We assume by 'outdoor' you mean an Audi allroad quattro type vehicle with raised ride height and protective cladding. Skoda markets that as 'Scout'. Unfortunately Skoda does not offer the Superb in such specification, but it does offer a 4x4 variant in both saloon and Combi (estate) guises with prices starting from €35,695.

If you can live without the Superb's expansive legroom there's always the Octavia Scout - a 4x4 Octavia Combi with 17mm extra ride height, bigger bumpers and moulded side protective strips, for €32,350.

We really like the Audi A1. Despite its smaller size it'll feel like a big step up in terms of quality etc. from your 2002 BMW 3 Series. A nearly new model will cost you very little in terms of servicing as well and there's a wide range of efficient petrol and diesel engines. Our favourite is the 1.2 TSI petrol, though if you cover a high average mileage (say greater than 15,000km a year) then it's worth looking for the 1.6 TDI diesel version instead.

We spoke to Skoda Ireland about this and here's the response:

"This is not a simple fix. All Greenline vehicles come without a spare wheel.  If it was a Superb or Octavia it would be straight forward.

The Yeti wheel well in the Greenline differs from other models. The Yeti Greenline has increased boot volume and different carpets and fittings (much deeper boot) as a result of not having the spare wheel. This makes the task of including a spare wheel a very difficult one as it won’t actually fit!

It could technically be altered but it would be costly."

Hi David,

In general this Fiesta (assuming it's the shape that was launched in 2002) was quite reliable. Our standard advice is to get as detailed a service history as possible and perhaps a Cartell.ie car history check too as it was imported from the UK.

A few specific things to look for on this model include water pump or power steering noises (they both fail) and damp carpets. These can all be remedied relatively cheaply, but best to get the seller to pay!

The €14,990 price quoted in our first drive is for the entry level, two-wheel-drive, Duster in 'Alternative' specification with the Signature 4WD model that we tested coming in at €18,990 as you say.

For reference, information from manufacturer sites should always be checked, as prices and specifications can change over time and every once in a while a car will slip through the cracks when we update test drives.

That car is getting on now, so it's unlikely to be perfect. 

Known issues with the 2.2-litre model include a fixable oil leak from the transmission, faulty electric adjustment for the seats (if fitted), clonking from the rear of the car when moving away from rest, unexpected battery discharge and starting issues caused by the steering column lock control module.

Otherwise it's a fairly robust car. Most of the issues above can be fixed inexpensively.

The short version is, I’m afraid, you’re going to struggle. Small cars such as that don’t generally sell well with diesel engines, as the petrol variants are very economical already, and the diesel versions are much more expensive. We’ve found one on Carzone.ie (a 2005 VW Polo TDI),  but that was literally the only one we could find on sale that fits the bill. You might want to consider upgrading to a larger car — there are lots of diesel Golfs etc around in your price range.

Hi Adrian,

There's no doubt that premium cars of this age can come with costly repair bills. The older they get the more likely something will go wrong, no matter how reliable they are in general. The example you're looking at already has quite high mileage so we'd say budget for a grand or so of repairs a year just in case.

This generation of the A4 was reliable enough. Most problems seem to have stemmed from heating and cooling systems (in particular the air conditioning) and electrics so thoroughly inspect the car - preferably with a bit of professional help. Ensure that the gearbox (assuming it's manual) is smooth and noise-free and that there is no clonking from the front suspension.

First thing to do is bring the car back to the dealer. It's very new and is hence covered by warranty. Trying to fix it yourself could invalidate the warranty.

Without hearing the problem for ourselves it sounds like it could be something small like the dust shield vibrating against the caliper, but definitely worth getting it looked at.

First of all, there are a huge number of factors that affect your fuel consumption. Tyre pressures is a major one - ensure they're in spec. Next up is your use of the air conditioning and other energy-sapping devices like rear window demister. The weight you carry in the car and whether you have a roof box or roof bars fitted will also have an effect. Last, but certainly not least, is your driving style.

You've not told us which engine you have so we'll assume it's the 1.5 dCi 105hp, as that's one of the most common in Ireland. The official urban figure for that car was 6.4 litres/100km (44.1mpg) and the combined consumption figure is 5.4 litres/100km (52.3mpg).

Hope that's of some help
