000...

Looking to buy a five-seat family car with a budget of around €17k. The car will be used mostly for short journey commutes with some long journeys. Currently have 2004 SEAT Alhambra 1.9 TDI. Do about 12 to 13k a year so looking for something reliable and fairly roomy.

Hi Leo,

It kind of depends on how big your kids are and what kind of car seats they need. If you need three individual seats in the back, I’d recommend something like a VW Golf SV or a similar mid-size MPV. Or you could go for another Alhambra of course — it’s a great car.

I’m assuming you want a change from the Alhambra though, and, MPVs in general, so how about a medium-sized estate? Lots of space, roomy back seat, but smoother and more agile to drive, with better fuel economy. How about a Skoda Superb Combi? Vast boot, massive back seat for packing the kids in and one of the nicest cars on the road.

Is this common on Dacia Dusters?

Hi guys,

I am buying a Dacia Duster 162 reg from the UK and the garage says it has to repair a motor for the window washer; is this common?

Cheers

Hi Brian,

We've not heard of a widespread problem with the window washer motor on the Duster so this could be an isolated case. Not really a major worry, especially if it is being sorted before you get the car.

How much to tax a 2.0-litre hybrid?

What road tax would I pay if I buy a 2.0-litre hybrid saloon car?

Thank you

Expert answer

Hi Margaret,

It depends entirely precisely which 2.0-litre hybrid saloon you’re talking about, as the tax system is based on the CO2 emissions of the vehicle concerned. That said, if memory serves, the only 2.0-litre hybrid saloon currently on sale is the Ford Mondeo Hybrid. That has CO2 emissions that range from 126g/km to 140g/km (depending on what equipment is fitted) so you’ll pay between €270 and €280 a year in motor tax.

What's the 1.2 petrol Qashqai like?

I am looking at the 1.2 N Connecta Nissan Qashqai from 2017 and was wondering what you thought of the engine? Is the car relatively big for a smallish engine?

Expert answer

Hi Lee,

It depends on what sort of driving you’re doing. If you’re a low-mileage driver, and doing mostly short hops in and around town, then it’s about perfect. If you’re into doing longer journeys, then it’s not quite so good as it can get a little thirsty on motorway runs.

How much to register imported Ford Galaxy?

If I was to import a car from the UK and it was a 2007 Ford Galaxy with the OMSP of €2,928 with mileage of 72,360 leading to a rate of VRT at 28% making that VRT payable at €819, how would I go about finding the total cost of registering the vehicle in Ireland?

Expert answer

Hi David,

Well, basically you take that VRT cost of €819 and add it to the money you’ve actually paid for the Galaxy, converted into Euro. On top of that, there’s the NCTS fee for having the vehicle inspected (€55), the cost of a year’s motor tax (that will depend on the engine that’s in the car) and the cost of getting new number plates made up and fitted (shouldn’t be more than €30 or thereabouts).

Any reduction in motor tax with age?

I have a Mercedes C 200, which is now just over 20 years old and I only do 1,500 miles per year. Is there any reduction in motor tax due to age?

Hi John,

I'm afraid that cars need to be over 30 years old to avail of classic tax. See our Motor Road Tax Prices in Ireland Explained feature for more details.

Can you export the California to the US?

Do you know or offer the service to export a left-hand-drive VW California camper to the US? I have heard via the rumourmill that it may be possible to do this if it is the camper model and classified and US titled as an ‘RV’.

Thank you,

Steve

Hi Steve,

I’m going to say probably not, but this is an utter minefield and you’ll probably get a dozen different answers from as many people. The problem is that Volkswagen doesn’t sell the California, or any current T6 Transporter variant, in the US, so you’d have to try and get it past the personal import regulations. If, for any reason, the car can’t pass those tests, then there’s no appeals process, at least not as I understand it. You can import it temporarily as a tourist, but it would have to be re-exported again within 12 months.

Most economical 1.4-litre cars?

What is the most economical 1.4 petrol or diesel car in Ireland, max 2015?

Ed Burke (Cork)

Jul 2019 Filed under: fuel economy and emissions

Expert answer

Hi Ed,

That is an answer that will vary massively depending on which model of car you’re talking about. There are some Hyundai i30s and Kia Ceeds from around that era that came with a 1.4 diesel engine that would be hugely economical. You might be able to track down some Peugeot or Citroen models (a 2008 would be a good choice) with a 1.4 HDi diesel engine that’s good on juice, too. There’s also the Toyota Corolla or Auris D-4D, or if you don’t fancy diesel, the same cars with the 1.33-litre VVTi petrol engine, which was not too thirsty.

Audi A3 Saloon or Mercedes CLA?

Hi,

I am looking for a little advice on changing my car. I have a 2010 Audi A3 Sportback 1.6 TDI and am trying to make my mind up between the Audi A3 Saloon and the Mercedes CLA. Petrol I'm thinking? And most likely new or one year old. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Expert answer

Hi Claire,

Both are really good cars, and I think it would be the Audi that we’d — just — come down on the side of. It’s not as cool to look at as the CLA, obviously, but the ride quality is better and that makes a big difference on Irish roads. It’s also a fraction more practical than the Mercedes and, if you can find one with the excellent 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine, then you’re onto a winner. Basically, it’s the Audi if you want practicality, or the Mercedes if you’re more interested in style.

My Honda's satnav is overheating!

The built-in satnav in my 2004 Honda CR-V is overheating, stopping it from working. How can I check if the fan is working?

Hi Patricia,

That sounds like a specialised job for someone familiar with the workings of the satnav system. A Honda dealer or good auto electrician are your best bets.
