Which stylish family car for about €20,000?
Hi,
We are looking to purchase a new car and we're not sure where to start. We have a 2019 Dacia Sandero and a 2004 Skoda Octavia and are thinking of trading both in for something decent if we can manage with one car (we both work from home frequently and use public transport if needed). Aiming for a budget of about €20,000.
We have older children now, so we need something spacious for family outings or journeys. Any advice would be great thanks.

Hi Alex,
Offline you mentioned you'd like something stylish as well as solid and spacious. One of the first cars that comes to mind is the Audi Q3, which is decently practical, has a premium badge and is plentiful for your budget of about €20,000. I'd urge you to stick with petrol power given your annual mileage of no more than 15,000km.
The BMW X1 would do the same job, but it's very difficult to find one that isn't diesel. Same story with the Audi A6 Avant and BMW 5 Series Touring estates, both of which we'd prefer over an SUV. And same thing for the excellent Volkswagen Arteon.
A hybrid-powered Lexus NX would be a good option for you, as would the Mazda CX-5, though neither are as common in the classifieds as the Audi above.
Have a look at some of those and test drive as many cars as you can.

What size is the MG HS PHEV's fuel tank?
I have the new MG HS PHEV and have noted that you say that the fuel tank is of 55-litre capacity. I live in England and all the literature over here states 37 litres. But today I drove into a petrol station with 50 miles of petrol range on the clock and without filling up I put 44 litres in.
Is the 55-litre tank an EU market thing? If it is I would seem to have an Irish model as it's right-hand drive. Can you share any insights you might have on the tank size?

The UK and Ireland cars are more or less identical and, according to this official MG Europe document, the 55-litre tank is standard across the board in the new MG HS.

The only new MGs on sale in Ireland right now that have four-wheel drive are the high-performance cars, i.e. the dual-motor MG Cyberster GT and the MG4 XPower. All the SUVs are two-wheel drive.
Audi or Ford for my daughter's first car?
My daughter is getting her first car; she is 18. She wants an Audi, but I think they might be expensive and dearer parts etc. So, we are now thinking of a 2014 Ford Focus diesel for reliability and safety etc.

Though there's likely to be very little difference between the two cars in terms of reliability and safety (assuming other things like age, mileage, condition and service history are equal), you're most likely correct in terms of more expensive servicing and parts for the Audi.
And make sure you get an insurance quote before you commit to any car.

Going on the information you've provided, the only importation costs should be the flat-rate VRT for classic cars (€200). You will need paperwork to prove that the BMW has been registered and used in Northern Ireland. Book the car in for a VRT inspection with the NCTS within seven days of bringing the car south and they will talk you through it all.

Hi Marek,
Go to https://www.mlit.go.jp/jidosha/jidosha_fr10_000019.html (and use a browser that will automatically translate it from Japanese to English for you) and scroll down to item 6 and get Excel files full of information for loads of JDM cars. Those hold engine codes, etc, fuel consumption and CO2 data.
We found several entries for the Toyota you mentioned, with CO2 varying from 173-187g/km depending on the specific version of car.
If you're importing this car, Revenue will likely take the official NEDC CO2 figure for the European market and 'uplift' it to WLTP standards, meaning that even the automatic model will likely be in Band F (191-225g/km), while the manual may be in Band G (226g/km and higher).

Hi Jane,
If the Open Market Selling Price of the car (the OMSP is the value Revenue in Ireland believes it is worth after importation) is less than €40,000 then you'll have no VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax) to pay. If the OMSP is between €40,000 and €50,000 then there's tapered VRT relief, and no relief at all for cars deemed to be worth more than €50,000.
The above applies no matter what the 'customs state' of the car.
What you need to look out for is whether you'll be liable for customs duty - at 10 per cent of the customs value (purchase price, plus transportation costs, plus insurance) - and VAT. The latter is 23 per cent of the customs value plus the customs duty.
Now, if the car has been in use in Northern Ireland for, as Revenue calls it, “a reasonable amount of time”, then VAT and customs duty are unlikely to be payable. You will need proof of that, however. If the car is being bought from a dealer that imported it from England for sale, then ask them for proof of importing according to the Windsor Framework.
Will I buy an MGS5 EV or something else?

I am looking at changing my car, but no idea what to get. Mostly there would be only two adult passengers. I travel about 80km a day. Was looking at the MGS5 EV (If I go electric, I would like a range of around 350-400km).
Any suggestion of cars to have a look at or consider would be much appreciated.

Hi Brona,
That's a pretty open-ended brief to be honest. If you're looking a the MGS5 EV then we can assume your budget is in and around €30,000-€35,000. Even the entry-level model – Excite Standard Range – officially manages up to 340km on a charge.
Given your low daily mileage, that should be more than sufficient for your needs, even if the real-world figure drops a little in winter. That is of course if you are planning on getting a home charger. We'd recommend buyers only consider an EV if they can charge up at home or work.
Another good option for your needs is the Volkswagen ID.3 if you're not set on an SUV and, if space isn't a priority, maybe even the fantastic new Renault 5.

Do all Peugeot PureTech engines have wet-belt issues?
I want to know about the timing belt issues in Peugeot's 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine. Do all cars have the same issues?

Hi Ann,
The issue with early PureTech petrol engines is well documented. They use what's called a “wet belt”, which means the timing belt actually runs in oil. Most timing belts do not. Unfortunately, many of these engines have reportedly suffered from premature timing belt degradation. This can lead to lots of other engine issues caused by the presence of bits of the timing belt in the oil system. This did not affect every example of the engine, though.
In an attempt to fix the issue, there was a change to the material used in the timing belt from about 2021.
Aside from that, using the correct oil at service time is key, and perhaps shortening the time between oil services is to be advised. Likewise, we'd urge owners to change the timing belt a little earlier than the official interval.

Any of the cars in our previous conversation should do you well, though the Kodiaq's extra size might appeal given the needs of such a family. You would likely have to compromise on newness or mileage to get one - in comparison to the smaller alternatives.
Diesel is probably the right fuel for you at that mileage, though if a lot of it is at lower speeds, and you don't tend to be a "push on" sort of driver, hybrid power might well be a fine option, too.
