How economical is the 2004 Toyota Corolla?
What would a 2004 Toyota Corolla do to the gallon?
Jon O Connor (Cork Ireland)Expert answer
Hi Jon,
Well, it depends which model you mean, but I’m assuming it’s a 1.4 VVTi petrol with a manual gearbox. If so, the original official fuel economy was 42.2mpg, or 6.7 litres per 100km. Depending on how well the car has been looked after in the 14 years since then, it’ll probably do around 35mpg in daily driving.
Thoughts on second-hand Audi A4 1.6?
Hi,
I'm looking at buying a second hand Audi A4 1.6 102hp and was wondering is there anything I should be aware of? It's an 07 model with 50,000 miles on the clock. Is it worth €9,000?
Gareth MacHale (Dublin)Feb 2013 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Gareth,
No, more like €5-6k unless it’s in ludicrously good condition and has delivery mileage. The 1.6 engine is pretty underpowered but it’s robust — just watch for problems with the fuel injectors. You’ll need to check the suspension for wear and tear too (listen for nasty clunking noises over bumps) and, for a car of this age, you really need to check everything. It would help if it comes with a full service history, but at that age I doubt that it will.
Which estate car for up to €6,000?
Hi,
I am looking to buy an estate car, driving mainly around Dublin, the odd long journey. Do not want to spend more than €6k. What would you recommend? Needs to be reliable, fuel efficient and have a big boot preferably with fold down flat rear seats.
Robert Munch (Dublin)Feb 2013 Filed under: choosing used car
Expert answer
Hi Robert,
There’s lots of choice in that price bracket for an estate. You could go posh with an Audi A4 Avant TDI (you’ll get into a 2007 model for that budget), or big and practical with a Toyota Avensis (2011 or thereabouts), or sporty with a BMW 3 Series Touring. However, you’re probably best going for a Golf — that budget gets you a 2008 or 2009 Golf Estate, which is roomy, practical, reliable, and nice to drive.
What's up with my Freelander's window?
Why won't the rear window on my Land Rover Freelander stay closed?
Mark Kavanagh (Dublin)Feb 2013 Filed under: fault
Expert answer
Hi Mark,
There is a known issue with the Freelander concerning the central locking that may cause this, which annoyingly requires replacement of the fuel filler flap motor, then the central locking system fuse (F25 (10A) in fascia fuse box/relay plate if you want to check that before doing anything else).
How economical is the Volvo S60?
What is the fuel consumption of a Volvo S60 D3 163hp SE LUX?
Kevin Anthony (Enniscorthy)Expert answer
Hi Kevin,
The D3 model has 136hp and the D4 has 163hp ao we're not sure which you're interested in, but here's all the data in any case:
- S60 D3 136hp manual: 65.7mpg (4.3 litres/100km)
- S60 D3 136hp Geartronic auto: 58.7mpg (4.8 litres/100km)
- S60 D4 163hp manual: 65.7mpg (4.3 litres/100km) [yes, the same!]
- S60 D4 163hp Geartronic auto: 58.9mpg (4.8 litres/100km)

How reliable is the Land Rover Discovery 3?
What are the pitfalls in buying a Land Rover Discovery 3 automatic as a commercial?
Paraic Donohoe (Arklow)Feb 2013 Filed under: commercial vehicle
Expert answer
Hi Paraic,
First and foremost is the running costs, but I guess they're on the same level as any large SUV-based commercial with an automatic gearbox - they're heavy on fuel and tyres, etc.
Other than that, while the Discovery 3 is proving to be more reliable than its predecessor, it's hardly the most dependable truck of its type. Some cars are perfect, but others have loads of issues, from the electrics to the air suspension and even to full engine failure.
Don't settle for anything less than a full service history and make sure you have the car checked out by someone that knows what they're looking at too.
Hope that helps
Towing ability of a 2010 Jeep Cherokee?
How would a 2010 Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD Limited Auto perform off-road pulling a horse trailer with two horses? Also, what about its economy?
Maria O,Grady (Thurles)Feb 2013 Filed under: towing
Expert answer
Hi Maria,
If it’s the four-wheel-drive version (a 2WD model was occasionally offered) then it should have a maximum towing capacity of 3,504kg, which should easily handle a horse box with two on board. Just make sure that the combined weight doesn’t put you over the total 3,500kg limit, or you’ll need a special towing licence. Official fuel economy when the car was new was 31mpg, or 8.9 litres per 100km.
Should I go for an automatic Volvo S40?
I'm looking at a Volvo S40, automatic. Are there any disadvantages of an automatic over a manual? Are there any reports about Volvo S40 gearboxes?
Nabeel Alhamdy (Dublin)Feb 2013 Filed under: automatic
Expert answer
Hi Nabeel,
No, the S40 gearboxes were all pretty solid, both manual and automatic. If an S40 is going to develop problems, it’s usually with the turbo on the 1.6 diesel engine, or with the central locking or ignition system. There is a bit of a disadvantage in terms of fuel economy with buying an auto S40, but it’s not a huge gap, depending on how you drive.
What's the fuel consumption of the Volvo V50 diesel?
What fuel consumption should I expect from a 2005 Volvo V50 2.0-litre diesel?
Mike Hawkins (Ballyhaunis)Expert answer
Hi Mike,
The official figure for this car on the combined cycle is 5.7 litres/100km (49.6mpg). We'd expect most drivers to get close to 40mpg so long as all their driving isn't in town.
Hope that's of use
How can a 1.6-litre diesel engine manage a car like the Mondeo?
I wish to get the 1.6-litre diesel engine explained to me. The Ford Focus has a 1.6d and now the Mondeo has a 1.6d engine. Can both do a good job? One is small car, one is large and heavy. Is 1.6d a good engine generally?
Fergal Reidy (Celbridge)Feb 2013 Filed under: diesel
Expert answer
Hi Fergal,
This engine downsizing is prevalent and not just by Ford, and it has been made possible thanks to advances in engine technology, such as high pressure fuel injection and turbocharging.
A close look at what's offered by Ford Ireland reveals that the Mondeo 1.6 TDCi is the 115hp version, where as the Focus can be had with that and a cheaper 95hp unit. The raw data reveals that the 115hp Focus does the 0-100km/h sprint in 10.9 seconds - a second faster than the Mondeo with the same engine. Likewise, the Focus is more efficient with lower emissions and fuel consumption - though the differences are not as big as you might think.
Essentially, it boils down to the engine's torque output. This engine produces 270Nm from as low as 1,750rpm, which is more than enough to deal with a car the size of the Mondeo. Naturally a 2.0-litre diesel with the same technology will be more impressive again, but the 1.6 is just fine.
For the record, we find that Ford's 1.6-litre TDCi engine has a very narrow power band, but once you learn to keep the engine within that it never feels slow. Obviously, driven like that it won't come close to its official fuel economy figures.
Hope that all helps.
