Is motor tax going up in 2020?

Is motor tax going up in 2020 before the budget? I have a 1.4 Skoda Octavia.

Hi Gerry,

No, motor tax hasn’t been changed for 2020, so you’ll pay the same as last year. The only change to the tax system is the introduction of the new NOx emissions tax, but that only applies if you’re buying a new car or importing a used car from abroad.

Extra NOx levy for imported Mokka?

Hi,

I've just bought a 2014 Mokka Techline CDTi (120g/km) and just heard about the NOx levy; what should I expect to pay extra on top of €1,680 VRT? Help, as I'm registering it on Jan 6.

Thank you

Expert answer

Hi Lynn,

It’s not going to be cheap I’m afraid. According to the best figures we can find, a 2014 1.7 CDTi Opel/Vauxhall Mokka has NOx emissions of 133mg/km. On the new NOx tax of €5 per mg for the first 60mg, €15 per mg between 60 and 80mg and €25 per mg above that, you’re looking at a NOx tax cost of €1,925 ON TOP of the normal VRT cost (which is going to be around €1,700 or so).

Cost to tax a 2010 Transit privately?

Hi.

Can you tell me what it will cost me to tax a 2010 Ford Transit 2.2-litre diesel? I want to tax it privately as I am not self employed and can’t avail of the commercial tax of €333. I’m an electrician if that makes any difference but like I say I want to tax it privately as I don’t have a VAT number. Also will I be able to insure it privately?

Expert answer

Hi Eoin,

Well, to tax a 2.2 Transit as a private car will cost you €950 a year, but the good news is that you don’t need a VAT number to be able to tax a van as a commercial. You simply have to fill out a Goods Only Declaration form (find it here: http://www.dublincity.ie/sites/default/files/content//Documents/Application_Forms/Roads_and_Traffic/Motor Tax/RF111A_ENG.pdf) and for that you only need your income tax registration number and get it witnessed at your local Garda station.

Why different tax for these Zafiras?

Hi!

I can't understand something. How come my Opel Zafira 161 is in the €570 tax band and a 141 is in the €280 tax band? The two cars are identical.

Hi Tamas,

Well, it depends on which version of Zafira each one is. From the detail you’ve given there on the tax costs, I’d suspect that the 141 car has the 2.0 CDTi diesel engine, the 129g/km of CO2 emissions of which would put it in Band B2 for a €280 tax cost. Is the 161 car a 1.4 turbo petrol? Because that version’s 156g/km emissions put it just into the €570 Band D. Or the discrepancy could be down to one having an automatic gearbox, instead of a manual. Without more details, I’m afraid, we can’t be sure.

I want to use a crew cab privately...

I want to use a six-seat crew cab as a private car; how much is the VRT and road tax on a 2.2-litre diesel?

Fergus Scully (Navan )

Expert answer

Hi Fergus,

VRT won’t come into it. Even if you’re buying as a private buyer, you still pay the 13.3 per cent commercial vehicle rate. As for motor tax, for a 2.2 engine it’ll be €951 per year.

Can I temporarily bring my van in from UK?

Hi, I am doing some work on my own house in Ireland in 2020; how long can I keep my big van there without changing the plates as I want to bring it back to UK again?

Expert answer

Hi Martin,

It all depends on your residential status. Do you still have a UK address to which the van is registered, taxed and insured? If so then there’s theoretically no real upper limit. There is a notional six-month upper ceiling, but if you were to bring the van back to the UK and then back here again that would reset. The only thing I would advise is that you keep your registration and proof of address details in the van in case challenged on the matter by a Garda.

Are crew cab rules ok for used vehicles?

Do the new crew cab tax rates apply to second hand cars? For example, if I buy a 2008 SUV that's classified as a crew cab and taxed as such can I continue to tax it at the commercial rate? I am a limited company director and VAT-registered so the car would be for business use.

Hi Pete,

Yup, if it’s been registered as a commercial vehicle in the first place, and you’re using it only for work purposes, then you’re entitled to continue to tax it as a commercial.

Can I tax this Defender as a commercial?

Hi,

I'm just wondering about taxing a vehicle as commercial. I read your article on it but what if the vehicle (1998 Defender 110) only has three seats, no back seats and is classified as a commercial van? Can I still tax it without a VAT number etc, or will I have to pay full private vehicle tax?

Hi Martin,

If the car is registered as a commercial vehicle, and that’s how you’re using it (strictly no social, domestic, nor pleasure motoring) then yes, absolutely, you can tax it as a commercial.

How much to tax a VW van privately?

How do I calculate the tax if I want to tax a 2.0-litre diesel Volkswagen Transporter privately?

John Fox (Freshford Kilkenny)

Dec 2019 Filed under: taxation

Hi John,

It goes back on to the old by-engine-capacity tax system, if you’re taxing a van as a private car, so if it has a 2.0 engine then you’re looking at €710 a year.

Can we claim back VAT on a five-seat SUV?

Can a company claim back VAT on a five-seat SUV?

Expert answer

Hi Deirdre,

Not any more, I’m afraid. The government closed off the loophole in the tax system that allowed five-seat SUVs with big boots to be classed as vans for tax purposes. That was all shut down in July 2018. Now, it’s always worth checking with your accountant, and you can claim back VAT against five-seat crew-cab pickups and vans, but in general the claiming back on SUVs has gone, now.
