Belt or chain in my 2004 Toyota Avensis diesel?

Hello,

I have a 2004 Toyota Avensis Estate Linea Sol diesel. I would like to know if it has a timing belt or chain.

Hi Anais,

All diesel engines available in the 2014 Avensis used timing chains.

When to change a diesel Mondeo's timing belt?

At what interval does the timing belt need to be changed on a 2021 Ford Mondeo 2.0-litre diesel?

Thanks

Hi Chris,

It should be changed at least every 180,000km or 10 years - whichever comes first.

Is there a new Skoda Karoq on the way?

Dear CompleteCar team,

I was wondering will there be a next generation Skoda Karoq in petrol, diesel and PHEV variants? While the Elroq has replaced an SUV of that size for Skoda, it does not have a rival for all the other SUVs of that size apart from the current Karoq offering, which I feel needs a fresh look. If nothing else to take on the new front look of the Elroq and Enyaq.

Any information would be welcome. Great insightful website. Keep up the good work.

Hi Brendan,

We can't answer that definitively, unfortunately, as there is no official word on it. The Karoq is certainly ageing and due replacement, but we agree there's plenty of demand still for a Skoda model in this space that is not only available with electric power.

Watch this space I guess...

Why has an imported BMW 520d higher tax?

I bought a 2016 BMW 5 Series (F10 2.0-litre diesel) from a garage and was thinking that the tax would be €200 for the year as I had the exact same car last year, but was a 2015 - tax band on CO2 emission was 111-120g/km.

Now when taxing the 2016 car the tax for the year it's showing as €600 for a year at CO2 emissions of 156g/km. It is a Jap import. I just want to make sure if there could be a mistake on the system or it is actually 156g/km emissions before I tax it?

Hi Dilan,

The lower CO2 rating of that earlier car was according to the old “NEDC” standard. Any cars imported since 2021 with an NEDC-standard CO2 figure (as this Jap import would have had) would have had the number 'uplifted' by Revenue to make it comparable to the newer WLTP standard. It was trying to reduce the number of older, more polluting diesels being imported, but it just means that people may more motor tax at times, even if the cars are identical to those already registered in Ireland.

Of course, a Japanese model's CO2 figure could be a little different on top of all that.

I'd like a new diesel car for 2026 delivery...

I have a 2.0-litre diesel Mondeo. It's a nice motor with no problems, but I need to change it soon. I will order in September this year for January 2026. Can you list five options for me? Similar size car with a diesel engine, please.

Hi Fergal,

That's actually becoming a bit of a challenge as regular cars such as the Mondeo have fallen out of favour with buyers, so the carmakers are slowly doing away with them. At the same time, demand for diesel engines is waning. Nonetheless, here are a few possibilities:

- Audi A5 'Saloon' (it's actually a five-door hatch)
- Mercedes-Benz C-Class saloon
- Skoda Superb (another hatchback and the closest match to the Mondeo today)

That's pretty much it. A leftfield alternative could be the Peugeot 508 SW, which is the estate model. It can be had with a diesel engine still, but the five-door 508 fastback cannot. We reckon it looks stunning.

How do these strike you?

How much to tax a Ford Ranger 2.0 privately?

I'm thinking of buying a Ford Ranger Wildtrak (2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel, 205hp, 10-speed automatic).

I would like to know what it costs to tax this privately. I know if you have a VAT number or herd number it's €333. I have been to three different Ford garages and got three different answers.

a) It falls into tax band with CO2 of 171-190g/km, which is €790 a year;

b) It falls into 191-225g/km, which is €1,250 a year and;

c) It has a 2.0-litre engine which costs €710 a year to tax

Can you confirm please?

Expert answer

Hi Bernard,

I can confirm that, if you tax a commercial vehicle privately as described here, the rate is determined by the engine size, so, for an engine of 1,901-2,000cc, the rate is indeed €710 a year.

How much to tax a 1.6-litre diesel van?

Hi,

I'm looking at buying a van. How much would it cost me to tax a 1.6-litre diesel van?

Michael Enright (Dublin 24)

Expert answer

Hi Michael,

If it's being used solely for business use then it can be taxed as a commercial for €333 per year. However, if it's for any private use whatsoever then it needs to be taxed privately. The rate is then determined by the van's engine size, no matter how new it is.

Hence, for a van with an engine of 1,501-1,600cc, the annual motor tax is €514.

How much to do the clutch and timing belt in a 2013 Ford Focus?

How much to replace the clutch plate and timing belt together in a 2013 Ford Focus Titanium 1.6 diesel?

Expert answer

Hi Birenda,

Prices for the parts and the labour will vary wildly depending on where you bring the car, so our best advice is to shop around before you decide.

It's unlikley that you'd change just the clutch plate if the gearbox is off in any case, so factor in replacing the pressure plate, thrust bearing and maybe even the dual-mass flywheel.

Likewise, with the timing belt, you'd likely also replace the water pump at a minimum, possibly a tensioner too depending on the car's age.

In total, we'd suggest somewhere in the region of €1,200 for all this work.

Hi Deirdre,

I'd be inclined to say keep it forever at this stage. It won't be worth much with that mileage on it, and if it's giving no trouble, then keep doing what you're doing.
