Which of these would be a good starter car?
Hi, my girlfriend who is 22 has recently got her first provisional licence and completed her mandatory 12 lessons. Any advice on a good starter car for her, for under €1,000 if possible? Taking into account tax and insurance costs I've been looking at Cinquecentos, Micras, Polos and the Daewoo Lanos as they're 1.0-litre or under. Any of these worth considering, orany that should definitely be avoided?
Thanks

Hi Ciaran,
You can't go too far wrong with a good Nissan Micra or Volkswagen Polo, even at that price. They are reasonable to insure, pretty reliable and the Micra in particular is great on fuel. We'd stay away from the Daewoo Lanos and though the Fiat Cinquecento is bursting with character they can be troublesome. Others to consider are the Suzuki Swift and Volkswagen Lupo.
Come back to us with a shortlist if you want and we can help further.
How good is the Volkswagen CrossPolo in windy weather?
How good is the Volkswagen CrossPolo in windy weather? I do a lot of motorway driving and like the look of this car but wonder how sturdy it would be on the open roads in the very windy weather we get.
Thanks

Hi Paula,
Despite appearances, the CrossPolo is less than 30mm taller than the regular Polo hatchback. We don't expect it to be significantly different to the Polo on the road.
We've not yet driven this car, though we're due to within weeks so keep an eye on the site and if anything changes we'll let you know.
Would an engine check light put you off buying a car?
Hi, please help me! I am planning on buying a 2003 Volkswagen Polo, but it has engine check light on. What could be the reason? Is it ok to buy the car?

Mar 2012 Filed under: fault
Expert answer
Hi Meenesh,
It's highly likely that this points to a fairly minor issue, though it's impossible to diagnose from here. You most definitely should not buy this car until the reason for the light being on is found and the problem fixed. Most decent mechanics and garages will have diagnostic equipment to hook up to the car, which will tell them what's causing the light to come on.
Insist that the seller does that before you commit to anything. If they do get it sorted out, make sure the engine check light still comes on when the ignition is turned on, but then goes out when the car is started, as an unscrupulous seller could just remove the bulb!
Best of luck
BMW, Volkswagen or Toyota Avensis for a taxi?
Which car would be best for a taxi from this lot: 2006 BMW 520d, 2007/2008 Volkswagen Passat or Toyota Avensis (both diesel) - all cars with around 75,000 miles on the clock and costing around €10,000?
Justin O'Gorman (Limerick)Mar 2012 Filed under: taxi
Expert answer
Hi Justin,
I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that the lower mileage car you can find, the better. All three models mentioned are suitable for the job, though there's a reason so many taxis are the Toyota Avensis. It's the one we'd veer towards. The BMW would be a nicer car than either the Passat or the Toyota, but once you start racking up high mileage its maintenance could get expensive.

Hope that helps.

Hi Donna,
We'd need a lot more information to give you an good estimate, including mileage, condition and specification, but a rough guide is somewhere between €7,000 and €8,500.
Hope that's of some help, but come back to us with more information if you want.
Should I look out for anything buying a Volkswagen Transporter?
I was interested in buying a Volkswagen Transporter 1.9 TDI. I was wondering if you have any suggestions regarding issues I should be aware of when buying a used commercial vehicle.

Mar 2012 Filed under: commercial vehicle
Expert answer
Hi Cian,
We don't profess to be van experts, so we put this question to Gerry Murphy, a jury member on the Irish Van of the Year panel. His response is:
"The Volkswagen Transporter is a popular choice and owners are generally very loyal to the brand so repeat purchases are common place. Buying a used van is a little more complicated than buying a used car. As with any commercial vehicle, what the van was used for previously will tell you a lot about it. Did it tow a trailer? Was it used in the construction industry - often carrying heavy loads - or was it used to deliver flowers or light goods around a city?
A close look at the interior and cargo area for wear and tear will tell you how the van was treated. Also, vans that are owned by private members of the public are often better treated than vans that come from a fleet. As with any vehicle check if it has a service history. This is essential.
As for the Transporter, you don't say what year it is but there are things to look out for. Check that the area around the turbocharger is dry and not showing any signs of leakage. Also look under the vehicle from the rear and check that there are no signs of damage to the coil springs especially if the van pulled a trailer in its previous life."
Hope that helps
What small automatic hatchback has a big boot?
I am buying a small automatic hatchback between 2004 to 2008, with a 1.4-litre or smaller engine. This car will be doing low mileage but a good boot that is easy to load is a must.
What do you recommend?
Eamonn McAndrew (Mayo)Mar 2012 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Eamonn,
Come back to us with your budget, but cars to consider include the Citroen C3, Ford Fiesta, perhaps the Ford Fusion, Honda Jazz, Mazda2 (also called the Demio as an import), Nissan Micra (called the March as an import), Opel Corsa, SEAT Ibiza, Suzuki Swift, Toyota Yaris and the Volkswagen Polo.

That's a long list, I know! It really depends on your budget. Our pick of all that lot would be the Honda Jazz given your requirement for a big boot that's easy to access.
Hope that helps.
Can I retrofit parking sensors to a Volkswagen Passat?
Is it possible to retrofit parking sensors to a 2005 Volkswagen Passat TDI Sport 140?

Feb 2012 Filed under: aftermarket
Expert answer
Hi Roger,
We put this one to Volkswagen Ireland. It was confirmed that Park Distance Control is available for the 2005 Passat saloon (B6), with part number "3C0 054 630". It includes a control unit, four sensors, a sound generator and connecting wires. Best bet is to contact your local Volkswagen dealer for a price. We believe the sensors can even be painted to match the colour of your car.
Hope that helps
Passat or Insignia? Help!
Hi guys
Very close to changing, but caught between 2010 Volkswagen Passat Highline with the 1.6 TDI engine or a very good price on a 2009 Opel Insignia 2.0 diesel CTDi. I have seen your review of the Insignia regards a creeking plastic interior. The Insignia is the better looking car but would Passat be better overall?
Michael Mulvey (Ashbourne)Feb 2012 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Michael,
It sounds like this choice is down to personal opinion. The Passat has a better reputation for reliability, though the Insignia is not too shabby on that front. The creaking interiors affected early cars and you should be able to quickly check for it on a test drive.
We agree that the Insignia is a better looking car, though the Passat Highline has a great specification. Countering all that the Insignia's 2.0-litre engine is more powerful, if louder and less refined.
In summary, we'd probably go for the Passat, but regret it every time we see a good Insignia!
Best of luck - let us know how you get on.
How much is my Volkswagen Golf worth?
What trade-in price would I get for my 2006 Volkswagen Golf 1.6 Sport Comfortline with 155k miles on the clock?
Michelle Masterson (Dublin)Feb 2012 Filed under: used car values
Expert answer
Hi Michelle,
There's no simple answer to such questions. It will depend on the condition of your car, how much the seller of your next car wants the sale, etc. From a dealer's perspective that's quite high mileage. They may offer as low as €4,000. You're likely to get a better price selling it privately.
Best of luck
