How to clear a non-running project car on importation?

Hi,

I'm considering buying a classic Ford from the UK which does not run and is a project car. How do I go about clearing it to Irish plates as it is now before I do any work to it? Do i need to trailer it to the NCT centre as it is?

Hi Pete,

The process is the exact same as for a running car. You will need to make an appointment with the NCTS and have the car inspected, and pay VRT, even if it is indeed on a trailer or recovery truck.

If the Ford is over 30 years old the VRT will only be €200 in any case.

How much to tax a Ford Ranger 2.0 privately?

I'm thinking of buying a Ford Ranger Wildtrak (2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel, 205hp, 10-speed automatic).

I would like to know what it costs to tax this privately. I know if you have a VAT number or herd number it's €333. I have been to three different Ford garages and got three different answers.

a) It falls into tax band with CO2 of 171-190g/km, which is €790 a year;

b) It falls into 191-225g/km, which is €1,250 a year and;

c) It has a 2.0-litre engine which costs €710 a year to tax

Can you confirm please?

Hi Bernard,

I can confirm that, if you tax a commercial vehicle privately as described here, the rate is determined by the engine size, so, for an engine of 1,901-2,000cc, the rate is indeed €710 a year.

How much to do the clutch and timing belt in a 2013 Ford Focus?

How much to replace the clutch plate and timing belt together in a 2013 Ford Focus Titanium 1.6 diesel?

Hi Birenda,

Prices for the parts and the labour will vary wildly depending on where you bring the car, so our best advice is to shop around before you decide.

It's unlikley that you'd change just the clutch plate if the gearbox is off in any case, so factor in replacing the pressure plate, thrust bearing and maybe even the dual-mass flywheel.

Likewise, with the timing belt, you'd likely also replace the water pump at a minimum, possibly a tensioner too depending on the car's age.

In total, we'd suggest somewhere in the region of €1,200 for all this work.

Does the Ford Kuga 1.5 EcoBoost have a 'wet belt'?

Does the 2018 Ford Kuga Titanium X 1.5 EcoBoost three-cylinder petrol engine have a 'wet belt'?

Expert answer

Hi Gary,

The 1.5 EcoBoost engine in the Kuga is a four-cylinder unit, not a three-cylinder design, and it has a traditional 'dry' belt, not a wet one like the 1.0 EcoBoost engine found elsewhere in the Ford range.

Does the Ford Courier Tourneo diesel have a ‘wet’ belt?

No, it has a traditional 'dry' timing belt.

Is the wet belt in a 2022 Ford Focus a problem?

I bought a 2022 Ford Focus petrol ST line MHEV early this year and since have seen reports etc that the wet oil pump belt being rubber is causing problems. However I saw that the mild-hybrid model has a chain and not a rubber belt. Have you any information on this problem?

Many thanks

Expert answer

Hi Frank,

It's the timing belt itself that you've heard about most likely as, on some versions of the 1.0-litre Ford EcoBoost engine, it is what's called a “wet belt”. That means the timing belt actually runs in oil, where most timing belts do not.

Ford isn't alone in having problems with them. The rubber in the belts can degrade due to many issues including use of the wrong engine oil and impurities in the oil as it gets older.

The good news for you is that, while earlier examples of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine did use this setup (though not all), and Ford dropped it from 2022 on, the MHEV engines always used timing chains instead and they should therefore be more robust.

However, even those later engines use a rubber belt to drive the oil pump and that still runs in oil so potentially has all the same issues. It is too new for those problems to have come to light and Ford believes it is designed for the life of the engine because it is under far less stress than the timing belt was.

All we can advise is that you carry out oil changes a little sooner than recommended and that you always use the correct specification of oil.

Costs to import a Transit crewcab from the North?

I'm thinking of importing a Ford Transit Custom crew cab from Northern Ireland into the Republic of Ireland. There are three seats in the back. I'd like to know the costs of import.

Hi James,

If the vehicle has been in use in the North for "a reasonable amount of time" (according to Revenue) then there should be no VAT or import duty payable. You will need to obtain proof of that.

Assuming that is the case (and not that the Transit was just imported from England by a dealer in Northern Ireland to just sell on), really it's just VRT, which we believe should only be €200 for the van you've described.

How do I determine whether my Ford Kuga has a timing belt or chain?

Hi Darren,

If you don't know what you're looking at under the bonnet then get as much information as you can about the car and engine (year, engine size, power output, etc) and either search the web or come ask us to look it up for you.

When to change my Mondeo diesel's belt?

I have a 1.6 Econetic diesel Ford Mondeo; what interval is the cambelt change at?

Expert answer

Hi Stephen,

You've not told us the year, so we're assuming the 2014-2015 model. Its belt should be changed at least every 180,000km or 10 years – whichever comes first.

Obviously come back to us with the model year if that's not your car.

Belt or chain in the 2017 Ford Kuga diesel?

Does the 2017 Ford Kuga 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engine have a timing chain or wet belt?

Callum (Brighton)

Jun 2025 Filed under: timing belt or chain

Expert answer

Hi Callum,

That engine has a timing belt, but it is in fact a "dry" belt, not a wet one. It does not run in oil. For your information, there is an additional (small) timing chain in the cylinder head linking the camshafts, but that's essentially maintenance free and it's only the belt you need to think about changing.

Come back to us with the engine code or power output and we can look up the replacement schedule for you.
