Which new small car would suit me best?
I am trying to decide what small car is best for me to buy. I currently own a 2007 Nissan Micra and I like the look of the new model. It has more rear passenger room and boot space as well as Bluetooth. I have also read a review stating that the Hyundai i10 is better overall. I think the i10 is bit small space wise and think the i20 would be better. However I heard Hyundais are not reliable. I disliked driving the new Opel Corsa. The Volkswagen Golf/Polo and Toyota Auris are also too expensive for me.
What do you recommend?

Hi Jacqueline,
There are a lot of questions there. Let's go through them. The Hyundai i10 is indeed better than the new Nissan Micra, but the latter comes with lots of equipment as standard and you will probably get the best price for your own Micra from a Nissan dealer. Hyundais are reliable - very reliable in fact. The i20 would definitely offer more space than the i10 though it costs €2,000 more.
I think you should try a Mazda2, which is a car we really rate here on CompleteCar.ie. Otherwise, the Hyundai i20 could make an ideal purchase.

What car should we buy under scrappage?
For a couple in their 60s trading under scrappage, which of the following would you recommend: Ford Focus Style, Peugeot 308 or Hyundai i30? We eliminated the VW Golf on the basis of price.

Out of the three cars here, by far the best value under scrappage is the Hyundai i30. You could have a petrol model for as little as €13,995. The diesel is €15,495, which is quite a bit more. If your annual mileage is small then you should perhaps save some money and buy the petrol model. I know everyone buys diesel cars these days but the petrol alternative will only cost you €52 more than the diesel each year to tax and if your mileage is low then you wouldn't see much of a saving on fuel in the diesel car anyway.
The Peugeot 308 is comfortable and good on fuel.
If you are planning on changing the new car quite soon, then the Focus will be worth the most money as a trade-in, but I think the Hyundai would be the best buy in this case for you.

Why the delays on the Kia Sportage?
Have you heard anything about why it is taking so long for the new Kia Sportage to reach Irish showrooms? Is it just right hand drive cars for Ireland and UK that are slow to arrive or is it all over Europe?

Yes I recently had a conversation with the guys from Kia Ireland about this. There simply aren't enough of them being made and they can't make them quick enough. It is a problem that Kia have with the Sportage and Hyundai have with the ix35. Apparently they are going to add a new run on a different plant and this will help relieve the backlog, but we are being told that the delays are 'significant' and obviously with such a demand for them in right hand drive markets, especially in the UK, this is making the situation worse.

The i30 is a vastly underrated car and having tested it on a number of occasions we would conclude that it is more than a match to more established rivals such as the Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf. According to Hyundai, "The 2.0 CRDi automatic features an all-new six-speed self-shifting transmission that is smaller and lighter than any other six-speed automatic offered anywhere in world.
As well as the obvious economy and emissions benefits, the system uses a uniquely-shaped torque converter to reduce its overall size, and features three planetary gears and four pinion differentials.
Although it offers smooth and precise gearshifts throughout the rev range in fully auto mode, the gearbox can also be used like a sequential six-speed manual. A gate-type shift pattern allows the driver to choose between fully automatic or clutchless manual ‘Sport’ modes, which offers even more driver involvement and a more rewarding driving experience beyond the city limits."

Hi John,
It was developed in-house by the Hyundai-Kia Group for fitment in a wide range of future vehicles. It is a six-speed unit. The driver can choose from two operating modes - fully automatic or ‘Sport’. For city driving, fully automatic mode is ideal, while ‘Sport’ mode allows for clutch-less manual gear changes for greater driver involvement - either using the centre console selector lever or the new steering wheel-mounted ‘paddles’ (standard on all automatic models).
The paddles enable the driver to change gear without taking his/her hands off the steering wheel. Pulling the right-hand paddle towards the driver changes ‘up’, while pulling the left-hand paddle changes ‘down’.
Although the six-speed transmission is a regular ‘torque converter’ automatic, it incorporates a unique ‘flat’ torque converter, with three planetary gear sets and four pinion differentials - ensuring, according to Hyundai, ultra-fast, smooth and precise gearshifts throughout the engine speed range - and it weighs just 78kg - 20 kg more than the manual gearbox.
Its layout makes this transmission the most compact six-speed unit currently available anywhere in the world according to Hyundai. It is 54 mm shorter and weighs 12kg less than a regular five-speed unit and boosts fuel economy by up to 12 per cent. Like the i40’s six-speed manual, the automatic is a ‘filled for life’ maintenance-free unit.
Automatic transmission-equipped i40s will feature cruise control and Hyundai’s ‘Active Eco System‘ economy indicator to assist with fuel-efficient driving.

Are there any Band B 4x4s?
Are there any 4x4 diesels that fall into Band B for tax, and if not, what diesel 4x4s have the lowest tax rate?

Hi Steve,
From what we can tell, no there isn't any SUV with 4x4 in Band B, as yet. There are lots of SUVs and crossovers in Band B with front-wheel drive. You'll find the likes of the Skoda Yeti, VW Tiguan, Nissan Qashqai all have versions with frugal diesel engines.
When it comes to 4x4, the best you can probably do at the moment is Band C. The Skoda Yeti 4x4 sits in Band C, as does the new BMW X3, which is selling well with good reason.
The Lexus RX Hybrid sits in Band C, as do the Hyundai ix35 2.0 CRDi 4wd and the Volvo XC60 AWD.

Mitsubishi Colt or Toyota Yaris?
Just looking for advice on which is the best small automatic car. My wife is looking at a Mitsubishi Colt versus a Toyota Yaris. I've heard some bad reports on the Yaris automatic and I am wondering if these are unfounded. She currently has a Nissan Micra 1.2 Auto.

Is this a new or used car you would be buying? A new Toyota Yaris comes with the MultiMode transmission and a 1.3-litre VVTi petrol engine, which will cost you €18,285.
A Mitsubishi Colt automatic with a 1.3-litre engine will cost you €15,450 and that is quite a bit less.
A Ford Fiesta 1.4 Style Auto would come in at €18,735 and this would be a really nice car.
The best bet for us would be a Hyundai i20 1.4 Deluxe Auto, which comes in at €16,995 and that is a super little car. If it is a straight choice between the Yaris and Colt I think I'd save the €2,835 and have the Colt.
Come back to us if you're buying second-hand, as the story may be a different one.
What seven-seat four-wheel drive options are there?
My wife is looking for a seven-seat four-wheel drive, but not a BMW X5 or Jeep type car. Are there any other options?

I am a little unsure of what you mean. Do you want a seven-seat car that has four-wheel drive but one that isn't an SUV?
There aren't all that many four-wheel drive seven-seaters around. Obviously the BMW X5, which you mentioned, the Volvo XC90, the Land Rover Discovery, the Hyundai Santa Fe, Audi Q7, Mitsubishi Outlander, Kia Sorento, Chevrolet Captiva, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota LandCruiser.
A four-wheel drive seven-seat car is something that is harder to come by. The Mercedes-Benz R-Class seats seven and can be had with four-wheel drive.
Let us know if that's the sort of thing you're looking for.
How do I cope with the slippy conditions in my two-wheel drive SUV?
Can you recommend any budget all-wheel drive SUV or estate car? I tow a caravan for a couple of weeks over the summer and live on a road that occassionally floods so four-wheel drive could be useful. I have a Hyundai Sante Fe with two-wheel drive at moment and it is particularly poor in snow or slippy conditions. Would you have any recommendations?

We'd be only too happy to help you choose a new car if that's the route you want to go down, but one suggestion we'd have that could save you the cost of changing cars is to change the tyres on your Santa Fe to winter tyres.
Many people think that winter tyres are only of use in snow and ice, but that's far from the case. Regular tyres begin to go hard (and hence lose grip) at just seven degrees Celsius. That's regardless of how wet or dry the road surface is. Winter tyres, however, do not go hard at these temperatures and hence retain much higher levels of grip.
It's often said that a two-wheel drive car on winter tyres is better in slippery conditions than a four-wheel drive car on regular tyres.
I have first-hand experience of using winter tyres over the past week and I can confirm that they really make a huge difference. Bear in mind that they help with braking and turning, as well as traction.
You may have heard people say that winter tyres wear out quicker, but actually that's not the case at this time of year. When the temperatures are low, regular tyres wear quicker than winter tyres.
Admittedly, winter tyres wear quicker and their braking performance isn't as impressive as a regular tyre's in warm weather.
There's no doubt that winter tyres are more expensive to buy, but it'd be cheaper than changing your car.
