How much road tax on a BMW 520d?

How much road tax will I pay on a 2009 BMW 520d? Is it cheaper under the new car tax law?

On the manual version of the 520d you will pay €156 annual road tax. If you get an automatic version from 2009, annual road tax will be €302. This is considerably less than you would have paid under the old system, which based on the engine size of the car (1,995cc) would have meant that road tax would have been €614 per year.

Hi Robert, The emissions on the 520d manual are 136g/km, but emissions are higher in the automatic version because the automatic version uses more fuel which is linked to C02 emissions and are 149g/km. As you can see from the table below, the manual version sits in Motor Tax Band B (€156) and the automatic, which has higher emissions sits in Band C with road tax of €302. Automatic gearboxes can seldom operate as efficiently as a human changing gears themselves, but things are improving.

Band A – Car that produce 0-120g/km CO2 – 14% VRT - €104 Road Tax

Band B - Car that produce 121g – 140g CO2 – 16% VRT - €156 Road Tax

Band C – Cars that produce 141g-155g CO2 – 20% VRT - €302 Road Tax

Band D – Cars that produce 156g-170g CO2 – 24% VRT - €447 Road Tax

Band E - Car that produce 171g-190g CO2 – 28% VRT- €630 Road Tax

Band F - Car that produce 191g – 225g CO2– 32% VRT- €1,050 Road Tax

Band G - Car that produce 226g and over – 36% VRT- €2,100 Road Tax

thanks for the quick response but is there a specific reason that the automatic 520d tax would be dearer than the manual
