Expert answer

Hi Colm,

They're three very different, relatively affordable electric cars.

The Hyundai is by far the more affordable of the trio, starting at €19,595, though you could spend €25,745 on the stylish Cross model as well. There are several other options in the lineup if you want more equipment and the best interior.

For that starting price you get a 42kWh battery, 327km of range and a 97hp electric motor, while the 49kWh battery is available from €23,095, giving the Inster a 370km range, faster DC charging and a 115hp motor.

At that price level, the Citroen E-C3 comes into play – from €22,455 including incentives – though that's for the entry-level version using a 30kWh battery for a range of only 209km. Spend €24,130 and you get a 44kWh battery and 325km of range. Both models get a 113hp electric motor.

The Renault 5 E-Tech electric is more expensive than both, with a starting price of €25,995 for the 40kWh model for a 310km range and 120hp. The 52kWh battery costs from €28,995 though brings with it a 410km range and a 150hp motor for much more performance.

Those are the bare numbers, showing that the Hyundai and Citroen are roughly comparable, but the Renault above them. If you're choosing between the first pair, we'd suggest you check them out in person, not only to get a feel for how they drive, but also to appreciate just how versatile the interior of the Inster is. We'd have it over the Citroen for sure.

As you'd hope given its higher price, the Renault feels like a step up from the other two. It has an excellent interior, it looks fantastic and it drives in a deeply satisfying way. If you have the budget and it's big enough for your needs, then it's the one to go for here.
