How much to import a crew-cab from the North?

How much will it cost to bring a Renault Trafic crew cab six-seater from the North of Ireland?

The big issue is whether Revenue treats the Renault Trafic crew cab as a Category B commercial or a Category A passenger vehicle. It should be the former, but you really should check that with Revenue for yourself before proceeding.

If it qualifies as Category B, the VRT should usually be 13.3 per cent of Revenue's OMSP (Open Market Selling Price) valuation, as most diesel Trafics will be over 120g/km CO₂. As a guide, that would mean about €2,660 VRT on an OMSP €20,000 or about €3,990 on an OMSP of €30,000. Remember that the OMSP is the value Revenue places on the vehicle after it is registered in Ireland, which won't be the same thing as what you pay for it in the North.

However, because it is a six-seat crew cab, Revenue will look carefully at the layout and classification. If it is treated as Category A instead, the VRT could be far higher, and a NOx levy could also apply.

Separately, if it is being bought in Northern Ireland, make sure there is proof that it was used in NI or legally imported into NI. Without that, Irish VAT and customs duty could also become an issue.
