What work should I do on my 2013 Ford Kuga?

I have a 2013 Ford Kuga 2.0-litre with 143,000km on the clock. It's well maintained. I had the transmission and clutch renewed at 95,000km and the timing chain and water pump seem ok. What preventive work should I be aware off? Great car.

Hi David,

Our information is that your car's engine – 2.0 TDCi diesel – has a timing belt, not a chain. The belt should be changed at least every 200,000km or 10 years, whichever comes first. If that has never been done then I strongly recommend you get it replaced as soon as possible, along with the water pump and auxiliary belts.

It's also recommended that the coolant system is flushed out every 120,000km and the antifreeze replaced. Same story with the cabin odour filter.

Aside from all that, obviously replace the oil and filter regularly, too.

Which kind of belt does a Ford Kuga have?

I have a 2015 Ford Kuga; does it have a timing belt or a wet belt?

Hi Julie.

First up, you've not told us which engine your Kuga has, and that's a key detail. We'll have to assume it has one of the most common units, which is the 2.0 TDCi diesel.

Secondly, a "wet belt" is a type of timing belt. When someone says "timing belt" they generally mean a "dry" belt that does not run in oil - like a wet belt does.

Anyway, the 2.0-litre diesel engine in the 2015 Kuga has a dry timing belt, not a wet one. It also has a small timing chain in the cylinder head joining the camshafts.

Thoughts on the 2009 Ford Focus diesel?

Considering buying a 2009 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi Zetec 115hp. Are these generally considered a good car?

Thanks for your help

Hi Grainne,

In general that Focus is indeed a sensible, solid used buy.

However, it's getting on now, so you can't expect a new car. And parts of the engine - specifically the EGR valve and DPF in the exhaust - are known to clog up if the car is used for only short drives.

Our advice is to test drive a few examples of the same car so you get a feel for a good one, then insist on a full service history and walk away from any car that doesn't drive smoothly.

Belt or chain in the 2017 Ford Kuga diesel?

Does the 2017 Ford Kuga 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engine have a timing chain or wet belt?

Expert answer

Hi Callum,

That engine has a timing belt, but it is in fact a "dry" belt, not a wet one. It does not run in oil. For your information, there is an additional (small) timing chain in the cylinder head linking the camshafts, but that's essentially maintenance free and it's only the belt you need to think about changing.

Come back to us with the engine code or power output and we can look up the replacement schedule for you.

Does my Mondeo have two timing belts?

Hello, I have a Ford Mondeo 1.8 TDCi registered in January 2009.

I was told that two timing belts need to be changed depending on the year of manufacture. On some models, this would be unnecessary, as a chain is used in place of the second belt.

Is my vehicle affected by this double change?

Expert answer

Hi Chevalier,

We have no way of knowing which setup your car's engine has remotely, but you are correct in that some of the engines from that year use a chain for the high-pressure fuel pump drive while others use a belt - alongside the main timing belt.

It doesn't really matter which your engine has, unfortunately, as the chain must be replaced just as often as the timing belt - at least every 200,000km or 10 years, whichever comes first.

Have I been overcharged for a timing belt change?

Have just paid for a timing belt on a ford focus 1.6 Zetec TDCi manual and it has cost me €1,650. The mechanic said he had skimmed the head gaskets as well. Have I been over charged? Your answer would be much appreciated, thank you.

Hi David,

Unless the timing belt broke, leading to you getting this work done, then I see no reason why the garage would have removed the cylinder head while replacing it. That is not routine.

It also is not possible to skim a head gasket, so presumably the mechanic said he skimmed the cylinder head itself. If they removed the cylinder head to do that as well as replace all the parts associated with the timing belt then the price doesn't sound unreasonable, but I'd question why the cylinder head was removed if this was supposed to be a regular timing belt change.

Is the 2006 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi a good car?

I would like to buy a 2006 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi estate. Is it a good car?

Thank you.

Aubril (Dans La Manche 50)

Expert answer

Hi Aubril,

The Focus estate in general is pretty decent, but the 1.8-litre diesel engine was not Ford's finest hour and unless it has verified low mileage and/or a detailed service history showing regular oil changes, it's best to look for an alternative. The 1.6-litre diesel is a far superior engine from Ford, for example.

Hi Nicholas,

It depends on which version it is and which gearbox it has. It will be either €390 or €570 per year according to our data. If you have the registration we should be able to check for sure.
