Need a reliable SUV for our family...

Hi Cathal,

Any of the cars in our previous conversation should do you well, though the Kodiaq's extra size might appeal given the needs of such a family. You would likely have to compromise on newness or mileage to get one - in comparison to the smaller alternatives.

Diesel is probably the right fuel for you at that mileage, though if a lot of it is at lower speeds, and you don't tend to be a "push on" sort of driver, hybrid power might well be a fine option, too.


Which SUV for up to €30,000?

Looking to buy a family car - budget €25,000 to €30,000 (so I assume a 2021/2022). Looking at the Tucson, Sportage, Audi Q3 or the equivalent Skoda. Looking for reliability. Which of the above would you recommend? Or is there another option I should be looking at?

Hi Cathal,

The Audi Q3 is a bit smaller than the Kia and Hyundai mentioned so make sure you try one out for size if you're serious about that. The equivalent Skoda (to the Sportage and Tucson) is the Karoq, though the larger Kodiaq would also be in budget.

I'd have a little more confidence in the Kia and Hyundai in terms of reliability in comparison to the Audi and Skoda, but only a little as all of these are decent cars. The Hyundai is the most common by far, which means you could afford to be picky in terms of mileage, condition and specification. The Sportage and Tucson are effectively identical under the skin, though the Sportage may come with more of the original warranty in tact, which is another consideration.

In terms of alternatives, we've always liked the Mazda CX-5 for how it drives and, if you're not set on diesel, then the Toyota RAV4 hybrid shouldn't be ignored, either.

What you think about 2016 Volvo XC90 or 2019 S90 or V90? All diesel. I want to stick with Volvo for safety, comfort, space and reliability.

So long as you don't need the extra seats of the XC90 then I'd highly recommend the V90 instead. It drives better, is three years newer than the XC90 you're looking at and its running costs are lower.


Can I convert a Land Cruiser before importing it?

I'm buying a 2005 Toyota Land Cruiser SWB in Northern Ireland where it has been registered from new. It's a passenger version. My question is, can I take out the seats and register it as commercial in the south or if not, can it be registered as commercial in NI first before I bring it in or is it not worth the hassle?

What roughly would the VRT be?

Hi Dermot,

The conversion work would either have to be done (and certified) before importation (in which case it could be imported as a commercial) or the Land Cruiser would have to be imported as a passenger car and the conversion carried out afterwards. Either way it's a lot of hassle for sure.

As a passenger car, the Land Cruiser would likely attract 30 per cent VRT. That's 30 per cent of the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) as determined by Revenue. If we assume that's €8,000, then the VRT would be €2,400. And the NOx levy would be on top of that - up to a maximum of €4,850 for diesel cars if you can't prove it has a lower level of NOx emissions.


How much to get the head gasket done on my Hyundai i30?

Hi Matthew,

Getting the head gasket replaced on any car can vary in cost depending on where you are, who's doing the work and if any additional damage is found. Expect it to cost at least €1,000 at an independent garage, more at a Hyundai dealer.

It's a big job by any measure, which can take up to 12 hours of labour, and the parts are expensive as well. On top of all that, the cylinder head may need skimming or - at worst - replacing, so budget a little extra just in case.

No mechanic can give you a fixed price for the job given the potential for extra damage to the engine that is unseen until it is dismantled.


Looking to run a commercial BMW X5...

Looking to buy a BMW X5 which is a commercial and use for personal use. Any advice what or how could I do this and what tax implications there are?

Hi Dan,

The rules from Revenue are clear: if a commercial vehicle is used for any private reason whatsoever, no matter how infrequently, it must be taxed for private use. If the X5 you are referring to is already registered as a commercial vehicle, then, bizarre as it sounds, the private motor tax will be determined based on the engine size - yes, even if it's a post-2008 model.

In the case of the X5, if it's powered by the popular 3.0-litre diesel engine, that would mean an annual motor tax bill of €1,494.

If you're thinking about buying a regular X5 and re-classifying it as a commercial, that would only be possible if the rear seats are removed permanently, and a bulkhead is put in place behind the front seats. Even so, it would have to be taxed privately if you intend to use it for any private reason.


Are these VRT estimates on a Transit Custom right?!

I am looking to buy a family nine-seater like the Ford Tourneo Custom in NI. Unfortunately, Revenue's VRT calculator can't find anything from the years I've searched (2018, 2019, 2020), giving me a "No vehicle found for combination selected" error.

I tried vrt.ie, but it's giving me very high estimates. Could they be true?

For example, for a Feb 2019 Ford Tourneo Custom 2.0 EcoBlue 130hp Titanium, asking price £20,000, it came out at €16,493.48 CO2 (WTLP CO2 emissions: 215.867g/km, which seems crazy?) and €2,625 NOx charge.

For another specimen, a Jan 2020 Ford Tourneo 2.0 EcoBlue 130hp Titanium, they came at €8,979.6 CO2 (WTLP CO2 emissions: 164g/km) and €2,625 NOx.

Are these estimations even realistic? NOx is most certainly not right, but even the CO2 part seems excessive. But it's my first rodeo, so I really don't know! I would be very grateful for any clues.

Hi Slawek,

We've found Revenue's VRT estimator to be lacking in a lot of ways and it certainly doesn't list all makes and models for all years.

Let's break down the figures.

First up, the NOx levy quoted by vrt.ie (€2,650) is actually the maximum possible charged for a vehicle with a diesel engine. Neither of the examples you provided will emit enough NOx to warrant that, though you will need to have proof of their official figure to avoid paying the maximum. We'd estimate that a NOx levy of about €250 is more realistic in this case.

Be careful with the CO2 figures. The 164g/km rating quoted for the second vehicle appears to be the old NEDC figure and Revenue will actually apply an “uplift” formula (see our Guide to Importing Cars from the UK feature for that) to bring it up to an equivalent WLTP rating. It comes out as 204g/km, meaning VRT at 41 per cent.

In your first example, this appears to have been done already, resulting in the 215g/km rating.

In both cases, that would mean VRT at 41 per cent of the OMSP, the Open Market Selling Price.

Now this is where things become less clear. The OMSP is not the asking price of the car, or even the price you pay for it, but the value Revenue places on it as a vehicle registered in Ireland and on sale here. It's not easy to estimate for relatively rare vehicles. For the purposes of our calculation, let's say €45,000. At 41 per cent, the VRT on that would be €18,450.

Obviously that could go up or down depending on how much Revenue believes the vehicle is worth, but we're certain of the 41 per cent VRT rate, unfortunately.

Assuming you mean the current 'G60' model then I'm afraid the answer is no. When it was first unveiled, BMW Ireland indicated that no diesel version would be sold here and we double-checked that just now before answering this question. 


Should I replace my Mazda with a Mercedes CLA?

Looking at a 2019 Mercedes CLA 1.3 petrol with low mileage to replace a 2016 Mazda6 Platinum 2.2 diesel (150hp).

Hi Richard,

We're not convinced that's a good move. While we really like how the CLA looks, it's far smaller inside than your Mazda. That 1.3-litre engine is a little gutless as well and will feel it after your 2.2-litre diesel Mazda. The CLA has proven to be mostly reliable, though, other than a few possible gremlins.

Make sure you go and test drive the car before you make any decisions. 


What to replace my SEAT Ateca with?

Hi guys,

I'd like your advice please on what to change my SEAT Ateca for or stick like for like (it's a lovely drive).

I live in north Donegal so very windy roads but now spend three out of four weeks in Louth caring for my father who's had a stroke, So wheelchair and Zimmer frame space is needed. I already have heated front seats in mine, that's a must, plus I mind my grandnephew and there's a new baby on the way so it needs to be easy to fit a car seat also.

Because Donegal is so hilly I need a good bit of power. I was thinking automatic for the longer drives but honestly don't mind manual. I'm also used to diesel, I'd like rear parking assistance, Bluetooth, anti-collision detection if possible.

So many to choose from my brain is addled, I've a 172 Ateca at the moment so want to go 2021+ and my maximum budget is €16,000 plus whatever I get for my car as a trade-in.

Any advice would be great thank you

Hi Lorraine,

There really is a lot of choice out there, but we will try to help you narrow things down.

With your car as a trade-in, and the €16,000 budget on top, we'll look for cars up to about €27,000.

First up, narrowing the search to automatic SUVs post-2021 really limits your options to the Nissan Qashqai, which isn't very powerful, the Peugeot 3008 (which is quite rare) or the Skoda Karoq and Volkswagen Tiguan. The latter two are potentially worth a look as they're built on much the same underpinnings as your Ateca and their 2.0 TDI engines have plenty of go. There aren't many of them about with automatic gearboxes though.

Removing the constraint on that opens up the options considerably and one car that stands out for us right away is the Mazda CX-5. It's perhaps not as common as some others, but it's great to drive in particular and it should tick all your other boxes. Try to get hold of one to test drive for yourself.

A newer Ateca is of course an option, and we're big fans of the SEAT, but all the newer ones we found haven't a very powerful engine.

The Peugeot 3008 is another car we like and would encourage you to try it out for size. There are plenty of them about with a manual gearbox.

All of these should have the niceties you're looking for as well.
