Does Toyota sell the petrol RAV4 with four-wheel drive?
Is it possible to get a 4x4 petrol Toyota RAV4 in Ireland?
Nessa Kenny (Dublin)Nov 2013 Filed under: choosing new car
Expert answer
Hi Nessa,
Yes it is. In fact, in the latest generation RAV4, it doesn't appear possible to get a front-wheel drive only petrol RAV4. The 2.0-litre petrol 'Valvematic' model with AWD (all-wheel drive) starts at €33,830. Full details on Toyota's own website.
Hope that helps
Toyota RAV4 or Volkswagen Tiguan?
I am looking to change my three-door Audi A3 for a four-door car. I'm looking at Volkswagen Tiguan or Toyota RAV4 (2008/9). I have a dog so need the extra room. Any comments?
Thanks

Hi Patsi,
Go for the Tiguan. It's a really sweet car and much more refined and pleasant to drive than that generation of RAV4. One thing to watch; the boot on the Tiguan is a little on the small side, so bring your dog along for a test drive to make sure that he/she is comfy in the back.

Should I get my car checked by a garage before its NCT?
Are you meant to bring your car to a garage before your NCT to see if there's anything wrong with it or do you bring it for the NCT and then fix what needs to be fixed and resit the NCT?
Say if you brought it to the garage before would they check it for everything the way they would in the NCT or would they just check for what are the most popular reasons for failure? Because if that's the case wouldn't you be better to get the NCT first to see what's wrong if they do a more detail inspection?

Expert answer
Hi Niamh,
Doning an NCT is like going to the dentist; no-one wants to do it and it always ends up costing more than it should. Nonetheless, it's necessary every couple of years.
Much like going to the dentist, the result of your NCT will have more to do with how you've been looking after things over a long period. Bringing your car in for a service just before the test is rather like breaking out the mouthwash and floss just before visiting the mouth doctor. It's not going to fix any underlying problems.
It also depends on how thorough your garage is and whether or not you've told them you're going for an NCT. A good garage, properly informed, should check and re-check everything that's necessary to ensure a pass, but even then, the NCT test is both thorough and inflexible - the smallest issue could trip you up. In that sense, it's probably better, if a little more long-winded, to go for the test and then get everything that's flagged up sorted. Yes, it will be expensive, but you'll have to make the repairs anyway.
But ultimately, we're back to the dentist metaphor again. Looking after your car on a daily basis is what will ensure you a pass.
Volvo V60 D4 or Skoda Octavia RS TDI?
How does the new Volvo V60 D4 compare to the Skoda Octavia RS diesel?
Philip Donegan (Ballina)Oct 2013 Filed under: choosing new car
Expert answer
Hi Philip,
The Octavia RS is a much sportier car overall with a more driver-focused chassis (though firmer and less comfortable). However, the new D4 Volvo engine is superior in every way (assuming you mean the new 181hp four-cylinder one tested here).
So, personally, I would have the Skoda look, spec and chassis, but the Volvo engine and running costs!
Depends what's important to you...
What is meant by 'notchy' gears?
What is meant by notchy gears? I met this notchy gears word while reading a report on a Nissan Micra.
Pandurang Nadgauda (Kolhapur)Oct 2013 Filed under: gearbox
Expert answer
Hi Pandurang,
'Notchy' isn't a real word, which is why I discourage our writers from using it, though most of the large publishers allow it so it has become very commonplace.
It means there's some resistance in the gear change like moving the lever past a notch. In truth some like it and others don't. Best bet is to always test a car for yourself.
Hope that's of help?
What's the BMW 318d GT like?
I made a mistake - the car I wanted an opinion on was a BMW 318d GT Luxury. What extras do you think worthwhile?
Patrick Rice (Greystones)Oct 2013 Filed under: choosing new car
Expert answer
Hi Patrick,
In terms of an opinion on the 3 Series GT, I can do no better than direct you to our first drive of the car carried out by our very own Kyle Fortune. You can find it here.
As for the 318d specifically, well it might feel a touch underpowered in a car that size, so you may want to consider upgrading to a 320d. As for extras, my previous comments about leather and hi-fi still stand and for the GT you might want to consider adding the optional panoramic roof.
Hope that all helps
Should I replace my Corolla with a Golf or Octavia?
I bought an 09 Toyota Corolla 1.4 petrol with 64,000km on the clock three months ago. It is still covered by the dealer's one-year warranty, is taxed until July 2014 and NCT'ed until July 2015. Since then, I have changed job and will now be commuting two hours a day on the motorway and so need to change for a diesel. Even though I'm generally the only one in the car, I prefer saloons and like a big car around me, partly for safety reasons. I also want a comfortable, hi-spec, economical car. And as I will be putting a lot of miles on it, I want something with low mileage. I am thinking a diesel Volkswagen Golf or a Skoda Octavia.
Have test driven the Ford Focus and Hyundai i30 and the interior put me off. Maybe I was driving the basic models but found them to be quite cheap in feel. I am trying to keep the total spend to about €2,000 to €4,000 with my own for trade-in.
First of all, am I on the right track in the types of cars I am looking at for what I want? Secondly, how much should I roughly be expecting to get for my own car?
Grainne Callanan (Kilkenny)Oct 2013 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Grainne,
I'd say you can expect to get about €8,000 and €9,000 as a trade-in value for your Corolla, although that could vary quite a bit from dealer to dealer. As for the cars you're looking at, a diesel Golf or Octavia would probably be ideal for the type of driving you're looking at doing, but if it's refinement you need, then I'd go for the Volkswagen over the Skoda - there's not a lot in it, but the Golf is that bit quieter.
Hope that helps
How economical is the Toyota Corolla diesel?
What is the average mpg of the 1.4 Toyota Corolla?
John Dr Oog (Cork)Expert answer
Hi John,
It just so happens that I've got the latest 1.4 diesel Toyota Corolla on test this week. Over half a tank it has averaged 5.4 litres/100km (52.3mpg). The car had two to three people in it most of the time over a variety of roads and speeds, though no long motorway journey. That's not bad going. For reference, Toyota Ireland quotes a combined cycle figure of 3.9 litres/100km (72.4mpg) for the Luna model we have on test.
Hope that helps
What will I replace by old SEAT Leon with?
How much should I get for my 2004 SEAT Leon 1.9 TDI with about 130,000 miles on the clock, in great condition and full service history, new timing belt etc. And what should I replace it with? I do a bit of driving for work. I also love the Leon! Looking for reliable and cost friendly car.
Thanks so much
Au Considine (Ennis)Oct 2013 Filed under: used car values
Expert answer
Hi Au,
In terms of trade in, you're probably only looking at a value of around €1,500 or so. You might just break the €2,000 barrier if you try and sell it privately, but selling private is never easy. If you love your Leon then can I simply suggest trading up to a newer one? If you go for a 2009-on second generation Leon, with the 1.6 TDI diesel engine, then you'll have a superbly economical car that will cost you only €200 a year to tax. You already know how robust and reliable SEATs are, so I don't need to remind you of that, but it's worth pointing out that the second-gen Leon was better to drive and more spacious than your current car. My dad has had three now and won't have anything else, so that recommendation is as good as it comes.
Mind you, it could be worth holding fire for a week. The Budget's coming up next week, and there's just a chance that the Society of the Irish Motor Industry's (SIMI) 'Swappage' plan, to give those trading in six-year-old-or-older cars €2,000 off the price of a new one could get approved, and if so then it may be worth trading up to an all-new Leon, which is simply one of the best cars out there. It's even, whisper it, a bit nicer than the Volkswagen Golf...
What's the SsangYong Rexton like for family transport?
Hi lads. What do you think of a 2007 SsangYong Rexton as a family mode of transport? Also how safe and reliable are they? Im looking at one with 50,000 miles on it.
Thanks
Justin McElwee (Galway)Oct 2013 Filed under: family car
Expert answer
Hi Justin,
In reliability terms, there doesn't seem to be much to worry about. The Rexton is one of those rare cars that's never been recalled for a manufacturing fault and the ancient Mercedes-based turbodiesel engines are long-lived and simple, mechanically speaking. Likewise, even though the cabin looks and feels cheap, it seems to be well screwed together.
The problems though are two-fold. One, the Rexton really is very crude. In terms of engine noise, performance, handling, ride quality and just about everything, it feels at least a generation, sometimes more, behind the best of the European, Japanese and Korean rivals. And sadly, we can't give you too many pointers on safety. The Rexton has never been crash-tested by EuroNCAP so we have no objective data on it, crash-wise. You pays your money, you takes your chances...
