Which cheap EV to get on the scrappage scheme?

Hello,

I've an 18-year-old Suzuki and am very interested in the new EV scrappage scheme. I'm looking at the Renault 5, the BYD Dolphin Surf or the Volkswagen Polo. Which would you recommend?

Hi Val,

I'm afraid we can't comment with authority on the new VW ID. Polo as yet as we've not driven it, but I'd be surprised if it's actually available for July delivery in Ireland. All we've seen so far is its entry-level price, which is impressive, but we're hearing that the cheapest model will be significantly pared-back in terms of equipment, so I'd urge you to wait and see what is included in the price – unless of course you're willing to spend a good bit more on a properly specified one.

The BYD and Renault we know well. The Dolphin Surf is, at the time of writing, the most affordable new EV on the market, at under €18,000, and it's perfectly fine.

The Renault 5 E-Tech electric is more expensive, but it's a vastly different car. It drives like a larger, more expensive model, has a superb interior and will paint a smile on your face every time you look at it.

I highly recommend you organise test drives as soon as you can so you can form your own preferences. And do drop us a message to let us know what you decide on.
